Big Blue Nation Linkapalooza: Dick Vitale Detonation Edition

Dick Vitale has had it, and he isn't going to waste his time with you radio cynics out there.  Just listen, and enjoy.

Man, Dick was very much excited in that conversation, and he was having none of the suggestion that Calipari has cheated, or that "all coaches violate the rules."  Not.  Buying.  That.  Crap.

Good for Dick.  Sometimes, these radio hosts go over the top.  I think that message was sent, and pretty much recieived.

It's not a great line for Miller

But there are at the very least 3 other players on the team that I would point to before getting to Darius.

And that video is hilarious!

There is certainly blame enough to go around.

I’m just struck by the familiarity of Miller’s line. I don’t blame him.

I get that

Speaking more generally, I think Miller is unfairly singled out when he has a bad game and that goes back to last season.

CBS has some video of the game, all USA highlights and not much to speak of, but it’s something.

I think ...

… people do fail to appreciate Miller sometimes. I also think that Miller has a tendency to allow himself to blend into the background and not be selfish enough.

He’s going to have to show more leadership this year as the lone freshman in or near the starting lineup. I love that he is a great team player, but he is an almost automatic mismatch with his combination of size and shooting. We really need him to demand the ball more.

What he does on the WUG team isn’t necessarily what we will see, and I think most people know that. He was great in Canada last year, but wasn’t quite as aggressive in the regular season.

I am pulling for him to have a great year. I know he can. The question is, will he allow himself to do so?

We'll just have to see if

Coach Cal can do a better job of getting Miller involved than Matt Painter. I would venture to say “Yes”.

I would think so as well.

Although that isn’t meant as a negative toward Painter. He is a great coach.

True

I think Coach Cal knows Miller strengths better and obviously has more time to work with him and the team to take advantage of those strengths. The college season gives him more time to practice and develop a team.

And that video.

Wow, I’m glad I wasn’t drinking a beverage. I would have had an explosive nasal enema. :-)

"Nuclear" Minter

First time I’ve seen and heard Coach Minter. My, he is a throwback. Close my eyes and I can picture sitting in front of the circular-tube Admiral TV watching the Bear Bryant Sunday TV show and hearing comments regarding Steve Meilinger, Ray Correll, et al. Hope the results turn out as well as those years.

Brian Adams likes the young receivers.
I want to like them, too.

My first thought was, why is a Canadian rock-singer in his late 40’s checking out our receivers- is he a UK fan? My second thought was…. wow… that might be kind of creepy.

But then I googled the singer and was reminded that he spells his name Bryan Adams, not Brian Adams (who I now am aware is himself a receiver on the team.)

So now everything is cool, except that I presently have a rotation of the songs “Run to You”, “Summer of ’69” and “Heaven” running through my head.

So do you now. If you’re old like me and remember them….

Oh, I remember them.

In fact, I loved them. Bryan Adams was one of my favorites in the 1980s.

The good and the truly dumb

loved Dicki V.’s response to the b.s. of the "un-named " co-host as he tried to whitewash the guilty by applying the tarbrush to “all NCAA coaches”.

As to the comments of the former AD of UM, and current NCAA infractions chair, I think the keys are right in his very self serving satement (with my emphasis added):

Dee, who was AD until 2008, said whenever he got "word from the street’’ that Hurricane players were hanging out in the wrong places, he tried to put a stop to it. When he heard football players were visiting Club Rolexx, a North Miami strip club, he sent someone to check and the Canes were prohibited from going back.

"We tried to be careful, and we did a pretty good job, but we should have done more,’’ he said. "All we can do now is wait for the truth to come out, take our medicine if it comes, and learn from it. But it pains me tremendously to see such sensational stories and headlines. UM is getting creamed again, and everyone around the country loves it. We will survive, though. We will survive.’’

No claim of being a neutral in this one is there? Anyone buying this guys “we really tried” act?

Funny part is, the guy asking the question was not the guy that set up the interview, and the one who

actually had a prior relationship with Vitale. The other guy ambushed Vitale, and then whined when it didnt work…..hilarious…….I wish people could lose their jobs over stunts like that. I am not saying it couldnt have been handled better by Vitale…but hey, I would have wanted to come through the phone and just pop the guy and get it overwith.

Vitale had no way to defend his position without that guy trying to make him look like a chump. Ambush journalism…….what a concept!

Enjoyed the football links (as always)

I like to read outside perspectives on the football team. The one from the Montgomery Advisor seems to echo all the others – “Unless a new Derrick Locke or Randall Cobb appears from thin air, the Wildcats will have trouble gaining ground….”. Well, duh.

From the words that keep coming out of the practices/scrimmages things seem to be in good shape on that front. A lot of that Locke/Cobb production was due to an offensive line that created running space for the runs. The combination of that line returning to add another year experience and the positive comments on Sanders/Clemons make me much more confident going into the year. The receiving component will be important but Joker has time to ratchet that aspect as the team gains more experience. The first couple of games can be won with the running game.

I disagree with the comment in the write-up “Losing a veteran quarterback like Hartline wasn’t nearly as painful as the departures of the top two playmakers.”. I’m more concerned with the Hartline to Newton transition. It may be the coaches desire to reach perfection at quarterback; but comments from Coach Sanders like "I think Morgan’s on track." and “making a lot of progress” gives me pause.

Trevathan"s “We just didn’t do the things off the field to take care of business.” comment. Was that a little swipe at Hartline for missing the Compass Bowl or indication of his motive to return and absolutely raise havoc on offenses?

BTW – Never knew that WKU was “smash mouth type team”, at least, according to Nuke.

My perspectives feel hurt.

I like to read what outsiders see as well. Mostly it is our weaknesses we read about, so I guess there is some sort of balance to my madness. :-)

Calipari Top "New" Coach

It’s the slow time of year when lists abound. Here’s one for best debut seasons. Calipari #1, Gillispie (A&M) #3.

New "smear" on John Wall

Reading the comments about Coach Cal One the “best debut seasons” (see above) I ran across the usual rants about cheating by Calipari teams, and a new one (to me), that John Wall supposedly cheated on his SATs. Hmmm? Hadn’t heard this before, so I Googled John Wall & SAT and came up with a headlined article from the Cornell Daily Sun.(April 1, 20ll)
http://cornellsun.com/files/2011.04.01.joke_.back_.page_.small_.pdf
The important thing to note is the date. this April Fool’s story has evidently been accepted as gospel by some Cal-haters, and it is going to show up (well it already has), so now you know what it is and can cut their knees out from under them when they raise this cannard.

John Engvall says it so well
