John Calipari: Balancing championship desires with the need to do what's best for the players
Over at CoachCal.com, I write about UK coach John Calipari's balancing act of striving for championships, while at the same time doing what's best for his players. Lots of great quotes from Cal, as well as Darius Miller, Terrence Jones, and Anthony Davis. Go here for the story.
Also, over at Wildcat Blue Nation, owner/operator Paul Jordan has asked some of his fellow bloggers to share our favorite UK basketball memory. Talk about fun to write ... to read my favorite Kentucky basketball experience, go here.

I appreciate your story Ken
It’s nice to read an article about the Cats written by someone who does not have a hidden agenda to tear them down (purely a reference to the “mainstream” media).
As to the favorite moment, I don’t have the facination with the SuffoCats that many on here do. I suppose it’s because there are so many memories when one is older — of course, the three NCAA titles during my fandom (one of which I attended), the 1975 payback to undefeated Indiana, the 1992 overachievement, the meltdown in Seattle, the Runts.
Thanks for your kind words, jdog
Memories – So many to choose from, it’s ridiculous, in a really great way. The Unforgettables as a whole, what they accomplished, is definitely one of the great achievements in UK history.
I am jealous of you having attended an NCAA title FF. Someday ….
Good article, Ken...
Darius Miller’s playing time will be a huge test for this year’s team. I think we’ve seen it through the years; it’s easy to get down on Miller because he often seems to get into a funk and playing without confidence. With the young pups Wiltjer and Kidd-Gilchrist nipping on his heels for playing time, it’d be very easy for him to lose minutes quickly. But, he’s been in the system for three years and provides experience and “clutch-itude” for a young team that doesn’t have a lot of track record in either. Like I said, huge test…
I agree, wholeheartedly
But, I’ll say this, I think Miller comes through big-time for this team, both as a leader on and off the floor.
I Have 2 Favorites That Stand Out In My Front Brain
The 1975 W over IU in Dayton (NCAA Regional) that put UK back into the FF and brought us into the 20th Century (an integrated team). The bus ride back to Lexington was quite a trip.
That IU team is the best college team I ever saw in person. I met John Laskowski (6th man) this summer and told him the same thing. They clobbered UK earlier that season and the Cats turned the tables. (I never saw UCLA late 60’s or early 70’s nor 1978 UK in person)
And the second is the huge W over Duke in St Petersburg (NCAA Regional) in 1998. UK doesn’t beat Duke very often (lately) but rallied feverishly to do so that day. The 98 Cats were probably not as talented as some other UK teams but none ever had more heart.
