Kentucky @ Louisville: Governor's Cup 2010 Game Preview and Open Game Thread
Kentucky Wildcats at Louisville Cardinals, Sep 4, 2010 3:30 PM EDT
College football kickoff day. It has been a long, hot summer, and it's time for fall sports. That means football, and the first game of the year means Louisville vs. Kentucky. Today, Kentucky goes for their fourth win in a row in the Governor's Cup game, the annual tilt between the two schools that has been going on since its resurgence in 1994. Since that time, Kentucky is 7-9 against the Cardinals, and looks to get one game closer to even in the modern series today at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in Louisville. Both these teams convene today under the leadership of a new head coach, and both teams have a number of new players at important positions.
We'll take a look at what to expect after the jump.
Offense vs. Defense
The Kentucky offense, in theory, should be superior to that of last year despite the loss of John Conner at fullback and several offensive linemen. But Joker Phillips has been extremely pleased by the play of the offensive line in summer camp, and that looks to be the overall strength of this year's Kentucky offense. Of course, Randall Cobb, Chris Matthews and Derrick Locke will have something to say about that, but if Phillips is correct, the holes and the pass blocking should be there.
For Louisville, defensively, there are any number of questions not the least of which is their size on the D-Line. The Louisville defensive line is relatively small and inexperienced, starting a redshirt freshman at defensive end and having very young players as backups. Getting penetration on defense will therefore be a big challenge for the Cardinal line, and with Kentucky expected to be doing a lot of running today, it does not bode well for Louisville.
The Louisville linebacking corps does have quite a bit of experience led by senior Brandon Heath and Andtwon Canady. Louisville has a little more experienced depth at linebacker, but not a lot. The defensive backfield is much like the defensive line -- inexperienced at Division I football, and facing receivers like Cobb and Matthews will be a major challenge for this group.
Offensively, Louisville is bigger on the line and the starters are quite experienced. Quarterback Adam Froman is a dual-threat quarterback that can get yards with his legs as well as his arm, and has the kind of game that could thrive in Charlie Strong's spread offense. The Kentucky defensive front is more experienced and has good speed, which should bode well for defending the Louisville spread when they run it.
Louisville also has two quality backs in Bilal Powell and Victor Anderson, both of whom are capable of ripping off good gains if the O-line can open holes for them. Neither is particularly good as pass receivers, although Powell is serviceable in that role. Louisville lacks the kind of big-play receivers Kentucky has, although Doug Beaumont is the kind of player that can burn you if he gets open. Beaumont is small for a Division I receiver at only 5'9", though.
One of the big question marks for Kentucky is the linebacking corps, although they are quite experienced there starting a sophomore and two seniors. Danny Trevathan was very good last year, and should be even better this year, and Ronnie Snead has quite a bit of experience at the Mike with Qua Huzzie, the rage of the early camp, backing him up.
Randall Burden an Winston Guy lead what should be an excellent defensive secondary, although there have been questions about Guy's consistency in camp. JUCO transfer Mychal Bailey was frequently lauded by Phillips for his play in camp, and the Wildcat secondary is expected to be good this year.
Overall, Kentucky's offense has more weapons than the Cardinals, although not by much. But Randall Cobb, Chris Matthews and Derrick Locke all figure to be in the running for all SEC honors this year, and therefore the advantage goes to Kentucky.
Offensive advantage: Kentucky
Defensively, neither squad stands out, but Kentucky is slightly more talented, more experienced and faster.
Defensive advantage: Kentucky
Special Teams
Ryan Tydlacka will be handling the field goal kicking for Kentucky as freshman wunderkind Joe Mansour looks to find his consistency in that position. Randall Cobb and Derrick Locke, along with Winston Guy, will be handling the kickoff returns, and Cobb will be returning punts just like last year.
Louisville returns junior Chris Philpott at the kicker position, but tries out a new punter in junior transfer Josh Bleser. Johnny Patrick and Victor Anderson handle the kick return duties, and Scott Radcliff will be handling the punt return duties for the Cardinals.
Kentucky has the advantage both kicking and returning the ball with more overall talent.
Overall
Kentucky is favored in this game, and should be, regardless of the venue. PJCS will be an advantage for the homestanding Cardinals, but Kentucky has too much talent at the skill positions and enough talent and experience on the lines to win this football game.
Go 'Cats.

So far ...
… I could not really ask for more from Hartline. He has played extremely well, overall. And the receiving corps is improved.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
Locke and Cobb ...
… have been just what every body expected.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
Yep
Defense has some speed (as expected), are lacking in fundamentals and mental fortitude.
O-line has played great. Turtle is terminating.
Not a bad start at all.
It's summertime - go Reds!
I could ask a bit more from the secondary.
We have given up some pass plays. And that big play on the kick return did not amuse me.

The fundamentals ...
… drive me crazy. Tackling has never been good at UK. It’s like herpes or something, we just can’t seem to cure it.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
OK.....question of the day......
We can now handle Louisville as the first game of the season……5 yrs ago not so
Are we ready to move a Florida game to the last game of the year?
Would there be an advantage to playing Florida that late in the season? Could we build a top 25 resume, win 9-10 games and lose to Florida in last game of the seaosn and still go post new-years bowling?

not so long ago, it would have resulted in a punt too......
nice to see we can now salvage something from a mistake……that is a mark of a really good team

Evidently
Mansour needs to work on his mechanics to get his FGs off quicker. When he gets it down we might be in FG range soon as we cross midfield.
On his mechanics?
Not sure, I’ve read every written word in the nation leading up to the game.
On the “midfield” part? Just kidding.

Anybody complaining about Hartline today needs to learn something about this game.
3 Offensive lineman have never started a game prior to today just for starters. He has played a wonderful game and he is by far the best QB we have right now.
I wasn't really complaining
and everyone knows I am trying to learn everything.
Blue... there is no other color to Bleed !!!
Sorry about the complaining
Old habits are hard to break. I do know a little about football and realize the line needs to keep those guys with the red shirts away from that fellow on our team that has the ball given to him by the big guy in the middle of the line of big guys.
La Rod was wide open for a possible TD.
but I had a better view, I guess.
Blue... there is no other color to Bleed !!!
Not the right call.....1st mistake I have seen Hartline make today.....
wrong safety outlet call there…..had a man open on the other side

Okay...
… this is a fairly big play.
Kentucky gets this stop, I think we win. Not, I think it’s up in the air.
What we cannot do is give up a big play. A first down, okay, that sucks but we can live with it. A big play will take away our biggest ally — the clock.

Would have liked to see more points (of course) but I’ll take it. Plenty to work on the next two weeks before meeting a vulnerable Florida – tackling, coverage, extra points, penalties – the usual.

Win Is A Win, But
Mistakes are disappointing — almost enough to offset athletic superiority.
"People unfit for freedom -- who cannot do much with it -- are hungry for power. The desire for freedom is an attribute of a 'have' type of self. It says: leave me alone and I shall grow, learn, and realize my capacities. The desire for power is basically an attribute of a 'have not' type of self." — Eric Hoffer
