Sympathy for "Big Red" Mike McQueary

Stay connected for news and updates

Sympathy for Mike McQueary is hard to find, at least publicly.  If you are a die-hard Penn State fan and supporter of JoePa then McQueary is a traitor, Brutus to the mighty Caesar, wielding the fatal dagger.  If  you are among those of us who are horrified by the silence which  enabled Sandusky to continue his horror show at the expense of the lives of several more young men, then "Big Red" did no where near enough.

Jane Leavy has an interesting "open letter" to Mike McQueary of the Penn State Sandusky rape scandal,  She brings some interesting insights as she expresses her sympathy and understanding for his position.

I also heard her interviewed about her letter on the CBC Radio program "Q", and she went into depth about the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome on sexual abuse victims, witnesses, and even in some cases perpetrators.  she also explained the psychological weight of the coach in football, especially in the case of a highly successful coach, which can translate into a saintlike stature, and unquestioned authority.

Among her other points is that Grand Jury's report is a summary of McQueary's testimony, and many of the things which he says he did, like talking to the head of the campus police, may have occurred, although they are not in the report. (It strikes me that this would be especially true if that remained to be proven, as in the case that the contents and even occurance of the interview had been covered up.)
