POLL: Duke and UNC to the SEC. Would You Be OK With That?

SEC! SEC! SEC! (didn't want to start out with ROLL TIDE)

Hey guys,

We've been having a rather lively debate over at RollbamaRoll on the thought of Duke and UNC being the 13th and 14th teams in the SEC. Find the original article here. Some believe that UK fans would love the thought of the evil Dukies and Heels joining the ranks due to the added strength of schedule. It also would add football and basketball recruiting markets that the SEC lacks right now.

It is my opinion and that of my fathers (who is the biggest Wildcat fan I know. He painted his out door kitchen UK blue for crying out loud) That ya'll would absolutely hate the idea of UNC and especially Duke joining the conference.

So, I leave it up to you fine folks to settle the debate..Yay or Nay? WHAT SAY YOU?! By all means answer the poll question but also come over to RBR and throw out ya'lls thoughts.

Roll Tide and GO Cats!

You will not get many yes votes.

The wording will affect that. Mostly because we don’t love dUKe. Many feel the total opposite while some only tolerate them. I have never seen anyone here comment that they loved them. :-)

I vote yes

Simply because Duke would not be able to chicken out of playing UK in Rupp..

Absolutely - Bring'em On!

Matt Dover over on RBR has it right – having Duke and UNC in the SEC would be incredible from a Kentucky basketball perspective (and it would add two football opponents we could beat – not an entirely bad thing). With the three top basketball programs in the country, It would immediately catapult SEC basketball to the same toplofty status as SEC Football. As mentioned over on RBR, we already have a long standing home-and-home series with the Tarheels and have been trying to get one with Duke for years – they won’t play us for some reason.

However, having said we Kentucky fans’d enjoy the chance to kick their candy-blue aṡṡes in basketball, you-all really wouldn’t like Duke football even a little bit! Duke’s Wallace Wade Stadium is on par with Camron Indoor – built in the 1920’s, it has a capacity of around 30K. It only fills-up when they play UNC or a team whose fans travel.

North Carolina’s Kenan Memorial Stadium was also originally built in the 1920’s but has been enlarged/renovated a number of times so it holds about 60K – smaller than Commonwealth but a pretty nice looking facility overall.

Note to ‘Bama fans: UNC has a rule that makes it impossible to expand Kenan any further – the stadium can’t be any taller than the pine trees that are planted around it – cutting them down or poisoning them would only make it worse … don’t even think about it. ;-)

Not sure about the financial angle, but purely from the basketball perspective: "I Vote, ‘Yes!’ "

Yeah....

Bama traveled to play Duke in Durham this past season. The stadium was full, but was about 2/3 Bama fans. So basically they would be another Vandy in football, but I think that’s fine. The SEC has plenty of football powers. We are already getting A&M so we don’t need more great football programs.

Fun Fact Duke’s Wallace Wade Stadium is named after former Bama coach Wallace Wade who led the Tide to its first national title in 1925 in the Rose Bowl. After some sort of dispute he left Bama for Duke sometime in the 30s and also took that team to a Rose Bowl as well.

If we could get Duke and UNC basketball though that would be fantastic! Wouldn’t do much for Bama’s fledgling bball program, but it certainly would be a lot of fun. If we ever plan to get anywhere with bball we would have to beat those type of quality teams in the tournament anyway so maybe some toughening up during the regular season wouldn’t hurt.

Hell yes!!!!

That means UK would play Florida, UT, Alabama, Vandy, UNC, and Duke in conference. Twice!!! Are you kidding me? Now add Louisville and Memphis and lets call it a day. Add a combination of KU, Mich. State, UCLA, Arizona, or Syracuse to the out of conference schedule and I would be in basketball heaven.

Hell, Yes!

Bring them on. Two reasons:

  • It would allow Kentucky the opportunity to get better at football;
  • Beating those two is what we live for.

wow..gotta admit

im a little surprised. I figured your hate for Duke would over power the thought of them in the SEC…

Much like Alabama fans in football, I forget how confident UK fans are about basketball. Good stuff.

Thanks.

Fearlessness in basketball is, and should be, our stock-in-trade, just as it is with Alabama fans and football. I have no doubt that if Texas were to join the SEC, you guys wouldn’t bat an eye.

I guess I'm in the minority

On the football side, Duke would be an even easier win than Vandy. UNC is was getting better, but who knows how they’ll be going forward. They do have some history in football though, so I don’t think you could count on them being in the same class as Vandy/Duke beyond the immediate future.

I get why it would be a popular idea to play them in basketball every year, but I think it’s nice to retain that special novelty of seeing them primarily when it matters most – in the NCAAT. As much fun as it would be to run them out of Rupp every year, it’s even MORE fun to end their tournament run, and that will tend to happen more often if they are in a different conference than UK.

Also, UK dominates the SEC in basketball and I don’t like to share.

Heh.

I can understand that, but frankly, you are only truly great when you test yourself against the best. Duke and UNC are two of the best, and taking them on up to three more times each would be fine with me.

But your point is very well made.

give me a break!!!!!!!

Why would we want to share the wealth with either team———my disgust with crying Roy is reason enough to oppose the game—-it’s not that I am afraid to play them my question is WHY??? Coach K and Pukies is another matter——-I have never felt threatened by the Pukies——-it’s the Refs we have watch out for!!!!!!! Our Cats are OUR CATS——-Win, lose or draw!!!!!! They give their all and that is all I expect from our teams. They are like our on kids, we are thrilled with the wins and saddened by a loss, but the are ours and THERE IS ALWAYS ANOTHER DAY.

It's about the strength of the conference, not the opposition.

Duke and UNC would dramatically change the way basketball is seen in the SEC from the outside. We become the toughest Basketball conference in the country, to go along with the fact that we are already the toughest Football conference……it’s a win-win situation. Duke and UNC are already also-rans in their conference in Football, they compete against us every year and manage to win the conference a time or two, it just adds to the legitimacy of the entire conference.

I'm for Duke at the minimum getting in and placed in the East division along with UK

I would give anything to see twice a year that scrunched up looking weasel face of Coach K’s after getting beat by the Cats in conference and maybe a third time in the SEC tournament. My God what would Dickey Vee have to say about all this – Baby..?
