Neither game was close and both went against me, but did we have fun. Lots happened but in the interest of time will only hit the highlights.
We targeted section 126 and when we got there, 40 or 50 men and boys decked out in BYU gear were there crowding the exit from 126 and 124. Some had managed to get past the ushers and were down in these two sections trying to trade or buy the Morehead seats. Security had to get involved and clear room for folks to exit.
As MSU fans exited they were being offered $20-$40 per seat for the second game. Keep in mind this is inside the arena so one has already paid, but folks were willing to pay additional amounts to improve their seats for the BYU Gonzaga game. I thought, good for the students of MSU, their team lost, but they can pick up some beer money for the long ride home. Tickets were changing hands fast and furious, mostly to BYU fans, but some to Zags. I chatted up a guy my age in a UK shirt. He was a MSU alumni and couldn't decide if he was staying for the next game. I offered to take his tickets off his hands, but only for free. He couldn't decide. Some friends wandered by and I said hey and we chatted for a while. Their oldest daughter is at Gonzaga, but unable to make the trip to Denver.
The UK shirt decided he was leaving and gave me the four tickets. I promised I wouldn't sell them, but give them to some other friends of mine. Which I did, but before we headed to our new seats in section 126, I sold our four tickets for $10 each. I hope the boys who bought them were happy with them.
What a game. As skilled as the Zags are, the could not keep up with BYU's shooting nor could they withstand BYU's physical play. BYU pounded Gonzaga every time the ball went inside. Just beat on them. For all of Sacrae's talent he is soft and ponderous and he just got whipped. The refs were allowing physical play and that was completely to BYU's advantage. BYU, like good teams do, took advantage, built a lead and then the Jimmer show began. Oh my, every time he shot one could hear several thousand people suck in their breath and when he made it, there was an explosion. It was a great show...just great. Zags got smashed and BYU has a chance to get to the Final Four. Really they do. Officiating will matter, but they might get there.
BYU joining the WCC is huge for the WCC and will improve the physicality of an already skilled conference. Can't wait for the rematch.
- Morehead was about as stagnant against UR as a team can be. Never got what they were trying to do or why they were trying to do whatever it was. Morehead's offense played them out of the game. UR played good defense and positioned well on offense, but still.
- As the UR/MSU game wound down I said to younger daughter, let's head over there to where MSU fans are sitting and see if we can snag some better seats. Our seats were only a few rows off the floor, but the basket support blocked us a bit. I can't believe what happened after that...
