Kentucky Basketball Recruiting: Archie Goodwin Signs LOI, Officially a Wildcat
In a celebration at his school (Sherwood Sylvan Hills), 2012 shooting guard Archie Goodwin officially became a Kentucky Wildcat by signing his National Letter of Intent. Goodwin joins fellow signed future Cats Alex Poythress and Willie Cauley in Kentucky's recruiting class of 2012. The three-man class is currently rated 2nd best by ESPNU, and features a nice blend of inside-out talent.
Goodwin steps into a great situation when he becomes a Wildcat in the fall of 2012. It's a strong possibility that sophomore guard Doron Lamb will submit his name as an NBA Draft early entrant, while backup shooting guards Jon Hood and Jarrod Polson return. If Lamb does declare as expected, Goodwin would likely slot in as the starting shooting guard next year, and even if Lamb returns, playing time will be ample.
Kentucky will likely try to sign one more wing player in this year's class, and the only target right now is the number one recruit in the country, Shabazz Muhammad. Kentucky had also pursued Gary Harris, who opted instead for Michigan St. and signed in the Early Signing Period.
In other recruiting news, it appears that forwards Amile Jefferson and Jarnell Stokes both have decided not to sign early and will instead wait to commit and sign in the Late Signing Period. The speculation is that a late push by Kentucky for both recruits have them rethinking their decision. Depending on what happens with NBA attrition, Kentucky is targeting taking one to two more bigs in next year's class to go along with Poythress and Cauley.
There will be an updated 2012 Recruiting Big Board posted following the conclusion of the Early Signing Period.

Great news.
Now, we just need some more pieces to go along with them. It’s beginning to look like we might not have an NBA draft in 2012 if the NBA combatants keep playing “can you top this?”

Cal just keeps rollin'...
Possibly no draft next year, and then possible “two and through” rule, we’ll be stacked for a couple of years!
If your wings don't sweep....
Apparently so. I just saw a pic of him signing.

He must be talking about Shaq Goodwin, I guess.
I’m not a member, so I can’t tell.

He's talking about Shaq Goodwin
Committed to Memphis, hasn’t signed.
Personally, I’m quite concerned about the Ridley not signing with Texas scuttlebutt.
Interesting
ESPNU twitter says he is announcing tomorrow. Some are saying he’s visiting Villanova today for the LaSalle game as well, others indicate that’s just a rumor. Wonder what’s true and what isn’t.

Recruiting in an NBA-less world
Does anyone have any thoughts of what might happen to recruiting should the 2012-13 NBA season be in jeopardy, and if this might have a NEGATIVE impact on the Cats?
My thinking is this — currently we have a roster of 6(?) current sophomores and freshmen who would likely go into the 2012 summer NBA draft. However, if that draft does not happen, we then have 6 juniors and sophomores for the 2012-13 season who are talented enough to be first round NBAers, and who are not going to ride the bench at UK in 2012. So, how does Calipari sell the idea of coming to UK as a freshman to someone who would normally be a one-and-done and, in with a normal NBA draft year, be a starting player as a freshman? I don’t think he can sell the immediate playing time angle.
I think this might be a problem that all of the top tier schools (UK, Duke, Kansas, UNC) might have. Will these top high school recruits start looking more closely at the second tier schools, where they might be more likely to start as freshmen because the classes before them haven’t been so loaded? Or will we see a return of multiyear players and the acceptance by exceptional freshman recruits that they will not get the playing time they might have expected before?
Either way, the talent level across college basketball is going to be spectacular for potentially the next two years, and I say to the NBA bazillionaires: keep fighting amongst yourselves.
You can put it on the board....YES.
As problems go ...
… I’ll take this one every time.
Plus, if the NBA has a protracted multi-year shutdown, Europe might start taking shots at the younger players. They’ll be more affordable than the NBA types, and less likely to leave once the NBA (or whatever succeeds it) comes back.

Now that Poole is leaving, can you imagine getting all three of them??
