Big Blue Linkapalooza: Kansas Week Edition
This morning, the Linkapalooza looks at the upcoming game with Kansas, the continuing travails of the Kentucky Wildcats football team, and the very early returns on the college basketball season.
So far, in basketball, the SEC is a mixed bag. Vandy lost yesterday at home to Cleveland St., and Mississippi State lost at home last week to the Akron Zips. Everyone else in the SEC so far has held serve. Of the big six conferences, only the SEC, Big 10 and Pac-12 have losses. The SEC and Pac-12 have major upsets so far: the SEC with Vandy and Mississippi St., and the Pac-12 with UCLA, who lost the other night to Loyola Marymount.
On a side note, I am very glad basketball is here.

Ira Combs says Phillips should keep it simple.
I've said it before and I'll say it again right now . The college coaching fraternity is the sports worlds worst level of coaching to over analyze it's players abilities or in laymans terms they over coach . They can think themselves into trouble many more times instead of just giving an athlete an opportunity to play their way on or off the field or court .

Newton still injured, Smith to remain the starter.
Phillips said Newton will be available to finish Saturday’s game in an emergency situation but not for extended playing time because he’s still having trouble pushing off his sprained right ankle.

Vandy spent more on football last season than Kentucky
Blue 2: Number of games the University of Kentucky leads Vanderbilt in their overall series. With Saturday's loss, UK now leads the overall series 41-39-4. Is it surprising? Isn’t UK a much bigger sports school with far more resources?
Sure. But consider this. In U.S. Department of Education data released last week, UK spent $14.4 million on football last season. Vanderbilt? $16.5 million.
Are you surprised? I'm not.
- Updated Top 25 (and one) - Vanderbilt drops a long way.

Calipari doesn't know if Kentucky is ready to play Kansas.
Ready or not, it's time to find out. Kansas and UK have both played and easily defeated very weak teams. This one is a crap shoot. -

Very excited about tomorrow's game
I will of course be in attendance, but looking at my tickets, it appears I might be in the Kansas section. Boo.
Although I’m sure we will outnumber true Kansas fans, I do feel the crowd will be anti-UK – given that Duke plays beforehand, and you can’t swing a cat in this city without hitting a Duke grad, I assume they will all be rooting against UK. But we’ll come strong. . .
I'm gonna go out on a limb here...
UK beats KU tomorrow by 20 :). Its very possible if we play our BEST bball.

I too am very happy that college basketball is back
Looking forward to the Kansas game tomorrow – should be a lot of fun!
1/x doesn't die, it just fades away.

Calipari tweet:
Heard that @DickieV said this was the most talented UK team he’s seen in 30 yrs. That’s just @DickieV being @DickieV.

Will anyone even say anything about our game tomorrow?
Remember, its more than likely that we will be playing Kansas less than 30 minutes after Coach K becomes the winningest coach in major college basketball history. I’m afraid all the coverage will be about K and not about any of the four elite teams on the floor.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
that's ok.....lets fly under the radar this week.....
We dont have another test until December after Kansas….. Give the guys time to get their sea legs all the way under them.
It plays right into Calipari’s strategy he loves so well.

Oh, they'll mention our game!
If nothing else they’ll have something about the fans – You forget how many BBN members will be there booing Duke and Krzyzewski as he gets the award for most wins – especially as they’ll have spent the day at Jack Demsey’s before going to the game. If they’re smart, that award ceremony will be private. :-p
Also... Is Kansas still ahead of North Carolina on the all time wins list?
I know they passed them up a couple years ago on the way to 2000.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
Through the end of last season (wins, losses, %):
1. Kentucky (2052, 647, .760)
2. Kansas (2038, 799, .718)
3. North Carolina (2033, 729, .736)
I’d like a little more distance between us and second place. Tomorrow’s a start.
Of all the things I fault Billy Clyde for, ...
the damage he did to our all time wins lead is number two on my list!
(#1 is ending our continuous NCAA Tournament string since probation.)
I just realized that we get DUKE in this tourny next year!!
Bring it on!!! 2012

Yes, we do.
That’s going to be a road trip that I’ll try to make. Along with about a million other people. :-)

Bring on Kansas!
I’m excited about the BIG game tomorrow night. Also glad that we are playing a meaningful game at the start of the season. It should show Coach Cal where we’re at, and what to work on before the N. Carolina game…GO CATS!!!

Bball and Football (Both types)
Vandy lost to Cleveland State. Shocked. Shocked. Not. There is soft and then there is Vandy soft.
Love the Joker story, but we should go for Jim Tressel. Getting him would solve the spending gap I’m sure. As if that is the problem. I’ve always found it is who is doing the spending.
UK women lost Saturday in a shootout. Shootout losses are so painful. Nothing in sports is more intensely agonizing than watching your team in a shootout that will end a team’s season.

Spending Gap?
Guys, that ‘Spending Gap’ is very deceiving.
Vanderbilt Spending ($16.5 million) – Kentucky Spending ($14.4 million) = So-Called Spending Gap ($2.1 million)
First, it reflects the tuition difference and other non-real expenses between the schools:
Vanderbilt tuition ($40,200) – Kentucky tuition ($7,214) = $32,986
Multiply that tuition difference by 85 football scholarships: $32,986 × 85 = $2,803,810 > $2.1 Spending Gap.
Merely adjusting for tuition difference more than offsets the amount of the so-called Spending Gap
Second: Room and board is more, fees are more, et cetera at Vandy.
Bottomline: Kentucky spends more on the football team in real terms than Vandy.
Now, that may not make us feel any better about our program but at least we shouldn’t be making visceral responses to a couple of numbers without thinking about it a little more.

3 goggles
If we shoot the 3 well, they won’t be able to stop us. If. However, I do think it will most likely be a close game.
I don't think it will be close...
Not to be over-confident (hey, I’m not a player, so it’s OK) but if we play 100%, we will win, by a lot.

CBSS and Hoopsworld look at the freshmen
Looks like UK got the right ones. Or is it Cal’s system that allow them to shine? Future recruits, take notice!
