UK's Terrence Jones Named SEC Freshman of the Year
The SEC coaches have spoken, and they have named Kentucky's Terrence Jones the league Freshman of the Year. Jones along with Brandon Knight find themselves on the First Team All-SEC list, and Doron Lamb joins the two on the SEC All-Freshman team. UK's outstanding junior defender, DeAndre Liggins, was deservedly named to the All-Defensive Team.
Florida's picture of versatility, forward Chandler Parsons, was named SEC Player of the Year, and in a selection I slightly disagree with, the coaches selected Florida's Billy Donovan SEC Coach of the Year (I thought Anthony Grant from Alabama deserved the honor). To the victors go the spoils.
Congratulations to all of the players honored. To find the complete list of conference honorees, go here.

No real surprises
All SEC teams seem about right. Good to see Liggins make the All-Defense team.
I would probably have gone with Knight over Jones for Freshman of the year, but either choice is a good one.
Donovan achieves the rare trick of being picked to win the conference and then winning COY for doing what was expected. I really, really, REALLY would like to beat the Gators in the SECT – except that would mean they actually made it to the championship game and I would rather them lose their first game.

I am like you j....I would have gone with Knight
But, I have been kind of critical of Jones all year, maybe I am being too hard on the kid. I just dont think he has matured and developed his basketball I.Q. like Knight has. The kid could always play, but he is still making the same mistakes late in the year he was making early in the year. He just does a better job of overcoming them.

Its the old boys coaching club - Grant hasn't been in the league long enough
Cal would have to win the NCAA championship to even be remotely considered. Yahoo Sports voted for Grant as COY by landslide.
Knight should had been freshman of the year and Liggins Defensive player of the year – imo.

I gotta go with BK also, JLev
TJ seemed to fall off as the yr. wears on.

I thought Knight had won-
I thought I read that somewhere this morning…Anyway T. Jones is deserving also…

I will say this though, It is a travesty that Josh Harrellson is nowhere to be seen on any
of the lists, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team.

I agree completely-
His defense and rebounding have been outstanding…

While I like Jorts as much as anyone
Who would you take off the 2nd team to give him a spot? I can’t honestly say that Josh has been better than any of the guys already on the squad.
If there was a Most Improved Player (and there really should be) then Josh would win that in a cakewalk.

that's a good point
So maybe it wouldn’t be a cakewalk, but I think Josh edges him.

When I look at things like Player Of the Year
I look at it like this – would you trade Knight for Parsons – not me.

Is Quod Ut
Donovan won for the same reasons that Stallings won last year: brotherhood, likeability and tenure.
Muldrow over Liggins, et al due to measureable numbers, I.e. blocks, DR’s.
I, too, would have chosen Knight over Jones but season-long Jones was better due to his early-season numbers vs Knight’s early errors.
Knight, Jones and Lamb on all-frosh team is another (as if one is requred) tribute to Calipari’s recruiting acumen.

Coin toss
Coach Calipari said on the news that teams were only allowed to nominate one player for each award. Since they couldn’t decide between Jones and Knight for freshman of the year, Cal told Dwayne Peevy to decide with a coin toss. Jones won the coin toss and was nominatedfor freshman of the year. Knight was then nominated for player of the year, with the understanding that the POY awards would probably not go to another player.
Interesting
Now that you mention it I vaguely recall hearing something along those lines last year too, but had forgotten. I expect we’ll have to be reminded of the One Nominee rule every year while Cal is coach.
