Kentucky fans have jumped ship on Joker Phillips in a hurry even though his record is better so far than his predecessor's was
My 1st fanpost so here it goes...
This came as somewhat of a suprise to me, guess its easy to forget how bad we were at one time, or is it? Im not entirely sure anymore. Joker has had 17 games at the helm of the UK football program. He is 8-9. Rich Brooks was 5-12 after 17 games as head coach of our program and look at what he was able to accomplish with nowhere near the skill as a recruiter as Joker. Now dont get me wrong, I'm not saying that the way this year's team has played so far doesnt completely gut me as a fan. I've even taken my shots at Joker in the game threads on ASOB. Mainly for the descision making in games by his entire coaching staff. (including himself) And for giving fans what I feel like was false impression of how "good" this team truly was. Now while these thing's do make me feel that we have taken a step back from where Brook's left off are we really to the point that Joker is on the preverbial "Hotseat?" With the news yesterday that rivals has our current recruiting class for 2012 ranked #22nd in the nation (Keep in mind the 2011 class wasnt even in the top 50.) Do we jumpship on Joker so easily? Does it not beg to reason that if he can get classes like that while were struggling that there is hope for him? Granted, it looks like we are in for a long season thats for sure. We are prolly gonna get pummeled in our next 2 games (although I feel we have a decent shot at S.C considering how hungry our team will be for a W after the beatdowns we had and are about to recieve from the Gators and the current rank #1 team in the nation LSU) but there is alot of football left to play and I feel that these guys might be able to pull a 6-6, 7-5 season if we can get the fundametals of our game sound and if the coaching staff can make some sane playcalling. If they can't it will certianly be a 3-9, 4-8 kinda year.
I guess what im getting at is Brooks was a veteran coach, came out of retirement to coach at UK. Remember that he came in when our program was in shambles and the long road he had to hoe to get it where it was when Joker took over. Remember the shellacking we took from LSU in the Brooks era that turned the program around. Joker got the program at a high point, and I did expcet him to do better considering he had his hands in building the team he took over. But we lost somthing like 65% of our offensive production from last year? As hard as it may be for us to accept we have to be rational as fans. When you lose those types of playmakers your going to struggle. Its not just the coaches that make the team run its the players as well. The guys out there over throwing recievers and dropping perfectly passed footballs. Lets really give Joker a legitimate chance to do somthing here before we chase him off. Lets see how this year plays out and where we are when the dust settles. If we have a bad year and reload with a #22 class only to it struggle like this again then i think we have a real case against Joker. So far I just dont see enough evidence to call for his ousting even though this is the most painful year of football ive seen in a very long time. heres a poll, thoughts and comments always appreciated =)
