Kentucky Wildcats (2) at Tennessee Volunteers: Open Game Thread
Kentucky Wildcats at Tennessee Volunteers, Jan 14, 2012 12:00 PM EST
This is the official open game thread for the Kentucky Wildcats at Tennessee Volunteers basketball game this afternoon. Game particulars are as follows, courtesy of UKAthletics.com:
Kentucky @ Tennessee

Kentucky at Tennessee Sat., Jan. 14 - 12:00 p.m. ET Knoxville, Tenn. Thompson-Boling Arena Game Notes: UK
Coverage
TV: ESPN Radio: UK IMG Live Video via ESPN3 Live Audio Text Updates
Tennessee was expected to be down this year due to the l'affaire du Pearl and the loss of some of their quality players like Scotty Hopson and Tobias Harris to the NBA, and Brian Williams, Melvin Goins and Josh Bone to graduation. But new head coach Cuonzo Martin has really hit the ground running, and the matriculation of Jarnell Stokes to the Vols after the semester break.
Be sure to visit our good buddies over at Rocky Top Talk, SB Nation's outstanding Tennessee blog, for the Vols take on the game. Be nice, these guys are our friends.
To win this game, the Wildcats must:
- Win the turnover battle. The Vols are especially sensitive to turnovers;
- Get to the line. Kentucky has been doing a better job of getting to the line lately, and their free throw percentage has been better. Right now, it is a team strength;
- Run the offense. Marquis Teague really looked confused a lot of the game against Auburn, and UK struggled to recognize the defense Auburn was in. Cuonzo Martin isn't known for zones, but if he does throw one at Kentucky, they must recognize it.
- Rebound defensively. UK has been struggling to get defensive rebounds, and they looked really bad in that area for most of the game versus Auburn;
- Keep Anthony Davis in the game;
- Get Terrence Jones involved early.
This is a dangerous game for Kentucky. When Calipari talks about this game being the "super bowl" for teams, it has never been more true than for the Tennessee Volunteers this year. Tennessee was expected to be really bad, but they are finding out that this team is capable, and it is gaining fan support, so this could well be a sellout at the biggest basketball arena in the SEC.
With that said, this is the Kentucky Wildcats, and they aren't #2 in the land for nothing.
Go, 'Cats!

Obviously going to be a great game.
Given that the Vols apparently actually did beat Mississippi State, since we’re riding on a 5 game winning steak and all.

Not panicking, just not working the offense.

Stokes apparently to the scorer's table for Tennessee.

We are also playing pretty dumb on offense though

Almost a 10-0 run to end the half ;-)
But, really, after Kentucky had that 8-0 run to go up 28-25, who saw 34-28 at the half? Both defenses playing great, but it feels like Tennessee is getting more “easy” points so far.

I think your sitting in your living room wearing orange and checking
your Jimmy Dykes fan club website as much as you are this time. Stokes isn’t the problem at all. Anyone can see that. Clearly our defense is playing well, we have no offense right now. Getting no calls, not hitting 3’s, and getting out rebounded is the difference. Not stokes.

by Stuck in Cincy on Jan 14, 2012 1:01 PM EST up reply actions
Put it this way:
The team is playing harder with “their boy” out there doing well. To the crowd, too, each of those baskets is a highlight reel dunk. Stokes’ contribution to the game has been a lot more than 6 points and 2 boards.

Agreed. Did we hit a 3 in the first half?
I don’t remember one. Against a team that is not good at guarding the 3.
Kentucky Basketball - The Reason for Living
Where is the motion off the ball? There is none.
Once AD was out, there seemed to be a bit more, but they were running a different set also, that rotates more.
That's what I was saying earlier.
IT’s like were not looking to get the ball anywhere. Pass the ball……..hold on to it for about 3 seconds…….pass the ball…….hold on to it for about three seconds……..dribble inside (one on one play) get stuck……….pass it back outside………hold onto it 3 seconds……dribble 3 steps……..pass to someone……..challenged shot……..
He was earlier made a MAN move for a bucket.
Then he and Stokes got into it, TJ kinda backed off after that. He didn’t need any more fouls.
He's still better than Len Elmore
But I sympathize

It will not take major change to win this game,

Making waves in a sea of blue.
yeah..
but they don’t need anything to fall in their “significant favor.” Their best scorers haven’t been scoring, we haven’t hit a 3, and we are a GREAT 3 shooting team. Clearly UT played its best this half and UK played about as bad offensively as they have all year. I think if UK plays at a decent level they come out and win this one.. But they have played poorly thus far. They’re too good to write them off the way you have been consistently

techinicals on Coach Cal
We love ya coach but how about a little discipline on your part. You chew out most of the players when they exit the floor, how about showing some restraint on your part….i.e., I am chewing you out. It takes the “wind out of the sails” for the players and the fans and looks pretty bad when the players and other coaches are having to “gently” get you off the floor so you don’t get another technical. Knock it off
Absolutely disagree.
When players see the coach stick up for them, it motivates.
Making waves in a sea of blue.
That technical was BS. Poor officiating, period. Beyond debate.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
he still got the technical
whether you like it or not and whether or not it was justified, we are not in charge of calling technicals, last time I watched the refs do that….no excuse for continually getting technicals….has nothing to do with right or wrong or what he did. THE OPPOSITION STILL GOT 2 SHOTS AND THE BALL OUT!!!! Cheap points and unnecessary in my book. I love the cats but the coaches should not be giving the opposition points!!!!
one more thing about technicals
this is not the FIRST time coach Cal has gotten technicals this year and so far I haven’t seen that the refs are “easing” up on him. So why not just give in to authority (again right or wrong) and accept the fact that perhaps he may be getting “unfairly” judged at times. Nevertheless, as we progress in the conference games are going to get harder and harder to win, we should not be giving our opponents easy points by the coaches. And so far I haven’t seen any evidence that the coach getting technicals has motivated the players…they are good on their own without the coach trying to motivate them by “sticking up for them” against the refs.
He had to make sure he was heard.
We were getting killed by one-sided officiating. You have make sure the point is driven home, it’s good coaching.
The technical was another bad call. It was undeserved, and the official had already decided that he was going to T him up for being right about that call. And he was right.
The officiating in this game was galactically abysmal. Period.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
How many? 2?
We don’t know what this one was about, but often we know he is arguing on behalf of his players and the phsical abuse they take. I think it’s OK for him to blow off a little steam when he thinks they’re unprotected.
by Big Blue Daddy on Jan 14, 2012 4:58 PM EST up reply actions
Neither one of his technicals
cost us a ball game and the one today may have helped the team hang in there.
Making waves in a sea of blue.
It didn't hurt.
It only cost us one point, and even two would have been worth it to make the point. After the T got called, he made sure to push it right to the limit to make sure his point was received.
