47 Cats Make SEC Honor Roll // Lexington, Kentucky

A total of 47 University of Kentucky student-athletes were named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll for fall sports, the league office announced. Kentucky had the fourth-most honorees out of all 12 SEC schools.

Very good to see.

Scathing memo urges referees to enforce sportsmanship rules - Seth Davis - SI.com

In his memo, [NCAA national coordinator of officials John] Adams specifically urged referees to enforce rules against taunting, profanity, and gestures like "waving off" an official after a call. He also reminded them that coaches should be immediately penalized if they leave the coach's box to complain about a call. "These types of actions call for technical fouls. Call them!" Adams wrote. "Your coordinators and commissioners will support you."

Hat tip: KSR. KSR wonders if this means a sudden increase in technical fouls, and I'd say it very well could. I hope coaches have taken appropriate note, and advised their charges accordingly. Also, Calipari might want to rethink his language during games.

Tom's Take: Goose Givens on the Wildcats

"They win the right way."

And what Jack "Goose" Givens meant was how this Kentucky basketball team wins first with its defense. On today's "Leach Report" radio show, Givens said that's how it was for the 1978 national title team which he helped lead.

Regarding the emphasis on technicals for unsportsmanlike conduct,

John Adams said

“I don’t mean it to be a threat, but this is an integral part of officiating. It’s just as important as getting block/charge calls right,” he said.
Well, they certainly struggle to get the block/charges right, and I fear they will be just as inept for the technicals.

So now, in addition to the somewhat "dubious" at best calling of the "blarge"....

The coaches need to worry about what they say and how they say it to the refs, (which should have been a point of emphasis all along I guess), and be on the lookout for referees trying to impress their bosses?

No one wants to see a new generation of Bob Knight’s out there. And I myself have moments, even on here, where in the heat of what is going on in a game, that I say something that later either sounds completely different from what I intended, or somewhat harsh in the clear light of day. But where is the balance? How is a coach supposed to know what he can say to one ref, or to another in an attempt to get his point across? I mean, are certain 4-letter words allowed? Or do we have a Bull Durham situation here where you can say about anything as long as you dont question the sexual orientation of the refs?

I don’t want another Cincinnati-Xavier, but I don’t want robots out there shooting and running.

I've seen two dubious techs in the early games

One in the Nova/Marquette game and one in the KU/Iowa State game (which, incidentally, has been quite entertaining so far)

Talking about ISU's transfers

Fran Frascilla said Coach Cal would get killed if he took in 5 transfers with troubled pasts like ISU has, but Fred Hoiberg gets a pass because everyone likes him so much. It was an interesting recognition of the fact that Cal gets extra scrutiny.

If the NCAA National Coordinator of Officials

does not have the authority to sanction officials, exactly what authority does he have other than recommending officials for the tournament?

by jdogblue on Jan 28, 2012 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

I say that it's about time

and long overdue.

I have a very dim view of trash talking and taunting. There was a time when sportsmanship actually meant something, and it certainly didn’t include the behavior that we see today.

There is absolutely no reason for a player to ever, and I mean ever, talk to an official (except perhaps saying something like “yes, sir”). When I was a youngster, if I had ever complained to a referee or umpire about a call, my coach would have corrected my behavior immediately. And making a dismissive gesture to an official falls in the same category.

I remember, fondly, when a player was whistled for a foul that he, by rule, had to raise his hand to ease the scorekeeper’s task. That era is long, long gone.

by jeffy on Jan 28, 2012 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you.

It was never okay to bark at an official when I was young. In fact, I never saw it happen where a technical wasn’t called, and it was incredibly rare — understandably. If you talked back to an official, you’d get a technical. It was automatic.

This is a direct hand-me-down from the NBA. I can see this as a good thing, and a bad one if it becomes a technical for every expression of emotion.

"direct hand-me-down"

Refers to yapping at the refs. That isn’t really clear in my comment.

Also, I don't think the number of technicals will increase

At least not in the long run, and not if there is a uniform crackdown.

Players, and coaches, will learn quickly to behave.

Probably.

I agree with you about talking to refs

but I don’t like it when players get T’d up for reacting to a call. They are still humans and I don’t mind them being generally expressive after a call. Players should only talk to the refs during breaks in the action and only then to get an explanation for why a foul was called. Basketball varies so wildly in how its called that I think players are entitled to explanations from the refs.

The whole debate started when the Okie State player was ejected for taunting after a dunk. I’ve never had a problem with flexing and whatnot after a dunk or a block if it’s a particularly great play. When you’ve just done something amazing like the OK St dunk, I think you should be allowed to enjoy it. When I grew up, the Dikembe Mutombo finger wag was pretty much the coolest thing in the world. In pretty much every game of basketball I played in elementary school, you’d get the finger wag if your shot was blocked. At the college level, I’d like it if they only preened after doing something really cool.

I still play pickup occasionally at UK. To use the current parlance of bball, if you get owned you don’t get to complain about anything.

Tons of football players on the honor roll

That’s great to see. They are not just backups as well. Morgan Newton, Matt Smith and other players with significant PT are on the list as well. WR/OF Brian Adams deserves special recognition for making the list while playing both football and baseball.

I don't think Eric Bledsoe was sent down ...

to D-league. This was just a two-game stint for rehab.

by ukcats81 on Jan 28, 2012 2:55 PM EST reply actions

It's injury rehab for sure

Just like in baseball, he’s getting into shape in the minors. I promise that the Clippers do not prefer Courtney Fortson to Bledsoe. I speak as one of the few Clippers fans in Kentucky (honestly maybe the only. I haven’t met another here).

Language

Interesting Post…
Is Coach’s language bad during the game? I remember the TJ mofo moment, but normally is it bad and is it directed at players, refs or both?
I agree that posturing and so forth should be stopped and I say that as someone that in high school had several technicals because of language and gestures. I was a very bad tempered kid early on. I got better once I could drive and started playing around on courts around town. Grown men don’t take that stuff and can deal out serious punishment.

I believe I know how to improve officiating and will finally write about it next week. I have been meaning to for some time. Everyone will hate it, but it is an innovation.

Reports from several people who have sat close to the bench ...

… say Coach Cal’s language is pretty salty. Of course, that’s a subjective viewpoint that can vary from person to person.

Abuse Of Power

As well intentioned and designed as it is one can be reasonably sure that the edict from on high will be abused in its implementation. You need only look at the absurd and capricious ways that the rule on excessive celebration is administered. It is just the type of judgement that has come to be expected from a cabal of academics who are, practically by definition, disassociated from fans, players, and the population in general. As the man who helped bring down Boss Tweed asserted:

"Power is what men seek and any group that gets it will abuse it."

In the end the game will be less appealing.

Thomas Robinson gets the star treatment from Big 12 officials

Benefit of the doubt on most calls. In a bit of a surprise for me, Royce White looks better than T-Rob. I think T-Rob has trouble guarding strong face up 4s because he also had trouble with TJ. That can’t be great news for his draft stock.

Idiot Adams

If John Adams wishes to tighten the reins on the actions of coaches and players, he needs to take a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong look in the mirror, as difficult as that might be for him considering he’s completely incompetent, and recruit/train officials who will actually perform their duties above the middle school level.

Every weekend, and nearly every week night, there are calls/no calls which put players in danger and cost teams victories. It’s inexcusable, and it isn’t getting better, it’s getting worse.
