Kentucky Basketball Recruiting: Coach Cal and Coach K in the Thick of Things at Hoophall Classic

The Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts is an annual destination for many of the nation's top coaches. Why? Big time recruits, of course.
Today, John Calipari and Mike Krzyzewski were among the headliners to appear at Hoophall, keeping an eye on some of the kids they are trying to woo to their respective schools:
Among the attendees for Monday's opener between St. Anthony (NJ) and Miller Grove (GA) were University of Kentucky coach John Calipari and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski.
With his deep Western Massachusetts connections, Calipari has been a regular at the Hoophall Classic over the years, but his presence still sends a buzz around the room. On Monday that buzz was amplified by the sight of Coach K just a few feet away.
Cal is eyeing 6'9" big forward Tony Parker from Miller Grove in Georgia, as well as hanging around to see the nation's #1 recruit, wing forward/off guard Shabazz Muhammad of Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, play his game against legendary DaMatha Catholic.
MassLive also has a little video of 2013 combo forward Kuran Iverson (yes, he's related to Allen Iverson), a player that Kentucky has shown some interest in (and he is certainly interested in Kentucky, among others), but as far as I can tell, has not been offered by Coach Cal.

But he still needs direction and coaching and veterans to learn from.
And he is getting none of that in Washington. He is just not ready to turn himself into an All-Star right now. It is so sad that he is stuck on that team.

Muhammad Impresses Cal And K
#1 Shabazz Muhammad had his second impressive performance against top talent — first it was 42 against Julius Randle, now 37 versus ‘Cuse commit Jeremi Grant of Dematha. Calipari and Krzyzewski were only coaches of Muhammad’s final six to attend.

How many L's would it take to take them out of the NCAA tourney ... I think they are already looking at a less than favorable seed ...
I think he will leave before 2017or at least give UL a chance to pick his successor – by tipping his hand early (see below) he will really cripple UL’s recruiting in the next few years ….

I do wonder something, how much easier would our path to winning it all every year
be if we had some serious wide body forwards occasionally in the mix? One of the problems of playing freshmen so much is that they do not have time to develop physically the way they would if they were here two or three years. Watching the Tennessee game made me long for the days of a James Lee or even a Melvin Turpin who while also was nice and tall, was also pretty good sized down on the block when it came to standing his ground.
Anthony Davis is an amazing and unbelievable talent. But Jarnell Stokes showed us Saturday that having some beef to go with skill can literally change a team from an also-ran to a competitor. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldnt trade Davis for three Stokes’. But I would like to get some beef on the line. MKG 20 lbs heavier with muscle scares me, I mean really scares me.

Nazr was a REAL wide body when he first came to Lexington...
he was well over 300 and ended up losing like 80 pounds during his college career.

And your example to prove that point is the beefy man-child Jarnell Stokes, the 18-year-old who should still be in high school right now?
Not that I disagree with your premise. But it’s not as if Coach Cal isn’t recruiting those players—Stokes is a perfect example. And certainly Cousins had that beef even as a freshman.

Well, there are some exceptions, as Stokes showed so prominently.
But we didn’t get Stokes, Tennessee did. And Big Cuz was a prime example of both. I would like to see us try to put more emphasis on it I guess. Had a somewhat beefed-up Terrence Jones not been willing to take a beating and foul out on only two real fouls, Stokes would have beaten Davis to a pulp. One of the things that makes a guy like Davis so good, is that he is an enigma. He should not be able to handle the ball that way, he should not be so agile, he should not have such great footwork. But you cannot hide the lack of bulk. And the more we see teams playing that sagging zone that we have seen the last two games, the more we will begin to want a couple of “enforcers with skills”. MKG works hard, does all the right things, and if he had 20 more lbs would be unstoppable in the paint.

Davis vs Big Cuz
What makes Davis so unique is his abitlity to defend even with his slight frame. He can close on a guy quicker than anybody I have ever seen. I loved Big Cuz but I would take Davis over him any day of the week. Davis isn’t a head case either. As far as Mr. Stokes, he is a force without question and Jones didn’t respond to the challenge. He should be the “enforcer with skills” that you want .

Cal hasn’t successfully recruited any girth. I think he prefers the mobile, skilled big men. But yeah, I would love to see at least one guy tipping the scales over 250 every year. Just having a wall down low would help our team this year so much. Davis is getting better playing on-ball defense down low, but he’ll get overpowered by the elite widebodies. There aren’t a ton of those types of guys out there, but we’ll encounter them in March.
