Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

UK Sports And Beyond

There are some very interesting headlines today that are mostly , Non-UK related, but very worthy of discussion. And since we are the most well-rounded of fans, I thought these might make for some interesting comments.

Star-divide

Reggie Bush about to lose a Heisman? You mean to tell me that someone is going to lose something other than USC in that debacle? Well, well. It's about time.

Boise State could play their way into a Championship game this year after their win against Virginia Tech? I know some of you have some strong feelings on this one.And if it wasn't enough they want to be tops in ffotball, now they are going after basketball too??

Ole Miss just couldn't contain Jacksonville State University. I think Tru's term for this is Schadenfreude.....???

Which head coach would you rather be this week, Urban Meyer or Derek Dooley?

Chane Behanan, Deuce Bello, Quicy Miller, and Co. VS. Our Guys.......tell me that is not going to be a show that TV is gonna love. Yeah I know Bello and Miller havent committed yet....

Play with it.....

Behanan, Bello, Miller (Et Al) Only Have One Problem

Pitino will be their coach. He’s 220-85 (72%) at Louisville. A pathetic shell of his 1990’s self.

UK recruits have Calipari as their coach. And Cal >>>>>>> Pitino as a coach.

Numbers

Calipari is 287-72 (80%) since returning to college coaching from NBA.

He is 17-7 (71%) in NCAA games. Pitino is 12-7 (63%) in NCAA games at Louisville.

Numbers .... past indicators are not always predictors of future outcomes

When you twist the numbers enough you can almost prove that 1+1=3 …. Guy is one of the top 10 active coaches, has coached for over 30 years, He was 219-50 at Kentucky, and why is it you only want to consider his NCAA record at UL? “…since returning to college coaching from the NBA” don;t forget to add in “while standing on his left foot in his underwear on Tuesdays” …. just as irrelevant. Maybe he just has the UL Flu.

Do I like Pitino? Not really. Do I like what he did in his personal life? No. Despicable. Do I respect him as a coach? Yes. As basketball fan, I have to.

Balderdash

Pitino recruited quite well throughout the 2000’s at Louisville.

He just hasn’t COACHED very well there. Over the hill, I think.

by FortyYearCatFan on Sep 7, 2010 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Some Coach Do (K At Duke, For Example)

Or Wooden at UCLA.

But not Pitino. His 15 seconds of fame in basketball were in the 1990’s.

His 15 seconds were famous for something else at Louisville.

by FortyYearCatFan on Sep 7, 2010 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I Wouldn't Want To Be On The Same Side Of Any Debate With Matt Jones

Pitino’s numbers in 2000’s at Louisville are <<< 1990’s at UK.

72% vis-a-vis 81% overall. 63% vis-a-vis 81% in NCAA games.

by FortyYearCatFan on Sep 7, 2010 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

But The Stark Fact Remains

Pitino is nowhere near as good as he was. Not at winning. Not at producing NBA players.

by FortyYearCatFan on Sep 7, 2010 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

This thing between he and Cal is just getting started. Everyone saw what Cal did last year.

The bar is now set……now we see what happens next.

I Know What Happens Next

Calipari >>> Pitino as a coach.

He wins 3 of 4, maybe 4 of 5 they play against each other.

by FortyYearCatFan on Sep 7, 2010 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I sincerely hope so, but that does not mean he wont be getting better recruits because of the level

of recruits Calipari is bringing in.

His Recruiting Is No Different Than It Was Before Calipari

He signed plenty of excellent recruits at Louisville.

He just hasn’t coached them very well most years.

by FortyYearCatFan on Sep 7, 2010 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you kidding me?

He brought on a freakin shoe agent. He might not have changed his coaching style, but his recruiting has drastically changed. Pitino would never have wanted anyone to share in the credit of bringing in talent other than himself (or lil rickey).

by UKlvrBM on Sep 8, 2010 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

No Different, Really

He recruited a class in 2004 nearly as good as UK (#1 class that year).

But they opted to go straight to NBA instead.

It's called fire in your belly.

Gone after embarassment in Boston, brother in laws death on 9/11, big contract, multiple homes. I understand it totally.

by Grasslands1 on Sep 7, 2010 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

It could motivate him for a while.

But if he is burnt out then he will not reach the glory land again. It is a different day than when Denny Crum was doing his thing in Louisville. They are little brother to UK in this state and they always will be. Now the 15 seconds of shame has cost him any chance at another high quality program in College or the Pros.

by Grasslands1 on Sep 7, 2010 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Not At U Of L, He Isn't

He is no longer the coach he was in the 1990’s nor even close.

His UK days are long ago. His Louisville record is pertinent today.

Even Tubby Smith has won 5 of 7 against Pitino at Louisville.

by FortyYearCatFan on Sep 7, 2010 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

you cannot recruit top talent unless they are going to have a showcase for all to see these days.

Recruits see UK and they know that UK-UL comparisons are going to be inevitable as well as national TV. Calipari is bringing in better recruits for Pitino.

Louisville Has Always Landed Some Very Fine Recruits

Whether Crum or Pitino, didn’t matter.

Crum is >>> coach than Pitino, no doubt.

by FortyYearCatFan on Sep 7, 2010 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

And Crum was going up against UK in the 70's and Joe Hall. Better players for Kentucky, better players for Louisville

you are making my point for me.

by Greg Alan Edwards on Sep 7, 2010 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Crum Coached From 1972 Through 2001

I would have thought you would know that.

