Vanderbilt Commodores, 64 at Kentucky Wildcats (1) 73: Post-game Celebration Thread

Vandy played a very good game, but the Wildcats were just too much, particularly Anthony Davis.

I'll have a full postmortem up in a little while, I want to take a few minutes to savor this sweet, sweet victory.

In the meantime, please treat this as an open thread to talk about all things Wildcat, the Vandy game, and whatever else is applicable, at least tangentially, to college basketball.

I'm having me a nice tot of Four Roses Single Barrel to celebrate the victory, and encourage everyone to enjoy whatever beverage, adult or otherwise, you celebrate with.

Go, 'Cats!

Congrats to UK

Davis is a beast. Elite talent at pretty much every single facet of the game. Hope we get another shot at y’all in the SEC or NCAA tourney.

How’s about missing some dadgum midrange floaters?!

Heckva game folks

You guys came out fighting and never stopped, you just happened to see AD at his best today.

Thanks Anchor

What a game for both teams… I hope we meet in final of sec tourney.

Great game, guys.

Very good, hard-fought game. First-class effort.

Much appreciated, KJ.

But if it’s all the same to you, I’d just as soon not see you guys again. You forced us to fight for our lives twice in the last two weeks. Go be damned impressive against somebody else. : ) And do some serious damage in the Big Dance.

I agree with Wheatgerm

Go be impressive somewhere else! I don’t want to see you again till New Orleans.

same here.

if I never see John Jenkins again it will be entirely too soon.

I don’t want to see them then! Dangle a big chunk of meat in front of an alligator, and he’s gonna CHOMP it. No thanks.

Hats off to Vandy as well .... Commodores will definitely be a tough out in both tournaments

Looks like it may only be in the SEC championship game as the overall #2 and #3 teams are in the opposite bracket ….see below … but it would be an honor to face your team they are very good.

I was just over at Anchor of Gold

Reading some of their thoughts as the game progressed. It’s always good to review an open game thread from the other perspective to see how different the plays you just watched were in their eyes. Still, there was a little mini thread just after AD hit that jumper as the shot clock died that caught my eye. Even the folks rooting aginst us take the time to marvel at how special of a player we have. I’ve sure enjoyed watching him in blue.

It’s unfair how good Davis is.

Yup
That was a nice shot.
………
Thank God
we will only see him for one year. I don’t care who they recruit. Davis is special.

by sweasyf on Feb 25, 2012 2:37 PM EST reply actions

OK that's 51 in a row at home

Is that the 2nd longest streak in UK history? Anybody know?

by BCinVA on Feb 25, 2012 2:40 PM EST reply actions

129 games.

Well, perhaps “between losses” should be the qualifier. :-)

I like Vandy's team.

They can go far in March… They have very good balance and Ezeli played a hell of a game today. He may have lost the battle to Davis but he sure gave him a fight.

Davis was unbelievable… Wow… His offense matched his d today. He mid range game has improved to the point that he is definitely the best player in the nation. He may be MVP candidate in four of five years….

by big-cuz fan on Feb 25, 2012 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

I like Vandy's team too....which is why I really don't want to face them again!

They play a very physical and fast game. John Jenkins is a real talent. I know I sound like a Vandy fan here, but I’ve been really impressed these 2 games.

That said, Davis today was UNBELIEVABLE. The POY contest is going to be very interesting after today. Assuming Robinson has a decent performance tonight vs. Mizzou, not sure how the final contest won’t be a serious knock down Cat fight between Davis and Robinson.

These tough games against Vandy are great for both teams ... makes them both better for the post season ...

In the big dance, I always like to see the SEC do well …. it’s hard for me to believe that the Big East will get 8 or more teams in the NCAA’s …

We have shown all kinds of versatility this year … hard to believe we won today and only made two 3’s … Davis plays more like a senior than a freshman, He’s got to be POY – hands down

by ukcris on Feb 25, 2012 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

No wonder. Cal has to run him out of practice. That is determination.

by bigboyblue on Feb 25, 2012 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

At the 3:22 mark UK was up 66-65....and they close the game out the right way offensively

Here are the last 9 possessions from that point on:
-Davis made FG
-Teague 1-2 ft’s
-Jones 2 made Ft’s
-Miller made FG
-Davis made FG
-Jones Dunk
-Teague 2 made ft’s
-Davis 2 made ft’s
-Teague 2 made ft’s

They scored on every possession. That is how you close out a tight game. Just great offensive execution!

Out of curio, anyone else watching the KU-Mizzou action in less than an hour?

I’m probably going to sit there and bemoan the fact KU is willing to walk away from this series. Some things you just don’t do….killing a rivalry like that out of petty spite is one of them.

Same for me. I followed the link that Big Sky left in the game thread and it took me Vandy’s site where it shows there. Very weird indeed!

MKG
During post game interviews, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist told reporters: "I’m graduating here. I’m not going nowhere. I’m staying at Kentucky," followed by "I’m dead serious. I don’t know why y’all laughing."

I think we'll have a bunch of talent regardless

What MKG brings is a MOTOR. I haven’t seen a kid with his combination of talent and drive ever. Add the extra experience to what he already has….wow.

Although on the other hand, if he moves as high on the draft boards as some suspect. Cal may do another of those I’ll “tear up your scholarship papers” acts on him. That is a ton of money to pass on. Lots of time yet before this is more than something said at a presser.

by sweasyf on Feb 25, 2012 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

He's sick as a defender.

And has a very good offensive game. Uses both hands.

I know I harp on the “both hands” thing, but those of you who haven’t played a lot of basketball must understand what an incredible advantage the ability to use the off-hand is. It is the difference between a first-round and second-round draft pick, at minimum.

As old and slow as I am, and I am 54, I have taken kids half my age off the dribble because they cannot guard the left hand. In college, it was a devastating weapon that was nearly indefensible. It’s value simply cannot be understated.

John Wall was freakishly athletic, but it was his incredible left hand that made him a phenomenon. He could literally finish any play with his left hand, and would actually dunk as well with his left as with his right.

Oh, by the way — did you notice how hard AD is working on that lefty hook? Yeah, he made one today, and it looked awesome. Ezeli had about as much chance of blocking that, as a right-hand dominant player, as I do at 5’10".

/ end rant. :-)

If memory serves...

You put up a post a long time ago about JW working on his off hand. My chances of finding that are probably ’bout zero, but I do remember reading it.

And you’re a 100% right, ask OC about the off hand… :-)

It’s now officially true. I hope he does what’s right for him, whatever it is, but I love this kid.

Me too Glenn. When it comes to losing a player early to the NBA, I’m insanely selfish. However I have learned that what they can earn in the pros is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Michael all I will say is whatever you decide is all right.

Two years ago I would never have said this.

I am watching Ole Miss and LSU...

… where Trent Johnson was run by Tony Green with 7 minutes left.

This young LSU assistant is totally impressing me with his effort and coaching in a lost cause. That kid needs a head coaching job somewhere. Love his energy, positivity and engagement.

I just got off the treadmill

Once I get done playing hamster, I hear MKG said he’s going to stay at UK. I wonder if I do a few more miles if AD will echo that?

Glenn - if you are reading

I still don’t see this post on the main page. From ASoB, the only link I see is from the 2nd half open thread, although I did see your note on Twitter. SBN is acting real weird lately.
