Big Blue Nation Linkapalooza: Post-Transylvania Edition
When do you call a 44-point victory "close?" Apparently, we saw that last night -- that is, if you only watched the first ten minutes. But there is no doubt that Kentucky's start could have been better, and the intensity could have been higher. That's the main subject of today's links, but not the only one.

I'm not "an alarmist" like Calipari. I saw just about what I expected to see. - Joker Phillips teaches how to read the pass defense pre-snap.

Nick Fasulo writes about the ten great things to look forward to this season.
I really like the last one. Really. A super, super lot. -
Marquis Teague said Transy was "baiting" the 'Cats into shooting threes.
This is just what happens when you are young -- you don't understand the game as well as you think. Of course Tansy wanted you to shoot threes instead of easy 2-footers. Hello!
-
Calipari says Kidd-Gilchrist must start.
That's because he knows that every game is a life or death struggle. That's the attitude it takes to go all the way to New Orleans. -
Matt Roark says that he was not "looking" the ball into his hands.
This is a typical problem for wide receivers dropping the ball. The thing that bugs me is it's one they usually have figured out by the time they are seniors. -
Is 44 ponts "close?"
Seriously, the game was much closer than it should have been in the first half. -
Butler bows to Division II Northern State.
Butler has lost a lot the last two years. They are definitely in rebuilding mode. -
Coach Cal says Kentucky has "a long way to go."
He's right. Last night showed that this team right now is only a shadow of what it needs to be. But I'm pretty sure he believes they can get there. -
CollegeHoops.net on conference realignment.
Most are against it. -
Mike Miller says point guard depth is an issue for UK, UNC and UConn.
Based on what I saw last night, I'd say he's right. Doron Lamb did not look comfortable at the point. -
Rush the Court says Calipari was "excited" about the slow start.
Well, he's right -- that's what Calipari said. - I talk with Red Cup Rebellion about the Ole Miss-Kentucky game Saturday.

Only got to watch the first half
but someone told me that Davis had some kind of cramp or possible hamstring injury late in the game. Can someone elaborate?
From Fasulo's column...
“Order will have been restored, but please, Wildcat fans, just be sure to enjoy the ride.”
I may be a bit defensive (I have ardently defended Calipari to Columbus people over the last 3 years), but that do you think he means by, “just be sure to enjoy the ride” ?
I plan on "enjoy[ing] the ride".
I know I read it with a HUGE smile.
I think he meant we should take one game at a time and not focus on April only.
If we do that, a whole lot of fun might be missed along the way. (The last sentence relays only my thoughts.)
:-)

Enjoy the ride
If I remember correctly… ‘98 seemed more enjoyable partly because it was not as expected as ’96. The expectations for ’96 were huge. Sometimes some of the wins were not as enjoyable because we thought we should have won by more. Enjoy it. If Davis doesn’t score double figures every game some fans will focus on “what’s wrong?” Enjoy it. They are young and will make mistakes. In my mind UNC is the favorite at this point. That should take some of the pressure off, but maybe not. Expectations are through the roof.
Fasulo only veered off course one time, in #10.
“…drinking rye whiskey”?. Yes, Kentucky makes rye whiskey but I’d say we’re better known for bourbon varieties. Other than that, I’d drink anything if UK is cutting down the nets in the Big Easy.

Wow that is high praise after one exhibition game!
Personally, I Wiltjer has been bugging me a little because every shot goes short if he’s near the interior. I think he’ll be quite a useful player though. PPat was monstrous. Still my favorite for now.

I like the way he can lay it in off the glass
from a considerable distance away. He’s got great length and great touch.
I didn't say he was going to be an All-American.
I like his game, his attitude, and I like the fact that he committed without even really being recruited.
And he’s going to be in Lex. for more than 1 year.
Well, for me
PPat was more than a player. His inner drive, determination, and his absolutely 100% respecting and loving the name on the front of his jersey put him on my list. We had a little unhappiness on a couple of his teams ya’ know.
I am not sure I will ever see that drive in one year. Just talent hasn’t put anyone on my faves list in my many years of fandom.

This is a good summation for why PPat is so well-liked

Patterson wanted to be here for the name on the jersey
and that is a part of why he is so special. Let’s not forget that Wiltjer committed to UK without even visiting. He wants to be part of this program. And he has an historically great first name. :)
I woke up feeling BLUE this morning. It's gonna be a great day.

