Around SBN: Events Cause Mariners To Lose To Rangers

It's time to say goodbye to Steve Brown.

The defense is not improving year to year. It's clear that we don't have the talent that other top tier SEC programs have, but doesn't part of the blame lay on Brown for that as well because of not getting the job done recruiting. I see everything slowly improving around our wildcat football team except the defense. Brown has had talent on his defense's before which includes a list of players that are currently in the NFL, and he couldn't do very well even with the talent. How many years is Urban Meyer going to embarrass our defense? It's not just Fla that's doing it either; a slue of teams have had great rushing games against us. Our SEC opponents 3rd down conversion rate over the last 5 years is probably through the roof. I think a lot has to do with predictable, non-adaptive, and non aggressive game plans by our DC. I think it may be time for Kentucky to dish our some money and hire a new defensive coordinator.

This is my first ever post here, and it comes out of frustration. I want to know if I'm being to hard on the guy or do you feel the same way? How many of you think Steve gets cut at the end of the season?

I'm not willing to go there yet.

We lost a huge amount from last year, and it’s arguable that this year was always going to be a tough one defensively.

Next year, if we don’t see improvement, I’m likely to agree. But you can’t improve when you replace older, better players with younger, less skilled ones.

The secondary is really bad this year

The loss of Paul Warford is really showing.

Less skilled

Less experienced, I think, is more appropriate.

Tackling is not something that should have to be taught at this level,

but evidently it is going to have to be. We cannot continue to do this bullfighter crap on big backs and receivers. Not to mention a freshman Randall Cobb wannabe that we should have seen coming a mile away. Florida took OUR gameplan and executed it perfectly. And if our defense practices against Randall Cobb, they should have been ready for that kid. Period.

You can't simulate the speed Fla. has in practice,

and although Cobb is quick, he’s not in the same league, speed-wise, with almost the entire Fla. team.

Why do I bring up speed? Because speed can make a would-be tackler look silly, which is what happened Saturday.

Because of all the talent UK lost on

defense, I agree with Glen and give Brown a pass this year. What ever happened to Evans? There is no excuse why we can’t have a good defense the same time we have a good offense. But for some reason we never have them the same time and if we did then maybe we could have a ten win season and a top 25 ranking.

Getting rid of Brown would be nuts

The defense is very young, but there is talent, and it will get better.

I love it when “fans” call for sweeping changes based on a team’s performance against one of the top five or six teams in the country, especially when the unit the “fan” is complaining about is one of the youngest defensive units in college football.

you know how it is Ken.....everyone screams when they get slapped....lol.....

Honestly

I’m getting more than a little restless with Brown. Yes, this year he has a very young defense and lost a lot of talent compared to last year. But I also remember last year – Victor Anderson (Louisville) 110 yards, Tebow/Demps (Fla) 220 yards, Ingram (Ala) 140 yards, Miles (SC) 100 yards, Tate (Auburn) 132 yards, Dixon (MSU) 252 yards, Ealey/King (Ga) 154 yards, Hardesty (TN) 179 yards and Harper/Spiller (Clemson) 146 yards.

Granted this list includes two Heisman winners and the ninth pick of the draft (Spiller), but we knew they were good before the games and still had no way to stop them. Week after week we faced good running backs and still couldn’t find any scheme to slow them down, even with the greater talent in 2009. I damn near threw the TV out the window when Dixon ran for miles at Commonwealth and the defense never, I repeat, NEVER made an adjustment.

Try a 3 4, 3 -3, anything but at least have an alternative when the offense is ripping through you at their discretion. Maybe Joker can out recruit Charlie Strong, get him fired and hire him as our DC. ’)

Not sure why the strike through occurred.

The strikeout ...

… is a “feature” that bites us all.

a “-” with a space on both sides is the opening tag for a strikeout, with a “-” being the closing tag. I run into this “feature” all the time.

3-4, 4-3 is okay. 3[space]-[space]4 will get you a strikeout the next time you type a “-”.

Thank you hoboat for those statistics

I’m not asking for “sweeping changes” Ken. Kentucky has been poor on defense for the last 5 years: failing to be ranked in the top 40 at end of the season any of those years in the points allowed category. Many times I have said the same thing you pointed out “oh they are young, but they will be better next year on defense”. Please don’t question if I’m a fan Ken I assure you I am. Was wanting Billy G to get fired considered “Sweeping changes” as well?

