All in all not a bad start.....some major room for improvements....

having to bench 2 starters, 100 yds in penalties….most of which were preventable But Hartline played like a man who either was possessed or his shorts were on fire……

And Cobb and Locke provided the gas…….

Went for 2 and win, gutsy.

Good game

A win is a win. The second half wasn’t pretty, but the Cats got the first downs they needed at the end.

Congrats to Louisville, they played a good second half.

Sloppy game

thanks to the Louisville receivers for dropping so many passes. UK has to clean up the unneccessary penalties.

UK’s defensive coordinators need to figure out a way to start pressuring the QB better. Whenever the UL Qb had time to throw he was money (if the receiver caught the ball). Whenever UK brought pressure he threw bad passes. Blitz, blitz, blitz would be my mantra from here on out.

With all that being said, it is so gratifying to beat the sissybirds in their stadium. Congrats to Joker on his first win. Many more to come I would assume.

sissybirds

Classy.

Cats won fair and square. Talent really proved itself, but it was a boring game on both sides as I stated on CC. However, good win for UK and UofL has some good thing to look forward too. Three years of Kragthorpe will take some time to correct. Ugh.

Fundamentals might help. Awful execution on offense. Too many “my head isn’t in the game”
penalties. Hope they can straighten all this out before they play a real team.

One win against a mediocre team does not a successful year make. I will wait until the Tennessee game is over and form an opinion on the season.

Had to miss Q4...

and tivo ran out. Was the roughing the passer on 4th and forever a good call? who was it on? if legit, that player should start running now and not stop until practice on monday….

by kywineman on Sep 4, 2010 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Not only was it legit...

It was damn near flagrant in my book. Never a real play on the ball as if he thought Froman still had the ball, he actually dropped his shoulder and laid him out.

Both ugly and stupid. So much for the discipline part of Operation: Win.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

It was a legit penalty

But he didn’t try to take him out. He lowered his shoulder, but he didn’t drive into the hit at all. In fact, he pulled back after making contact. It was enough to knock the QB down (b/c he was running and watching the throw) and earn the flag. But it wasn’t a hard “lay him out” hit. Just stupid.

Me too. Went to eat at Mark’s Feed Store. The officiating crew, in my estimation, were ’Homer Pigeons." Awful lot of pro U of L calls.

I disagree

I think it was pretty solid all around.

Kentucky had a lot of stupid/sloppy mistakes. UofL definitely played with more discipline.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

by chirop1 on Sep 5, 2010 11:42 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I disagree..

That is your perogative. It does not excuse sorry officiating. Take away 3 or 4 bad
calls and the outcome would have been worse. The SEC football officiating crews have no more love for UK football than they do for basketball. I’ve listened to or watched this for 62 years and it has never changed and more than likely never will.

There are any number of reasons why they hate UK but I can’t get into that. It’s historical if one will research it.

UK did play a rather sloppy game at times, but in retrospect, they are basically an inexperienced group. On that basis, I’ll cut them some slack.

Historical hate

Just curious, but how do the newer officials learn this historical hate of UK football? Is it in the SEC Officials Curriculum somewhere?

by JackBluto on Sep 7, 2010 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Not pretty at times, but I'll take the win

Hartline played well and Locke and Cobb do what they do. Just clean up the penalities and the kicking game and this team will be fine…Congrats to Joker on his first of hopefully many victories!!

kicking game

kicking and punting part of the kicking game were not bad. it was the coverage and the field goal kicking that needed cleaning up.

I know Mansour is supposed to be a little erratic...

… but if he steady guy is going to miss an extra point and a 25 yd FG, why wait for the guy with the stud leg?

See, no QB controversy here. I want to see a K controversy. Plus, we punted once from the 38 – a 55 yd FG. Mansour kicked 2 of those in HS.

At the height of the Brohm/Bush days...

I honestly thought we’d never again be truly competitive with UofL. Now we’re sitting on four straight wins.

An amazing turnaround. Good start to the year Cats.

Good and Bad

Bad – penalties, soft pass coverage, missed tackles, FG/PAT missed, 11 penalties for 90 yards, Hartline 12.8 yard/completion, pass rush, penalties!, we’re more physical and faster?

Good – balanced attack (236 pass/230 rush), no turnovers, punting, Cobb (20 yd/carry), win for Joker, Locke (over 100 yds), Hartline still knows how to dump to avoid sack, Hartline the Daredevil (moved well), THE WIN

by hoboat33 on Sep 4, 2010 9:15 PM EDT reply actions

Hold up

You can’t criticize a 12.8 yd/comp. That’s solid.

It's summertime - go Reds!

by NYCCats on Sep 5, 2010 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd be very happy with a 12.8 for a season average

but not for this game. A Senior quarterback with an offensive line boasting an average 30# advantage, going against a pedestrian (with the exception of J. Patrick) secondary of a team projected to finish towards the bottom of the Big East should be able to reach 15.0 or better. If he had been popping the quick slants to beat the blitz I could understand it; but then his completion percentage should also be better.

I guess its just that I expected more after all of the quarterback competition. The quotes out of practice were about evolving the quarterback going beyond “managing the team” (although there was a little backpeddling from that stance in the last couple of days). I want something that exceeds solid against this level of competition.

Granted, its a big rivalry game played on the road and emotions are high and the offensive line has not fully gelled but he is an experienced senior and it looks like the receivers are really starting to shine.

by hoboat33 on Sep 5, 2010 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Gonna have to agree with ya 'boat...

WR crew looked really good. And considering their experience level, the O-line looked good too… Agreed, was expecting more out of Hartline! He only threw one long ball, and that was a floater, or as Tru said, “wounded duck”. I will have to say that he did a good job of evading the rush, and actually made a couple of nice plays while moving his feet. Still looks like a “game manager” to me, as opposed to a “game winner”…

Not much else to say, you’ve covered the rest of it in your two previous posts! Nice writeups…

If your wings don't sweep....
