Beyond The Hype: Analyzing Top 10 Recruits from 2007-11 :: NextCats
Ben Roberts at NextCats put together a fantastic analysis of top 10 freshmen from the past few years. He contrasts Kentucky's recent freshmen to other similarly touted prospects. For example, here's some fun facts about Marquis Teague:
Though he’s been criticized for his play so far this season, Marquis Teague actually ranks behind only Wall and Derrick Rose in assists per game among the players on this list. His assist-to-turnover ratio (1.4) also trails Rose (1.8) and Wall (1.6), but it’s better than both Brandon Knight (1.3) and Tyreke Evans (1.1). Through his first 19 games, Teague’s numbers (85 assists, 60 turnovers) are almost identical to Rose’s (84 assists, 57 turnovers) over the same span. Among the top five point guards in the class of 2011, only Texas’ Myck Kabongo (2.0) has a better assist-to-turnover ratio than Teague. Kabongo (5.5) and Michigan’s Trey Burke (4.8) are the only freshmen from major conferences averaging more assists per game than Teague.

I wonder why it seemed like Knight was so good at taking care of the ball???

If Teague scored as well as Knight every game we would tend to overlook the TO's - we did with Knight
A man is nothing more than a summation of his scars!
That may very well be it.....
of course the ratio doesnt tell us how many TO’s a player had, just how many he had in reference to assists.
It could very well be that Knight didn’t average many assists or TO’s.

For the season, Knight
had 159 assists (4.18 per game) versus 120 turnovers (3.16 per game).
Through 19 games, Teague has 85 assists (4.47 per game) versus 60 turnovers (3.16 per game).
I’d say they are fairly close.
thanks Jdog.....I hadn't gone and looked at it

Teague
I am very happy with his progress. And I also can remember people this time last year unhappy with the progress of Knight (I was probably one of them). Many felt he was a scorer but not a true pg. But people soon got over that. A FF run does that to us all.
WOW!
Who wudda thunk it? It does seem like he’s really struggling, tho.

This is a great article
Cal’s ability to coach young PGs really is remarkable. Also Terrence would’ve have been 6th on rebounding list if he’d been a top ten recruit (joining Ant and Boogie). Our freshmen the last 3 years have really performed at an extraordinary level regardless of position.
Looking at the data for other teams, you can see how so many sportswriters doubt the ability of superstar freshmen to lead their teams to a title. What they are missing is that UK’s guys perform at a much higher level than normal. Maybe it’s impossible for anyone other than Cal, but it’s possible for Cal.
I think this is a telling quote:
“… one thing is clear: As long as a Top 10 recruit stays relatively healthy, he’s sure to eventually make it to the NBA.”
This article has obviously changed a few minds about Teague’s performance to date, but he is still not listed on any of the major 2012 Mock Drafts. There is plenty of season left for that to change but, even if he isn’t a one-n-done player, he is still destined for the NBA long before the possiblity of graduation.
