Former LSU coach Dale Brown Returns to Rupp
Former LSU head man Dale Brown is returning to Rupp Arena with the Tigers on Saturday. Go here, to CoachCal.com, to read how I've come to terms with my (bad) feelings regarding Brown and the myriad of upsets his team pulled over the 'Cats.

Oh… wait… you mean THAT Dale Brown?!!? Yeah. I don’t like ’im either.
;-)
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
I am going to try my best to get an interview with him tomorrow.....
like him, hate him, or love him, he was never boring……..!!!

Dale Brown was a heck of a showman
.
I always liked him. When I was a student I wrote to him one time wishing his team good luck the next time they visited Rupp. The next time they played here I actually got a phone call at my house from Brown inviting me to come out to their practice the next morning. I went and met him, and he was very gracious with his time.
Sometimes a little “looney” isn’t such a bad thing. The college basketball landscape is certainly a shade or two duller without him in it.
Plus, he had the NCAA figured out a long time ago.
Welcome back to Lexington, coach… you’re one of the best!

He did have the NCAA figured out
and my favorite Dale Brown memory is when he looked them in the eye and they blinked. One of his players had a close family member die and had no way to get home for the funeral. Dale publicly paid for the player’s plane ticket and basically dared the NCAA to come and get him. They did not, and I became a Dale Brown fan instantly and forever. He can win more hearts this weekend if he makes some public comments trashing the NCAA over the Kanter debacle.
I woke up feeling BLUE this morning. It's gonna be a great day.
I remember that and was proud of what Dale did and I know it wasn't for the pub
A man is nothing more than a summation of his scars!
What I will always remember most
When Pitino told his players after being 31 down that if they didn’t shoot the open three he was taking them out of the game…!
The largest comeback in NCAA college basketball history occurred on February 16, 1994, when the University of Kentucky Wildcats overcame a 31 point deficit to defeat the Louisiana State University Tigers 99-95. LSU led 68-37 with 16 minutes left in the game and Kentucky wound up winning in regulation 99-95.
A man is nothing more than a summation of his scars!
Until I posted this I hadn't realized that we scored 62 points in that 16 minute run in the second half

I remember that game!!!
until the cats mounted their comeback it was just awful to watch. I could’t believe it down that many points & come all the way back to win it. other teams might have come back to tie but most would be just dead tired and then go on to lose. but not the greatest team come back in UK. I still have that game on tape. watch it every once in a while. it was out on video sometime back & you could buy it. don’t know if you can now. somebody might know. would like to own it on DVD format
I have that game-
Recorded on vhs tape! A real classic…
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
it was a fun game to watch
I would love to have it on tape or DVD…..if anyone runs across it , let me know
you can buy it at ukathletics.com
click on team shop. then click on collectables. “The Mardi Gras Miracle” DVD cost is $14.95. complete game. no comericals.
Comeback
I loved watching DB’s face on TV as he watched us come back. Priceless.

Dale "Y" Brown,
any relation to John Y. Brown? :)))
I woke up feeling BLUE this morning. It's gonna be a great day.
That guy!
I guess with time my attitude towards Dale Brown has mellowed, but man was he a pain in the butt for UK fans. No doubt, UK enemy number one. I’ll never forget when Rudy Macklin and Dewayne Scales whipped on us. They were taunting the fans the way the Florida teams with Horford and Noah would. It was never easy against his teams.
"UK enemy number one"... Nice way to say that! :-)
I think the best compliment you could ever give a coach is that when you know your team has his completely out-manned, but you say, “Yeah, I know, but you never know what Coach Brown is bringing to the table…” Stall tactics, junk defenses, you just never knew what he was going to do?
In reverse order, my Top 3 UK Enemies:
3) Denny Crum – Just can’t get past the hair-do!
2) Ray Mears – His teams always played the Cats tough…
1) The Ernie and Bernie Show – ’Nuff said! :-)
If your wings don't sweep....
"If you're looking for a helping hand...
.
look at at the end of your damn arm!" – Dale Brown
This is an entertaining 4 minutes of video…
The video is worth the time to watch. The little bit about the NCAA starts at about 3:30, in typical Brown fashion, with a quote from Saint Augustine.

correct me if i'm wrong
but wasn’t it dale brown that thought players should be compensated during tournament play.
After all the ncaa makes a ton of money off them.
Great article Ken-
I remember Dale Brown and what a motivator he was. He could get more out of less talent then anyone. He was sort of from the same mold as Bruce Pearl. He was a guy you loved to hate.I remember watching lots of great UK-LSU battles against him. My wife and I were at a Vandy game in Nashville once, and walked right behind the UK bench on the way to our seats. My wife yelled GO CATS, and Rick Pitino looked right at us. I yelled BEAT LSU, and Ricky P. looked right at me like he understood… And I’ll never forget the year we beat LSU 3 times during the season, and they knocked us off in the regional finals…
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
Thanks a lost, iam4
Thanks for sharing the cool story about you & your wife and RP.
I really have come to appreciate Brown more and more as a head coach. He sold the daylights out of the program when he took over in the early ’70’s, kind of like the bb version of Bill Veeck.
And yes, I agree completely about the comparison between Pearl and Brown, although, I think Brown is a much better person than Pearl. But, as it relates to bb, they definitely have some similarities.
Dale Brown
Thorn in UK’s side back in 1970’s and 80’s for sure.
He recruited a player named Nate Williams to Utah State in 1968. Nate is the father of my stepdaughter. Dale Brown still calls him every year on his birthday and Christmas.
There’s usually more to a man (or woman) than the public image.

1992 SEC Tourney
LSU vs. UT. O’Neal and a UT player get into a fight. Dale rushes onto the court, like he is gonna get between these two big men. He actually pushed the UT player. O’Neal is ejected, UT wins the game. Next day, UK beats UT for the SEC Tourney title. Thanks Dale.
1992 SEC Tourney
That’s partially correct. O’Neal was being harrassed all game and nothing was being called. Late in the game, he went up to slam the ball and a UT player grabbed him from behind and pulled him away from the basket. Out of frustration, O’Neal took a swing at him. O’Neal was ejected, but LSU won the game. He had to sit out the final vs UK, and LSU lost.
