2011 Early Signing Period: First Day Open Thread

There's not a lot going on that's Kentucky-centric for the first day of the 2011 Early Signing Period. Last year, all four of our stud freshmen (catch 'em on the court this year!) signed on the day one. This year, Kentucky has just two commitments--Willie Cauley and Archie Goodwin.

Cauley is expected to sign today at 11:45 ET, with a live press conference being broadcast from his school. If you're curious, check out the link here. Goodwin isn't expected to sign until next week, as his school is planning festivities as well and wasn't able to finalize logistics until next Monday.

Kentucky is recruiting a few prospects that are expected to sign early, but not decide by today. For more, check out this ASoB post from yesterday.

In the meantime, we'll keep you updated with all the NSD happenings after the jump.

Star-divide

[UPDATE: 9:05am ET] First big news of the day actually happened last night, when 4* PF Ricardo Gathers decommitted from St. John's. LSU and Texas were his two other finalists, but other schools may now jump into the mix. It would be interesting to see if Calipari shows interest should he not get favorable news from Alex Poythress, Amile Jefferson, and Jarnell Stokes in the Early Signing Period.

[UPDATE: 9:15am ET] Per his Twitter account, 5* SG Rodney Purvis signed his LOI with NC State. Purvis was a former Kentucky target and had previously committed to Louisville.

[UPDATE: 9:45am ET] Two former Kentucky targets, 5* SG Ricardo Ledo and 4* SF TJ Warren, signed their LOIs. Ledo is going to Providence, Warren to NC State.

[UPDATE: 10:05am ET] Another former Kentucky target, 5* C Mitch McGary, signed his LOI with Michigan. He picked the Wolverines over Duke and Florida, so...score!

[UPDATE: 10:45am ET] An Indiana blog is reporting that 5* SG Gary Harris will pick Michigan St. whenever he chooses to sign his LOI. However, ESPN's Dave Telep reports that no final decision has been made by Harris and his family and all four finalists--Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue, and Kentucky--are still in play. He hopes to announce within the next couple of days, but no guarantees. Stay tuned.

[UPDATE: 11:30am ET] Two more players that had Kentucky offers are officially off the board to Big 12 schools. 4* PG LJ Rose signs with Baylor, and 4* PF Perry Ellis with Kansas.

[UPDATE: 11:45am ET] IT'S OFFICIAL! WILLIE CAULEY IS A CAT! Welcome to Big Blue Nation, Willie!

[UPDATE: 12:15pm ET] According to Jeff Borzello at CBS, 3* PF Chris Obekpa will sign in the Late Signing Period. He's a high-upside big that has been tangentially linked with Kentucky and may be an option for Calipari if things don't shake out favorably in the Early Signing Period. Obekpa's list includes Connecticut, Cincinnati, and St. John's, amongst others.

[UPDATE: 1:15pm ET] ESPN has a great (and free!) feature on 5* SF Shabazz Muhammad, Kentucky's main target for the Late Signing Period. Muhammad had this to say about John Calipari: "Coach Cal's personality is great. He pushes his players in practice. That's the thing I'm looking for. I'm trying to get better and get to the next level." Muhammad has already officially visited Kentucky (for Big Blue Madness) and Texas A&M, as well as numerous unofficial visits to UCLA, USC and UNLV. He plans to officially visit Arizona, Duke and Kansas before making a decision in the spring.

[UPDATE: 3:15pm ET] Earlier today, UCLA received LOIs from 5* SF Kyle Anderson along with 4* SF Jordan Adams. Kentucky was very interested in Anderson during his junior season as a point guard, but a huge growth spurt caused Calipari to back off and pursue NC State transfer Ryan Harrow instead. Muhammad and Anderson have expressed interest in playing together, and it's a strong possibility that Shabazz eventually joins Kyle in Westwood.

