I think I am with you Kansas......

paying someone to relive one of my most terrible nightmares seems a little too much like therapy, which I have carefully and successfully avoided for my entire adult life!!!

I am now and shall forever be the Cat in The Hat, The Artist Formerly Known As ABC!!!

Coincidentally, I was in Kansas at the time

I was stationed in Germany (Army) but had been sent to Fort Leavenworth for 9 weeks Feb – Apr of 92 to attend a school.

On top of the game being draining for me, I had about 6 guys patiently waiting for me (obviously not hoop fans) to head down to Kansas City. I. Would. Not. Leave. before the game was over. Well, when Sean Woods made that amazing shot over Laettner, I turned off the TV (relax, it was a timeout) and I knew that one of my friends was also from KY and would have it on in his room. So I headed down that way to watch those last few triumphal moments. Of course, I was talking all kinds of shit! You know the rest. I did finally go out with the guys, but I was in such a funk, it was nearly impossible to have any fun. It one brief moment, it changed from a celebratory night out to a drown my sorrows in beer night (thank God for Boulavard beer).

I'm halfway through it now.

Normally, I can finish books like this in about four hours, but I have been taking little nibbles of this one.

Don't think I'll read it

I still have a VHS tape of that game, that I periodically pull out and watch. If I need to remember, I’ll just watch it. The whole game, especially the 4th Q and the OT are the most riveting and special basketball you will ever see. Each team just kept going out there and doing it. Whatever “it” was at the moment that needed doing.

Of course, after Sean Woods makes that driving shot and there’s just over 2 seconds left. I turn off the tape. Most of that tape is getting worn and skips a lot, its been a couple of years since I’ve seen it – it might not even play anymore. But I bet that last pass and shot is pretty pristine because that piece of tape has almost never passed over the playback heads.

It's a very good book.

Full of insights that you can’t get from the game. Most of the book is backstory, and a lot of it is absolutely fascinating.

Great book

I finished it a few weeks ago and was blown away. The title, though, is a bit misleading, because the book chronicles the two teams through the three years leading up to the Elite 8 contest, not just The Game, as the title suggests.

Wojciechowski has agreed to come on Wildcat Wednesday for an interview, and when he does, I’m going to write my “review” of the book.

With that being said, I highly recommend the book to any UK fan. You’ll learn some things that went on which most fans have no idea happened during RP’s first three years. It’s about as “inside” as an author can be with a book, without living with those he’s writing about. The fact that everyone, even Eddie Sutton and The Game officials, were interviewed by the author makes the book so very interesting.

I picked it up at a bookstore....

on Monday but had to put it back on the shelf. It hurts bad enough to see that shot replayed before just about every college basketball game. I watched that game at my sisters house with about 10 other people. As the game got close to the finish we were all in the floor in front of the tube. When that infamous shot was made I layed there in shocked disbelief for close to a hour. I didn’t turn on the tv the next day or read any newspapers. I was grief stricken for days.

I was as well.

But that was 20 years ago, and I have long since come to terms with it.