I'd still like Kidd-Gilchrist. . .
. .in the sixth man role, just because I think he’ll handle not starting better than Lamb or Miller.
It was only one game, but Davis was unimpressive last night. The blocks don’t mean much against a team with no starter over 6’4". Other than that, he didn’t do much. It might take him a while to get acclimated.

Davis
I think he just had an off night shooting. He needs to adjust to contact. Refs won’t call everything. I like that he still hit the boards and 8 blocks is 8 blocks regardless. He will get a triple double at some point this season.
Davis did not shoot well
but he only had 7 attempts. I think the offense needs to get him more opportunities.
Boom.
My thoughts exactly. The offense was not hitting on all cylinders like it will be later in the season. It just wasn’t – and I did not really expect it to. They still won by over 40. Wait until the offense starts working…

I talked about this on 2nd half thread last night....
We gotta remember that Davis was a PG two years ago! If I grew 9" (or whatever it was) in a year I’d be lucky to have figured out how to walk, let alone play top-notch college hoops, by now… He’s got to learn to play the post, at the D1 level, learn the footwork and get stronger. None of those come overnight via UPS…
Far as I’m concerned, he gets a pass from me all year… The only way he can learn is to play. I’m sure he’ll have some monster games this year but I’m sure he’ll look, shall we say, confused, out of position, lacking at times.
If your wings don't sweep....
Joker's comments from yesterday's practice were kind of telling about Saturday
Smith was “really good” in practice
Newton is still “hobbling”
Roark looks “better”
I think we have our answers about Saturday.

Truth.
If it really was down to this week’s practices and Newton has been that limited, Smith has to get the nod.

For the most part, I agree.
If Newton can go, I expect he’ll play some unless Smith just goes nuts.

Max Smith will be starting Saturday
According to the courier journal…. about time i say.
The biggest thing I took from the hoops game last night is “WOW! This team is FAST.” They definately have alot of work to do before reg season play starts. but you cant help and get amped over the overall speed this team has. I dont think we have ever seem a team this fast at Kentucky. GO CATS!!

Pomeroy
Pomeroy rankings:
If you look at the SEC’s bottom teams you’ll find that Georgia is ranked #59 and Tennessee ranked #108.The Mississippi teams along with Arkansas are inbetween. Man you talk about dragging a conference’s rating down – wow.

Did I read correctly?
Ken Pomeroy is going behind the pay wall this season?

That's my undestanding.
I’ll miss the ratings. Too bad. Gotta do what he’s gotta do. Hope it is everything he hopes it will be.
Kentucky Basketball - The Reason for Living
ratings will still be available
The details/extra stuff is what will be behind the wall
1/x doesn't die, it just fades away.
Thanks!
I’ll keep the link – the basic ratings are what I look at most. He does do a huge amount of calculation and analysis, I certainly do not begrudge him expense money for that. In fact, I want him to get enough to make it worthwhile to continue. Very, very good stuff. Man has a talent.

I will probably be paying the $20
I’m curious to see what he’ll be adding. The blog portion will still be free as well, so you can read what he is working on, you just might not be able to see all the results.

I thought this comment from Lamb was funny
“He was very upset a little bit,” Lamb said of Calipari’s post-game mood.
How can you be a “little bit” “very upset”? Is that like being sort of in the middle?
1/x doesn't die, it just fades away.
I didn't get to see it here in Maryland
But it sure is good to read about ball again. Looking forward to the first game that isn’t on FSS, so maybe I can see it. Go Cats
I'm living in Indiana presently and can't get FSS here either - sucks
A man is nothing more than a summation of his scars!
the replay is available on espn3
1/x doesn't die, it just fades away.
I found it just after I posted, I could have seen the game, since it was on ESPN3.
I gotta remember to check their schedule whenever I can’t get the Cat’s elsewhere.
After watching the replay. I’ll agree, that was spotty and strange. With all the “clumsiness” (not athletically, but team clumsiness); I would have thought Darius would have asserted himself a bit better. Also, TJ needs to go to the rim HARD. He looked tentative.
K-G, we won’t see him next year. This kid is GOOD.
I’m looking forward to the ride. It’s going to be fun. With expectations this high, there is the potential of a hard landing, but I just don’t see that happening. (As long as we stay healthy). Go Cats.