[UPDATE: 3:20pm ET] Also earlier today, 5* PF Brandon Ashley inked his LOI with Arizona. Ashley had Kentucky on his list of finalists, but decided to stay closer to home. As of now, Arizona has the top class in the nation, with Ashley in tow along with 5* C Kaleb Tarczewski, 5* PF Grant Jerrett, and 4* PG Gabe York.

[UPDATE: 5:45pm ET] My last update of a day is a reminder: Alex Poythress will announce his decision tomorrow at 1:30 pm from his school, Clarksville Northeast. Kentucky is still very much in it, but don't be shocked if he chooses to stay in state and play for Memphis or Vanderbilt. Stokes, Jefferson, and Harris are still TBD.

This recruiting class

I have a question for everyone. I’m a junkie like other UK fans. And lately I keep hearing these comments here and there, from various sources. Comments that say basically: “UK fans are pretty nervous” or “UK fans are getting pretty stressed out” over the lack of commitments in this upcoming class.
AM I CRAZY?? Is any fan really nervous or anxious about the upcoming class? (other than the ridiculous 1%).
Do people really have an issue with the possibility that UK might only get a top 10 class? I just can’t believe it. Cal has brought in three #1’s and has 2 five stars in this upcoming class. UK and Cal have 2013 and 2014 pretty much locked up from what I have read (although there are no commitments, with Cal I have learned what it means for him to be “in with” 8 of the top 10 in those classes) .
So I am really having a hard time thinking that anybody has any kind of issue with Cal not having another #1 class this year.
So my question is, do you all get the feeling that the fan base is stressing? Or is this just media crap being printed to make it seem like UK fans are just unable to be pleased.??

Gives people something to talk about is all.

I don’t think any fan with half a brain has worried about recruiting in the last 24 months

I think it's overblown

I’m sure that yes, there are UK fans out there who are legitimately worried about the recruiting for next season, but I would be surprised if they constitute more than 1% of the fanbase.

1/x doesn't die, it just fades away.

Offseason stuff

I think it’s just something for fans to talk about during the offseason. There was nothing to worry about with the 2011 season, so we shifted to 2012. It’s particularly funny this year because we don’t know what the NBA rules will be. It’s entirely possible that we strike out on all our remaining targets, but even if that happens and we lose some one and dones I expect we’ll have enough talent next year to make the tourney and maybe win the SEC.

I don’t think you’ll see much chatter about recruiting worries now that the season is about to start. Everyone will be too busy dreaming about the possibilities for the current Cats.

All you have to do...

Just think about what Cal did two years ago during the late signing period. I’m not nervous. Things will fall into place.

by cthom on Nov 9, 2011 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

I think the fan base is stressing.

Just a feel. I’m not too worried, but let me make the case. We’ve lost out on some big names, big men in particular. Players Cal clearly wanted. We see other schools getting his targets. If you looked at the ESPNU 100 list in mid-September, you were struck by the absence of commitments to UK. Not one. We’re not used to that. So yes, I think it’s much more than the 1 percent who are stressing. And not without basis. As the markets will tell you, uncertainty is unsettling.

by Wheatgerm on Nov 9, 2011 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

I'm nervous.

Not because we won’t have a good class, but because it might not be enough.

We might loose Alex P and we aren’t favored to get anyone else really. In years past, we were considered favorites to get Wall and others.

The class we have now, with our transfer PG, is a good class. But if we loose 5 or 6 players this year, we need a total team to come in. What we have now is 2 quality starters and a quality role player. But if Poole leaves, all we may have to go with that is 1 of this years top 7, two transfers (one a walk on), a walk on back up, and an injury redshirt player who has never contributed.

I think the only fans not worried must hang out with Alfred E. Neuman.

It doesn't look like we'll get Harris

Although I love that with Harris, Jefferson, and Stokes, Cal has shown he can get in on pretty much any player no matter how late he starts recruiting him.

Rumors

Earlier in the day he had allegedly made his decision but was waiting to announce it until he could call Izzo. Izzo was en route to San Diego for the Carrier Classic.

