ESPN 3 Technical Help Open Thread
Some of us are more technologically inclined than others, but since the Cats are only going to be shown live on the internet channel ESPN3, I figured there might be several Luddites that could use some advice before tomorrow.
So i created this post to serve as an open thread for people to ask questions on getting ESPN3 working, ported to their TVs, etc.
To quote Roy from the IT Crowd, "Have you tried turning it off and on again?"

Good for you Strangeite
I think this is a GREAT idea. You have always helped me with “techy” stuff.
Just ask him people. He will help you.

For anyone that have children with xbox 360's
or for those who have one themselves, ESPN has an ESPN3 “app” and streams through the xbox to the TV.

Agreed.
Insight is aware of the demand. I checked the latency on a few different DNS servers and Insight’s DNS server is substantially faster. My best guess is that they KNOW the BBN is going to arrive in waves tomorrow and have updated the registry to the most efficient route possible.
A lot of the time when I have used Insight's internet for a game thread, it bogs down and acts like dial-up. :-(
And that was during a football game.

Could be lots of reasons for that, not all your ISPs fault.
My best guess is if your browser really slowed down during open game threads is that it has more to do with your browser starting to choke on the large amount of comments. I love ASoB but the site design is not the most efficient in the world.
Now I know! Thanks.
Though, I have never had ASoB crash, even during the “hot” events.

Yeah
I think the bigest issue with speed on ASoB seems to be when the game threads get more than a couple hundred comments. When you have several windows open trying to go back and forth like ESPN3 and the game thread on ASoB the memory on many peoples laptops can really get pegged. Then when the 2nd half thread starts it runs a lot better until you get several hundred comments again.
Absolutely no excuse for this to happen
ESPN is doing this as a ploy to get non-Insight cable companies to buy access to ESPN3. It is the same thing that happened when several UK games were shown on ESPNU when that first started. Mitch Barnhart can’t allow ESPN to dictate to UK.

Can anyone say awful "Overhead cam"?
I think they enjoy toying with the BBN.

That was horrid
No more Camera 9 shots. I was getting seasick during that game, and I served for 21 years in the U. S. Navy on destroyers and frigates and never once got seasick.
Yeah the cable system I'm on in Indiana does not subscribe to ESPN3 so I can't access it over the internet - this really sucks
Why can’t UK get regional TV or cable companies to pick up these games. When the season first started I seen two exhibition games on a very unlikely cable channel. Why can’t they still allow this to happen..?

ESPN apparently won't let anyone pick up the game
This is why ESPN is the devil.

Another option...
I have both laptop and desktop PCs. Guess I’m old fashioned, I’ll always have a desktop box, whether it be stand-alone or rack-mounted. You can pack much more capability in a desktop than you can a laptop, although the laptops have come along way in the past 5 years, don’t get me wrong.
My normal setup is to have the laptop up watching the game and then use the desktop to post with… No switching tabs/windows in your browser required at that point. I know some folks don’t have that luxury, but this works for me…
If your wings don't sweep....
Tomorrow morning I will be doing an XBOX 360 setup for my TV.....
so I will be able to talk anyone who needs it through it…..my daughter is helping me…..lol……
all they need to do is buzz me here and I will send them a cell phone number or call them….I have free calling all weekend so it may be easier for me.
I am using a wireless system. I also have a hardwired Cable that I can use, but some newer TV’s require some strange settings…..the wireless through a gaming system are the easiest from what I have been told.
I am now and shall forever be the Cat in The Hat, The Artist Formerly Known As ABC!!!

ESPN3 to your TV
Well, I know I’m in the minority here, but I adore the fact that UK is on ESPN3 because that’s the only way I’ll EVER see any games, living smack dab in the middle of Big Ten country. The Big Ten really likes to pretend the SEC doesn’t exist you know. But I digress…
I found a nifty service called PlayOnTV which enables you to stream a wide variety of “channels” from your computer to your TV using any of the three major gaming consoles. I’ve got a Wii, which doesn’t include ESPN3 as a native channel (unlike xbox), so I gave it a whirl. It worked beautifully for the first half of the UK/KU game. I had technical difficulties during the second half, which I think were a result of ESPN3 itself, not PlayOn.
Cons: PlayOn costs money. I think it’s $39.99 for a year subscription (you can get a week free trial). The interface is kind of clunky, but works once you get the feel for it. And you need a strong wireless connection between your router, your game console, and your PC (or have one of them as a wired connection like I do).
Pros: You have access to not only ESPN3 on your tv, you also have access to all of the broadcast networks’ online episodes, Comedy Central, Hulu, and Amazon Prime (if you have a subscription to it). For someone who doesn’t have cable TV (me!), it’s a pretty sweet deal (I get the Daily Show every night now), and I don’t have to huddle around my computer monitor with my BF to watch a tiny picture of UK marching through the SEC.
Hmmm…I didn’t mean this as such a sales plug for the product (I’m not affiliated with them at all!). But it’s really allowed me access to a lot of TV I wouldn’t otherwise watch, including UK games (which was the main reason I got it in the first place).
You can put it on the board....YES.
I've tried the service didn't think it was worth it.
I just connect my PC to my TV directly. Sometimes the picture on ESPN3 sucks, other times it is pretty close to an HD feed.
Aim for the head baby Jesus
Agreed for those of us NOT in the local area
ESPN3 is a godsend. Still, the picture isn’t very good. I have a nice modern quad core desktop with a bunch of memory and a 23 inch widescreen to view it on, I have FIOS fiber optics direct to the house. I still have to go down to one browser page for ASoB and the ESPN3 feed. I run LINUX, so I can shut down all the other background services I don’t need (who needs a printserver etc while watching basketball?) Even so ESPN3 gets blocky and it often looks like I’m watching the game underwater.
For me it is great that I get to watch more than 6 or 8 games a year now. It seems just plain WRONG to force that quality on the local (KY) users though.
