Big Blue Nation Linkapalooza: All About The Madness Edition
Today's Linkapalooza is all about the reviews of Big Blue Madness, some stuff about other "Madnesses," and a bit about conference realignment.
-
Eric Lindsay writes about the freshmen at Big Blue Madness.
"I was nervous at first, seeing 24,000 people out there," said Anthony Davis, who is widely regarded as the top freshman in the nation. "I didn’t know what to do. My first shot, I missed an easy layup."
-
Guy Ramsey writes about the top five moments at Big Blue Madness.
Matthew Mitchell didn't do a tongue-wagging dunk like that MJ, but he did break out a white glove a la Michael Jackson.
-

I liked this part:
We do more than move the needle, we are the needle. ... We Are UK.
-
Kyle Tucker writes about Big Blue Madness.
It was a showman’s speech on a night that was one big, glitzy production meant to fire up the fans and entice recruits. There were several of the latter — all heavily sought from coast to coast — in attendance Friday.
-
Dana O'Neil writes about Madness.
Welcome to Big Blue Madness, an idol-worshiping of teenagers that would make Justin Bieber jealous. There was a countdown clock, pyrotechnics, dancing, locked-out NBA stars, spotlights, and even a little basketball tossed in.
-
James Pennington quantifies Big Blue madness with at dB meter.
The loudest sequence of the night was the introduction of a group of UK alumni now in the NBA, and the loudest single moment came from within that sequence when John Wall was introduced. Wall’s introduction spiked the meter at 110.1 decibels.
- Anthony Wireman has video of a couple of Madness moments.
- Clay Jackson has several nice photos of Madness.
- True Blue Kentucky says Teague is ready to work.
- USA Today says Big Blue Madness was extravagant.
-
Midnight madness around the NCAA.
Coach John Calipari made it clear what this season's goal is by saying it's time to turn the page from anticipation to preparation.
-
Mike DeCourcy says that Calipari has the parts. The question is how to arrange them.
Kentucky’s Big Blue Madness celebration Friday evening was as much a rock show as a basketball exhibition, as much a political convention as an athletic event.
There were enough flashing lights to give an eggplant a migraine. The pulsating music might have broken windows in Frankfort. And it was punctuated by a 10-minute speech from UK coach John Calipari, a figure so polarizing he ought to have his own show on the Fox News channel. -

Stallings sent 3,500 fans at Memorial Gymnasium into pandemonium when he made a half-court shot from behind his back — on the first try.
3500? Really?

Andy Katz writes that the Big East has invited 5 schools to join.
If all goes according to plan, the Big East will end up replacing outgoing Pittsburgh, Syracuse and TCU with full-time members Houston, Southern Methodist and Central Florida, while adding Air Force and Boise State in football only.

ESPN Reports that Boise St. not jumping at the chance to join the Big East

The letter of the law is deceptive. Per Big 12 bylaws, schools must give two year’s notice to leave the conference. If Missouri alerts the Big 12 between six months and one year before leaving, 90 percent of its conference television revenue over a two-year period would be withheld. MU expects to earn about $13 million this year, which would mean a projected $23.4 million penalty.
But one former sports agent compared the conference contract to the astronomical room prices posted on the inside of hotel doors.
"No one ever pays that amount," said Robert Boland, who teaches sports business at New York University.

I believe that UK is going to put a hurting on KU...
KU losing three of it’s freshman can’t help. But eitherway, I think UK wins by double digits.
Agreed
I sympathize with Braeden Anderson’s trouble with his move to the USA from Canada. I’m also pleased that the NCAA will let the other 2 freshmen play next year. It’s the rare offense that should be met with a permanent bar from collegiate hoops. Going to school for a year w/o being allowed to play is more than enough punishment for these kinds of academic misdeeds. I want to be able to watch as many talented basketball players as possible, even if they play for KU (a school for which I bear a somewhat irrational hatred).
The game on 11/15, however, could be a total drubbing. It’s entirely possible that our freshmen haven’t figured out how to play by game 2, but even in that case our returners should lead us to victory. If the freshmen know even half of what they’re supposed to UK will win by 15. KU’s best player is Thomas Robinson, and he’s very good, but the most I’ve seen him listed at is 237 lbs. Terrence weighs 252 lbs and looks strong, plus KU doesn’t have another post to prevent Anthony Davis from floating over to meet Robinson at the rim should he get past Jones. Tyshawn Taylor will be better than Marquis Teague at that point in the season, but if Teague can’t cut it, Taylor will be guarded by Lamb or quality bigger defenders like Miller and Mike Gillie.
It’s great to have a serious opponent this early in the season. Long live the Champions Classic!
Not to take the others lightly, but I thought KU would be our first real competition .....
I at least hoped we would be somewhat challenged before the UNC game … thanks for the rundown on KU
If we're undefeated come SEC time I really believe this team with all the strengths they have could run the table
Last season we were erratic offensively, some nights we were a little off or someone got into foul trouble and had to sit. We have way too much depth and way more quality shooters for this to impact us. I’m extremely optimistic with the chances this team has to be very memorable and getting that coveted number 8.
A man is nothing more than a summation of his scars!
UNC will be a tough out ... once we hit the SEC schedule the game at Vandy will be a tough one too
This team has loads of offensive weapons and capabilities …. how far they go will depend on how well they can defend ….
AMEN!! Depth with the 2011/2012 team is a welcome sight...
I am aware Beckham is not eligible until SEC play. Has anyone seen Beckham play in person? Strengths and Weaknesses?

I gotta assume he’s a decent long range shooter

No, he's a poor 3-point shooter.
He’s a good distributor and a strong body.

A most interesting tweet
“Big Blue Nation was wild tonight. I love the fan support this year. Kentucky is about to be a problem,” Muhammad wrote on Twitter.
"
This does not sound like a problem for UK.
I woke up feeling BLUE this morning. It's gonna be a great day.
Like the sound-
Of this tweet from Muhammad. I hope the Big Blue Nation left an unforgettable impression on this young man. He would look really good in Blue and White… Certainly having Mr. Rondo and John Wall in the house had to help get everyone fired up…