I know it's greedy.....but I am seeing this as a door to watching another one of Bobby Knight's records get taken away from him

I want that undefeated season of his that he values so much and holds over everyone’s heads.

Numbers Not Ratings

Considering that UK could lose 5-7 players from the current roster I’m more concerned about number of signees rather than ranking of individuals (a couple of 4* wouldn’t be diastrous) as well as class. Fortunately the NBA draft rules are likely to be determined prior to April 11

Agree 100%. Posted this elsewhere, but it is more relevant here:

Assuming the worst case (from a 2012/13 roster standpoint), if the new NBA CBA remains the same regarding draft eleigibility…

Cal must go forward assuming that UK will lose Terrance Jones (draft), Darius Miller (graduation), likely Stacey Poole (trasfer), Eloy Vargas (graduation), Anthony Davis (draft), and Marquis Teague (draft).

I think it is fair to think that Doron Lamb and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist will remain at UK for another year because (1) the 2012 draft will be DEEP, and (2) neither of them has the physical features to warrant the high pick to play the 2 in the NBA that would lure either of them out of Lexington early. With that, the 2012/13 contributers would be Lamb, Kidd-Gilchrist, Wiltjer, Harrow, Hood (assuming he comes back from the injury without complication), Goodwin, and Cauley.

Cal needs AT LEAST three more incoming players that will be capable of contributing in 2012/13… and that may be hard to do if other programs are telling the remaining unsigned players that the NBA CBA will likely require players to be two years removed from high school in order to be eleigible for the draft and therefore minutes would be very difficult to come by in 2012/13 in Lexington.

Lamb and MKG

My money says both of them will be gone after this year, though I feel more confident about MKG than Lamb. MKG is already projected to be a Top 10 pick on some boards.

Not sure about Poole. The longer this drags out, the more likely he stays, I think.

by UKfaninDC on Nov 9, 2011 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

If Gillie stays, it won't be because of low draft stock

Gillie is already highly rated on internet draft boards and, based on the exhibitions, he may be underrated. I think he might have a Shane Battier-type intangible quality that teams love. Gillie has legit physical traits for the NBA 3, so his size won’t keep him here either. If he stays, it’ll be because he wants to go in the draft even higher next year or because he likes the college experience. Still, we’re not in dire straits if both leave.

Harrow and Wiltjer could be star level players next year, with Goodwin being an above average player and Cauley a legit starter. Hood may or may not be at adequate starter level at 3 next year (probably not). Beckham and Polson are likely to be adequate backup guards. A return of either Lamb or Gillie instantly make us Final Four caliber (as does maybe Shabazz). If both leave and Shabazz goes elsewhere, we really need some other SF recruit. The obvious weakness in either case is the lack of a third big man, but worst case is presumably that Dominican Juco player.

In my opinion, UK is not likely to field a National Championship type team next year if the sophomores and top 3 freshmen. Shabazz is really the only way. However, an SEC title contender could still be pieced together without Shabazz or a returning star. In conclusion, we should fret less. There’s a 98% UK will be fielding a tournament team next year, and you never know what can happen once you get there.

Still A Chance For Calipari Magic

UK’s recruiting class currently not in top 5 but Adam Zagoria says there’s still a chance — although there’s no program changer. Hmm, seems to me Shabbazz might fit the bill.

The way Cal recruits I think it would be much harder for one kid to be a"program changer" here.....

But I do see the logic….and Shabazz definitely fits the bill….you are 100% right

Changer?

As it is, I don’t think our program needs to change. ;)

i've been waiting for this moment all my life...but it's not quite right.

2 year rule

From what I heard on the radio today, the players want a 3 year college rule & the owners want a 1 year rule. The moderator of this show was saying that they would most likely compromise on a 2 year rule.
If that happens, watch out, we may just go on a run that hasn’t been seen since the 1960’s.

Shabbazz Is Blessed

Has it all now so he’ll wait to sign late. Oh, BTW, he’s impressed by Calipari, but more visits to take and other impressions to be made.
