Big Blue Nation Linkapalooza: Basking in the Afterglow of Victory Edition
The Kentucky Wildcats true freshman Maxwell Smith helped running back CoShik Williams and linebackers Danny Trevathan and Winston Guy lead Kentucky to victory over the Mississippi Rebels yesterday. Much celebration ensued.
Today's Linkapalooza posits as many questions as the results today answered. Plus, there was a little game down in Tuscaloosa that had everyone's attention as well. Finally, I have reaction from the respective SB Nation bloggers on a vast array of big football games yesterday.

Just read that Missouri
has been accepted into the SEC. They will be placed in the East Division.
I woke up feeling BLUE this morning. It's gonna be a great day.
I am so excited about this!
For their athletes and for their fans. This is a GREAT move for the SEC, and I for one can’t wait for us to play both TAMU and Mizzou!

In honor of our 2 new teams, I have to ask:
Is there some sort of guide anywhere about the must-do’s and traditions for each of the SEC schools?
This could be handy for SEC newbies as well as fans who finally have enough cash on hand (read: are senior enough in their careers) to go roadtripping without cases of Milwaukee’s Best and Ramen Noodles as their 2 main food groups.
Just a thought.

Glenn, I am going to make a big deal out of this link, which may not have been up when you did these
however, I think it bears our attention.
For everyone who does not believe that Mitch Barnhart is the man to lead UK Athletics, just take a look at this article……
It proves the point that some have been making all along. Our football problems are so much bigger than Mitch, who does a whole lot more than most with a whole lot less.

Thanks GAE
Appreciate link, good read, new perspective. Confirmation of what should have been obvious: UK made its choice in middle of last century and will have to live with the consequences. I do expect that sports economics (read: football becoming the overriding factor in reorganization) will eventually force the University to rethink its priorities.

Greg, I agree ...
I was just about to make a fan post when I checked and found your comment.
If UK athletics had the benefit of keeping the $85 million it earns annually, it would have the same revenue resources to develop facilities and field teams as LSU. But cut out $20 million to fund University programs and operations and you put UK Athletics in the same revenue category as, say, Virginia. And, when you when you lump on top of that the fact of the Trustee’s refusal to allow UK Athletics access to bonding and you put our programs on the same financial footing as Vanderbilt. (ESPN Reference Article)
And that’s not the end of the ‘PROBLEM’ by a long shot. You have individuals on the faculty and other constituency groups constantly railing against athletics keeping even as much as they do, e.g. the political science professor Ernie Yanarella who made the fuss last April in the University Senate wanting to take up to another $9 million from UK Athletics for the University’s general fund – for faculty raises. (Tipton Article)
And finally, it is only because the UK Athletics Association has been able to fend off such demands over the years that things haven’t gotten much worse. They were able to because the UKAA is quasi-independent from Trustee budget oversight, reporting directly to the President of the University. Tragically, that independence is coming to an end.
Until now, the UKAA had control of spending on program budgets and such items as coach salaries, construction programs and other athletics specific activity. But, when President Todd gave Mitch Barnhart that new 10-year contract and big raise, without telling anybody before hand just as he went out the door, it pissed a large group of the trustees off. Now, the Trustees are using the chance presented by bringing in a new University President without a strong athletics background (or interest, imo) to take away the UKAA’s independence by putting them under a 5-trustee oversight committee. (Herald Leader Article)
Putting a politically sensitive group like the trustees in charge of such a large heretofore off-limits UK Athletics budget is a temptation I don’t think they will be able to resist. Mark my words, I think this financial situation is fated to get Significantly Worse!
I didn't take the article to mean
“the fact of the Trustee’s refusal to allow UK Athletics access to bonding” but rather it is hindering bonding. I could easily be wrong but it wouldn’t be the first time.
War is God's way of teaching Americans geography. - Ambrose Bierce
Quote from the article...
Among SEC athletic departments, only UK has to go to trustees for permission to take on its own debt — debt that the athletics department alone would repay — for facilities construction. In the decade of this AD’s tenure, the trustees received $820 million in bonding debt authority. Athletics got a whopping $7 million.
You are correct that there was 'some' bonding allowed in the early part of Barnhart's term, $7 million, ...
but nothing recently, and given the needs of the UK Athletics, $7 million is a pitifully small some. My concern is that the Trustees will not only continue to limit access to bonding, and thereby short necessary facilities renovation and replacement, but not keep pace with salaries for football and, ultimately, basketball. Can you see the Trustees Spending $5 million to land Cal replacement? I can’t.
“The trustees are within their rights to pick winners and losers in the competition for bonding dollars. I love football, but acknowledge plenty of competing needs. Have we starved the goose that lays $20 million in golden eggs annually to help fund those competing needs? Maybe the question deserves some public discourse.” – Ballard Cassady, president/CEO of the Kentucky Bankers Association, is a member of the University of Kentucky Athletics Board
I am out of town for a funeral...
… so I missed it. But I put it up on the front page last night.
Thanks for binging it to our attention, Greg.
