How well I remember “Big Jim” Andrews. IMO one of the great Kentucky centers. He was deadly from 10 feet in on either baseline.
Six feet eleven inches of pure basketball. I loved that guy.

Great player and one of the nicest guys around

He’s a real attribute to the UK bb family (as I’m sure you already know).

Look At His 1972 And 1973 Stats

Pretty impressive numbers. Better than Tom Payne in 1971. Twice 1st team All-SEC.

He and classmate Steve Penhorwood were a rarity in UK basketball recruiting. Almost never did UK sign 2 players from the same HS in the same year.

Andrews and Penhorwood in 1969. Benny Spears and Clint Wheeler in 1966. Mike Casey and Bill Busey also in 1966.

Andrews was an All-America in every sense of the word,

and it’s a terrible oversight for him to have been honored as such.

Joe Hall's Recruiting Plans

He tried to sign Tom McMillen (# 1 player in USA) In 1970 so UK frontline would be C Tom Payne, PF Jim Andrews, and WF McMillen.

Funny story

Hall was in Ohio looking at another player. He stopped to get gas and asked the guy behind the counter if they had any good ball players in the area. The guy said, yeah, we’ve got a big guy averaging about 35 points a game just down the road. Hall was like, really, where is he? The guy told him where to find Andrews and the rest is history.
