#5 UK Hoops 82- Ole Miss 41 Postmortem

We have all heard of the term "trap game" . Sandwich a somewhat lesser opponent between two really good opponents and you have to be careful to avoid the letdown in the game between. Don't let your players take any opponent lightly, and don't stop doing what got you where you are.

So when Coach Matthew Mitchell looked at the schedule for this month, he had to see the game against Ole Miss as a trap game. Fortunately for him, the Hoops squad doesn't believe in underestimating anyone. Of course they won't play different for anyone either. The end result was an 82-41 shellacking of the Ole Miss Lady Rebels at Memorial tonight.

More after the jump...

Star-divide

UK Hoops matched the 1982-83 squad with a 21-2 mark to start this season, and they are now 10-0 in SEC play. And if you think that those ladies don't know what is going on, just ask them. Bria Goss has no intention of allowing anything to get in the way of an SEC Championship for this team. "We're not going to let up. This is the time we need to push harder," Goss said. "We don't want this opportunity to slip away. We're just going to continue to focus on Kentucky."

Kentucky forced Mississippi (12-11, 2-8) into 36 turnovers. And although A'dia Mathies had an off night, she went 2 of 14 from the field and finished with 11 points. Kastine Evans scored 12 points and had a career-high seven steals.

The game was not without it's moments however, as the Hoops squad struggled and didn't make a basket for over six and a half minutes in the first half, after jumping out to a 7-2 lead on Ole Miss. They finally regained the lead for good at 18-16 and never looked back.

If UK captures its second conference title in school history, they will likely have to win the next three games. They hit the road for games at LSU on Sunday, at No. 8 Tennessee on Feb. 13 and at Alabama on Feb. 16.

Coach Mitchell stated concerning the game, "I just think when you have an effort like tonight and you play Kentucky basketball, that's the most encouraging thing."

After the Tennessee Lady Volunteers got handed a loss at South Carolina tonight, The 2 game cushion would seem like an accomplishment to other teams, but not Kentucky. They forced Ole Miss into 36 turnovers, the most for an SEC game this season. I don't know what Matthew Mitchell is doing, and frankly I don't care. The results are nothing less than phenomenal, and this team has served notice that this year's Women's Basketball Championship is going through Lexington. Guess Coach Cal is going to have to up the ante a little bit when he isn't the only game in town.

it's refreshing to hear of athletes

not letting up when they could coast.

to be honest with you I am hoping that the men’s and women’s squads are supporting each other because they are BOTH KICKING ASS! Maybe they are also competing with one each other to see who can win the most games! ;j

i’m tempted to send each coach a victory cigar once the season is over irregardless of the outcome because this has been a fantastic ride for a hoops lover and a fan of UK.

This team might wind up with a record very similar to the men.

This is just so great. I have waited a long time to see UK Hoops get good, and it is finally actually happening.

How frustrating was it to have Tennessee dominate us every year in women’s basketball. I think those days are over, and having said that, may Pat Summitt coach the Vols for 100 more years, God bless her.

Congrats to the ladies

for getting past their trap game. Here’s hoping the men’s team takes a lesson from their effort when they travel to South Carolina.

It was a trap game alright

But not for the Cats. Any team coming into Memorial to play the ladies are automatically falling into a trap that is almost impossible to get out of. I love watching them play and wish they had a pregame show.

I think anyone coming to Memorial, or even with the Hoops squad coming to them, has a complete and full grasp of the term:

duck and cover……

If no one believed in them so far, this game ought to wake them up.

Great win!

The women have to be in the running for a #1 seed in the tournament right? That would be awesome if both the men and women did that.

They are there JL, but it will be tough to move out the 4 in front of them

Baylor, ND, UCONN and Stanford they have been there all season, and don’t see anybody in their way.

You're Welcome.....as I said before, this is fun to do......

I am hoping that next year we will have just about every game on TV. They are only at about 60% right now. Memorial is selling out, so I am hoping that next year at least every home game is televised.

Here is the thing about Hoops. Tickets are $7. Almost any ticket in the Coliseum can be had for $7. If people are within driving distance of the Coliseum and they are not going, they are crazy. There is not a bad seat in the entire gym, and the atmosphere is electric. It might not be Rupp Arena, but you get a bunch of old wooden bleachers rocking and it gets loud.

Bursting with PRIDE

Some friends of the family played for the Lady Kats, including Belitta Croley, Leslie Nichols, Stasha Alicus and others. They must be as proud as I am of what this program has achieved in the past three or four years. I’ve kept an eye on the women’s team since the days of Valerie Still and Tanya Fogle, and the program has come quite aways to a place that deserves the attention it is getting.

Awesome job for both BBall coaches to have UK in the top 5 nationally, but for the ladies, keep rising to the top. We are 100% C.A.T.S Fans, and love what Coach Mitchell is accomplishing for Wildcat Nation.

Go Big Blue!!!!