UK signed BLACK players (finally) in the 1970 thanks to Hall, not Crum.

Louisville was a very fine team in 1940’s, 1950’s, and 1960’s also.

Again you should know that. NAIB champs in 1948 over Wooden. NIT champs in 1956. Strong MVC teams with Unseld and Beard in the 60’s.

by FortyYearCatFan on Sep 7, 2010 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Again you are making my point for me. Hall made UK better, so Crum got better players at Louisville than

they were getting prior to that. Different coaches, same effect. Maybe not to the extreme that Cal is taking it, but the same effect. And I did know when Crum coached, but his heyday was in his first 15 or so years coaching when he was competing for players with Hall. His last 15 years were not quite as successful.

Please, Not Even CLOSE To Accurate

Crum was signing very talented recruits at Louisville before Hall even became UK coach.

BSU/VT Observation/Question

I’ve been waiting for Paris Guy to make similar comments. Appears isn’t to happen, so — the level of athleticism for Hokies and Broncos was considerably higher than that of UK and UL which provides evidence how far Phillips and Cats have to proceed in order to be in the national conversation. It also poses the question: Why is that Boise State in a non-BCS conference and in a state with considerable demographic deterrents can perennially put championship material in uniform? The first answer would seem to be emphasis but surely there are other factors.

"People unfit for freedom -- who cannot do much with it -- are hungry for power. The desire for freedom is an attribute of a 'have' type of self. It says: leave me alone and I shall grow, learn, and realize my capacities. The desire for power is basically an attribute of a 'have not' type of self." — Eric Hoffer

by Wild Weasel on Sep 7, 2010 6:53 PM EDT reply actions

Well, I really thought he would jump all over this too, but I wonder what some others have to say now that Boise is

securely inside the top 10 with no remaining major obstacles to an undefeated season. And I was really impressed with the fact that they had VT come all the way back and then they shut the door on them. I expected them to fall apart. They did not. Boise is real and so is that coach.Anyone can call it what they like, but they have done what most people thought they could not.

One good win does not make a

National Champion. If Boise goes undefeated and no other two teams are dominant, then I am for them to play for all of the marbles. I believe that game would end all discussion about how good Boise St. is. It will be like Cincinnati playing Florida last year.

goes undefeated with our schedule, I will be impressed.

So Pete Thamel is officially stalking Calipari now

I refuse to link to his article, but he is saying Kanter got paid $100,000 in Turkey

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, is just a freight train coming your way...

that's silly.

$100,000? Really? My goodness.

First of all, Kanter doesn’t need the money as he comes from a wealthy family and second, that isn’t even close to what he was being offered by the Turkish team. Why would he come to UK for a measly $100,000? Silly.

by BigSkyCat on Sep 7, 2010 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

No, he is saying the Turkish team paid Kanter 100K

Although there hasn’t, as of yet, been any documentation to prove it. The Turkish team wants him to be inelligible for him to play another year for them.

Thamel claims he interviewed the GM of the Turkish team. And has quotes.

If this is legit then Kanter is a no go for us. I cannot believe that a competent GM of any basketball club would make those kinds of statements without providing proof and he says they gave the proof to the NCAA. I would say at best we have ourselves another Reynardo Sydney situation here if this proves out to be true.

Thamel's history is shaky enough to not belive everything he says without hard evidence

Ohhh.

I guess I misunderstood your first post.

And, I read the NYT article, and well, it’s pretty interesting and throws a lot out there (some maybe crap, some maybe not), and like GAE mentions (god, that’s seems so weird to me and it looks like something that should be written in Greek fraternity letters, you know? Like SAE, or something?? : )) — but anyway, like he mentions, there is the interview with the Turkish GM as well as the statement that actual documents were given to the NCAA by the Turks, so maybe the piece shouldn’t totally be dismissed as crap, and stalking.

It will be interesting to see how this shakes out, that’s for sure. The curious case of Enes Kanter just got a lot more curious…

by BigSkyCat on Sep 7, 2010 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

and,

to try and segue this back on topic (sorry, GAE) — I think Reggie Bush should lose his Heisman. USC isn’t bowl eligible, which in college football is the whole freakin’ point, after all. To play the season, win as many games as you can and score the best Bowl you can. I don’t feel bad for Bush and besides, I would bet that he doesn’t even really care all that much as the thing was probably just collecting dust on his mantle.

And, about BSU. Great game last night. I was totally rooting for BSU. Judging from their remaining schedule that was posted and talked about last night by Herbstreit and Musberger (Aww, Kirk Herbstreit — so cute) they look to have a pretty easy road to finish the season undefeated and have a great shot to crash the BCS party. I kinda hope they do it.

by BigSkyCat on Sep 7, 2010 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Their schedule is very light from here on out

with one exception. This will still make them come up short for the big game unless all but one of the big time schools take some losses.

I woke up feeling BLUE this morning. It's gonna be a great day.

well, according to many

The NY Times is WORSE than the Enquirer. Oooh, the big nasty New York Times. I know some will probably write this off just because of the source, but on the surface, to me, this looks pretty bad. If anythng’s amiss though, I’d so much rather it come out before he plays for us.

But, is it worth it? For the hits will surely keep on coming.

It is not Cal, that concerns me really. It is the fact that in my years of existence, I have never met a salesperson I fully trusted. But at this point I say, keep selling the great UK brand, Coach. I am thoroughly enjoying the climb back up to the top of the mountain.
