Andy Katz of ESPN is reporting this morning that multiple source are telling him Kentucky coach John Calipari will receive and sign a two year contract extension Monday morning. I'm sure most of the Big Blue Nation will welcome this news. Here is the money quote from Katz's article:
This latest contract improvement is another indicator that Calipari will stay with Kentucky instead of going to the NBA as he has been speculated to do so since arriving in Lexington. NBA teams aren't paying salaries in this range anymore, meaning Calipari has somewhat priced himself out of the NBA market.
I wish this were true, but the reality is that Calipari did not come to Kentucky for the money to begin with, although I'm sure he expected to be well compensated, and his leaving will likely not be all about the money either. So while this certainly will make it more expensive for NBA teams to poach Coach Cal, it hardly forecloses the possibility.
In the end, though, if he was worth what we paid him when he came here, he is certainly deserving of a raise after going 64-12 in 2 years at Kentucky with an Elite Eight and Final Four appearance, not to mention back-to-back SEC tournament championships.
Congratulations to coach Calipari.
