By releasing the information at 4 pm (CDT), there will be an entire weekend of commentary.

because the report will clear Bledsoe and UK.

I agree. That’s why I said “supposedly” in my comment yesterday. And even then, we don’t know when they will come along and say that they have had to re-open the investigation because the NYT has released new “facts” based on reliable sources.
Recent evidence has uncovered some improprieties. It has been proven that Bledsoe was born. We must check into this.

Tongue in cheek. I think. LOL

Absolutely no end to the nonsense.

That tale regarding the player at Hofstra is the most exasperating recount of NCAA inconsistency that I could imagine. That story is exacting why the NCAA should not be eligibility decider, police, prosecutor, judge, and jury.

The Alabama school board ...

… is in executive session:

From Twitter: “Specifically, the atty for the Board suggested the Report involved confidential school records protected by the federal law FERPA.”

I do not have a good feeling about this situation...

Whether it is my pessimism about the NCAA or the “just our luck” feeling, this has me very nervous.

Even though I do not blame Calipari for this situation, this will be disastrous from a PR point of view. The “I told you so” crowd is waiting to hammer Coach Cal and UK.

My fingers and toes are crossed but still not confident this will turn out positive for UK.

The worst part is who can we blame. Bledsoe? The school or teacher that changed the grade? Coach Cal? Sandy Bell? The answer is probably a combination of several of them, but you know where ALL the blame will go. That is, of course, if it is shown that Bledsoe should have been ineligible.

Slower Traffic Keep Right!

by SevenRings on Sep 24, 2010 5:32 PM EDT reply actions

Relax.

There are many possible outcomes, but the main issue is going to be:

a) Was an improper grade given?
b) If so, why?
c) Bledsoe involved?
d) Should Bledsoe’s transcript be changed?

A lot of those answers could be good, and a lot of the them could be worrisome. But given the current situation, it appears to me that there is bad news for Alabama schools via FERPA.

A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan

by Glenn Logan on Sep 24, 2010 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes there are many possible outcomes

however, as I understand it, the A in algebra III is what allowed Bledsoe to be eligible this past season. If it is shown that grade was changed from a C to an A, wouldn’t that mean that he would have been ineligible? If so, wouldn’t the NCAA have no choice but to vacate all those wins? I am not stating this as fact, just asking cause I don’t know.

Slower Traffic Keep Right!

by SevenRings on Sep 24, 2010 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Well ...

… it all depends.

If the report finds monkey business with nefarious intent, it could matter indeed.

If the report finds a clerical error, or just what it considers a grade that it couldn’t find justification for, it becomes more of a judgment call.

tea leaves

I think the problem is going to turn out to be – how Eric got to his final high school.

The “employee” with problems might turn out to be one of those coaches. You still might not have a “grade change” happening.

Of course, I’m just in prayer at this point myself.

by creature on Sep 24, 2010 5:39 PM EDT reply actions

I think ...

… there may be more issues for the school system to worry about than Bledsoe’s grade.

If they found an employee that released Bledsoe’s transcript without his consent, the litigation that will follow will be beyond their darkest dreams, as well as the potential consequences.

A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan

From Matt Jones Twitter:

No report on Bledsoe yet but initial signs dont look good…meeting into executive session because of potential litigation from report

by EEWildcat on Sep 24, 2010 5:41 PM EDT reply actions

Ferpa

Could just be an excuse to close the session.

Litigation suggests that they are going to allege something and someone may deny and contest the allegation. That does not sound like a teacher to me. The coaches are the ones who have been out front with their own attorneys. Night school math teachers are not so difficult to put the squeeze on.

by creature on Sep 24, 2010 5:41 PM EDT reply actions

Despite Jones' latest tweet ...

… holding UK responsible isn’t really necessary.

If Alabama changes the transcript, an application of strict liability could result in a retroactive declaration of ineligibility, and vacation of wins.

Remember, the NCAA found no fault at all with UMass in the Camby matter. But their Final Four is nonetheless vacated.

A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan

by Glenn Logan on Sep 24, 2010 5:48 PM EDT reply actions

While I'd like to believe the NCAA relies on precedent

the story posted by StillCatwoman above shows they don’t really follow precedent at all . . . at least in foreign player eligibility cases. According to that story, the use of an exhibition game to count against Wall’s suspension last year was the only time that ever happened and they turned down a plea by Hofstra to do it after that.

by jdogblue on Sep 24, 2010 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

That ...

… precedent really isn’t precedent for this case.

My point is that UK’s culpability isn’t required for them to vacate wins.

but there are many in the media that believes that the NCAA was embarrassed somehow about the Reggie Bush situation. I just worry that the climate around the NCAA is to punish and gain back more control.

That may a paranoid view but it is shared by many who are far smarter than me.

Here comes Thamel:

Birmingham News reports that the reasons for former Kentucky star Eric Bledsoe’s grade changes were “not credible.” http://bit.ly/cwOUAZ.

This guy is defending his work, but it looks like he will lose.

Matt sums it up:

So here is the deal…investigation doesnt believe teacher but has no proof of wrongdoing. So school board cant do anything….

Jeff Drummond tweets:

Bledsoe report says reasons for grade change did not seem credible, but school board and superintendent are accepting teacher’s word.

This is an outcome I did not foresee

They’re apparently not going to overturn the grade – but they are going to allow the report to cast aspersions on the reputation of an individual teacher.

That’s really odd. There’s something we’re not seeing. Maybe the teacher was going to sue.

Now Thamel and the rest will be able to continue to slam Kentucky, and the NCAA can just stand there and watch it.

Well, there was no further discussion of rent or improper benefits received from coaches.

Maybe a year from now this teacher buys a new house in Los Angeles.

+1

Maybe the teacher was going to sue.

No matter where you're at, there you are

nonetheless

This puts any possibility of the season being vacated much further away. Just about impossible.

Oh, there’s plenty of ammo for the haters. The judge was a real judge. But the superintendent was a real superintendent, and whatever the journos and gamblers may say, his teachers will know from now on that when they wield the authority of the Birmingham, Alabama schools, their administration HAS THEIR BACK.

Forty. Where are you. We need your assessment on all this insanity. I’m serious man. No more trolling. I know you’re happy too. So, what is your take?

Forty says-

This same type of incident came up in ’62, so it was double jeopardy…

Nothing To Say

I had grade changed in Prob & Stat II from C to A because my prof failed to credit my homework assignments. I kept copies and give them to him. He gave me the A grade.

My first semester 71-72 grade report showed C but my transcript shows A.

Even in the civil and criminal law

…there are cases in which the system can only point to the actual facts – not redress them.

So this outcome seems to hit Eric and the soon-to-be-named teacher, but not Kentucky.

I’m just going to let the whole thing drop. As so often happens – my prayers were answered but part of the answer was No.

But I think our season and UK2K and all that, and the upcoming season, all that is safe, and for the rest of it I just won’t read Gary Parrish for a month or two.

Now if we get Enes cleared everybody will really hate us. Great.

Bittersweet feeling

The primary objective was attained.

But it looks like a teacher did cheat. And this doesn’t make Eric look very good either.

That makes me feel kind of bad. Still: here’s to ya, Eric. Be a good player, and be a good person. If you had to bend a rule or two to get out – it’s not a sin. But the entire Birmingham school system stood up for you as family, right or wrong. So it is on you to do good.

Hear me? You owe them. Do not forget.