Firing the D Coordinator qalifies as a sweeping change in my book

And you need to check your facts before you make “sweeping” comments like, “Kentucky has been poor on defense for the last 5 years.”

When Brown took over from Mike Archer, the UK defense was ranked right around 110th (and had been for some time) in the nation. Since Brown took over, there has been an incremental improvement in UK’s defensive ranking, reaching as high as the high-40’s, low-50’s. The last five years has seen some of UK’s best defensive teams since Claiborne was coaching.

If you really followed UK football, you would know this. It’s not a secret.

Now, has UK’s defense, over in the last five years, been outstanding? No. But, going from ranked around 110th nationally, to a top-60, top-50 defense, I feel, is a strong accomplishment.

Mr. WW’s comment below mine is the answer to what ails you. But, the hope lies in that this D is young, and talented, and that UK’s recruiting (last year, and so far this year) is the best it has ever been.

The real problem is not UK’s secondary, but rather how out-performed both the defensive and offensive lines were. I thought both lines played pretty well against UofL, WKU, and Akron, but they had their hat handed to them Saturday. The Gators were just bigger, stronger, and faster at every line position.

That’s a recruiting issue, and one I’m sure Joker and staff will address.

by Ken Howlett on Sep 28, 2010 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I wonder

how much the climb from the 110th range to the 50-60 range is attributable to coaching and how much to talent? If it’s overwhelmingly due to talent we obviously need to keep that up but also look at the coaching for that “next step”.

I think a combination of both

Listen, I was against the firing of Archer. He’s a guy who had a very, very successful, long stint in the NFL … it’s not like he forgot how to coach. But, the din was loud and unending from the fans calling for his dismissal. Now, whether that played into Brooks’ decision to fire him, I don’t know.

I’ll say this: Joker, regardless of how good or bad UK’s defense is the rest of the year, may want to make a change, and bring in his “own” guy. That decision will be made much easier if the D struggles, regardless of youth (although Joker is fond of saying that fan unrest is usually a bunch of “noise” because most don’t “have a clue” of what they are talking about: his words, not mine, although I do agree is part). And the irony of that is; that scenario is very similar to the one that got Archer fired – UK’s defense was young (Archer was fired after T. Lindley’s frosh year), but steadily improved under Brown, due in part to the natural progression of competence of young players.

Am I happy with UK’s defense in the Fla. game? Certainly not, it was embarrassing at times. But I think that’s more of a function of youth, the Gator’s incredible team speed, and UK having not faced a team near the talent level of UF’s second string.

Whatever mix of talent vs coaching

got us from the pits to the stratospheric 50 – 60 range, the spotlight is now firmly trained on the defense and its coach (much to the delight of Hartline, I’m sure!). It was interesting to read some of the post game comments from players casting a little warmth in Brown’s direction. Locke – “Dude had six touchdowns; that’s some high school stuff.” and “Their offense was doing the same, same old plays, and it was working. Why it wasn’t getting stopped, I don’t know….” I’m still trying to find the one from one of the defensive players, will post it if I can find it.

UK #36 Yds Allowed/Game

And #75 in Pts allowed/game. I expect both to deteriorate as season progresses due to improved opponents. BTW, Mike Archer at NCS is #39 in Yds allowed and #40 in scoring defense.

With UK’s personnel. I believe “outathleted” is the currently accepted term.

Look out for the LBs next season.

Huzzie and Trevathan, especially.

WW’s answer is 100% correct. With Burton on fire like he was, I’m surprised UF only put up 41 points.

by mrmondaynite on Sep 29, 2010 9:15 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed.

Huz and Trevathan are both very good, and could end up being All-SEC performers.

Don't Forget

In addition to replacing Maxwell, Johnson, Linley, and Peters, the Wildcats lost Warford and Cobble to academics and Matt Lentz to concussions. I’m inclined to believe that UK will improve defensively as the players gain experience and especially as they gain more time operating as a unit. And I honestly believe that the whipping Florida put on the Cats will prove to be the first act in a Florida offensive juggernaut. It will be interesting to see what the Gators do against Bama.
