Kanter or Jorts?

A post by Jleverenz caused me to ask this question.  Voting closes 10/27.

For me it is not a tough call.  Of course your choice doesn't matter, but asking yourself this question causes one to exame, What is important?  Why do I love sport?  Do I believe that teammates matter or am I just interested in some sort of vicarious glory?

Deep dark stuff for such a beautiful day here in Colorado.  See you at Keeneland in a week or so.

Poll
Looking back, would you have prefered to win an 8th NCAA with Kanter or reach the semis with Jorts and seeing his development?

Tough call.

I had to think about it a while. But the ultimate goal of UK is a championship, and player development, while important, has got to be secondary.

Nonetheless, it was a wonderful consolation prize.

I voted Jorts.

Seeing him step up his game was more fun for me.

I voted for the 8th.

Not really solely because I value championships above all else. I mean, yeah, I really do like to win, winning is more fun, of course, but I also do think the journey and the memories are important, but no, I voted for an 8th because this particular year, when we were so very close, I was there. I was at the Final Four and to see my team win an 8th would have been a really good story and memory for me personally.

Not just about #8

Remember that Kanter was a great human interest story as well. He, by all accounts, sacrificed a good bit of money and glory for himself and his country to get to play for us, although the dream was dashed. Fortunately, we can’t undo anything that’s been done, so we don’t have the ability to take away Josh’s remarkable story, but if we did have the power and didn’t do it, we’d be partially responsible for costing Kanter the chance to fulfill his dream of playing college basketball, too. If those two conflicting interests are a wash, then I take the championship! LOL

As it stands, BBN loves both guys, and all is well.

Nothing compares to winning a National Championship...

so it HAS to be winning number 8

Jorts

Championships are nice, I won’t argue with anyone who goes that route. But I love the out-of-nowhere stories like Josh. It brings the depth and color to basketball that make the sport so much fun to follow. UK has 7 titles so far, but there’s only 1 Josh Harrellson.

Had to go for #8

because in the end that is a team accomplishment and the team must come ahead of individuals. One of the remarkable accomplishments of Coach Cal is that he demonstrates his player first approach all of the time, yet somehow blends it into a team concept despite all of the egos. There are a few exceptions of course but that is quite normal and his disgruntled players don’t leave for another team, they leave for the NBA.

I woke up feeling BLUE this morning. It's gonna be a great day.

Went for #8

Love Jorts, Love the story, and I have to think he brought a sort of National good Karma that you need to go deep in the tourney. However, If Kanter plays and we get #8 last year, we’re looking at the possibility of back-to-back, which would knock off one more thing Duke has over us, and be flat out awesome. Can you imagine talking about repeating and going for #9 this year?

My guess is if this question were asked before the season...

not very many people would have “preferred” what is essentially a feel-good story in Jorts over a national championship. UK basketball isn’t in this for feel good stories. Not that it has to be a national championships either but no one can tell me they would prefer the feel good story angle over a NC.

Odd how many people are voting for a hypothetical

Josh is not. We saw it. It happened.
If Enes had been allowed to play, he could have had a season ending injury right before the SEC tourney and Josh probably wouldn’t have had enough experience to develop as he did. OR if the NCAA had cleared him, they COULD have said, “We’re sorry UK, but we were wrong. His games won’t count”.
I’m still sticking with actual history. ;-)

Poll is biased

Of course UK fans want the 8th banner. Re-ask the questions, as Jorts and 8 or Kanter and 8 and the result may be different.

I am still partial

to the Wall & Boogie season, from beginning to end.

Last year closed with some EPIC wins over Ohio State and North Carolina, but the entire season wasn’t necessarily a thrill ride.

The question that would be hardest for me to answer would be: the beginning-to-end ride that the Wall & Big Cuz group gave us, or a season with some lulls that ends in a championship. (Sort of like how UConn did it last year.)

I can seriously say that the difference between “7” and “8” is to me not as great as the difference between Wall-Cousins-Bledsoe and no Wall-Cousins-Bledsoe. I spent half of that season on the edge of my seat.

Looking forward to another one this year!

Ooh, that's a good question too

I don’t know which way I would go with that. On the one hand, The 2010 team had a gaudy record, but they played a lot of really close games that could easily have gone the other way (Stanford in particular). Truth be told, they didn’t really dominate teams in-game the way you might expect a collection of talent like that to do so.

On the other hand, they DID win those games and at the end that’s what you remember most. The 2011 team found themselves in many of the same situations, especially in conference play but they weren’t able to make enough plays to win. But those wins over OSU and UNC in the tournament were epic and have to be some of the best tournament wins in program history, and in the Top 5 if you omit title games.

I just can't imagine UK basketball anymore

without Wall and Cousins being a part of it. Championship or not.

Those guys are staying so involved and are gifts that just keep giving for the program. Wall, in particular, is already the biggest national “star” that the program has ever produced. (No disrespect to Dan or Tayshaun and Rajon who were key players on championship teams.)

If championships were the result of multi-game playoff series like in the NBA, I might swing more towards the titles. But every one of us knows the “luck” factor needed for a single elimination tournament, so I guess that is part of the reason I do not consider them as the “be all and end all”.
