#5 UK Hoops 82- Ole Miss 41 Postmortem

We have all heard of the term "trap game" . Sandwich a somewhat lesser opponent between two really good opponents and you have to be careful to avoid the letdown in the game between. Don't let your players take any opponent lightly, and don't stop doing what got you where you are.

So when Coach Matthew Mitchell looked at the schedule for this month, he had to see the game against Ole Miss as a trap game. Fortunately for him, the Hoops squad doesn't believe in underestimating anyone. Of course they won't play different for anyone either. The end result was an 82-41 shellacking of the Ole Miss Lady Rebels at Memorial tonight.

More after the jump...

UK Hoops matched the 1982-83 squad with a 21-2 mark to start this season, and they are now 10-0 in SEC play. And if you think that those ladies don't know what is going on, just ask them. Bria Goss has no intention of allowing anything to get in the way of an SEC Championship for this team. "We're not going to let up. This is the time we need to push harder," Goss said. "We don't want this opportunity to slip away. We're just going to continue to focus on Kentucky."

Kentucky forced Mississippi (12-11, 2-8) into 36 turnovers. And although A'dia Mathies had an off night, she went 2 of 14 from the field and finished with 11 points. Kastine Evans scored 12 points and had a career-high seven steals.

The game was not without it's moments however, as the Hoops squad struggled and didn't make a basket for over six and a half minutes in the first half, after jumping out to a 7-2 lead on Ole Miss. They finally regained the lead for good at 18-16 and never looked back.

If UK captures its second conference title in school history, they will likely have to win the next three games. They hit the road for games at LSU on Sunday, at No. 8 Tennessee on Feb. 13 and at Alabama on Feb. 16.

Coach Mitchell stated concerning the game, "I just think when you have an effort like tonight and you play Kentucky basketball, that's the most encouraging thing."

After the Tennessee Lady Volunteers got handed a loss at South Carolina tonight, The 2 game cushion would seem like an accomplishment to other teams, but not Kentucky. They forced Ole Miss into 36 turnovers, the most for an SEC game this season. I don't know what Matthew Mitchell is doing, and frankly I don't care. The results are nothing less than phenomenal, and this team has served notice that this year's Women's Basketball Championship is going through Lexington. Guess Coach Cal is going to have to up the ante a little bit when he isn't the only game in town.
