Report: The NCAA is Investigating the Tennessee Basketball Program
Dana O'Neil and Chris Low of ESPN.com are reporting the NCAA is investigating the Tennessee Volunteer men's basketball program. The investigation is reportedly centered around possible "excessive phone calls" and the "use of unauthorized phones to contact recruits." According to the report, the NCAA has already talked with head coach Bruce Pearl, and assistant coach Tony Jones.
Sounds a bit Kelvin Sampson-ish to me.

UPDATE: Tennessee basketball coach Bruce Pearl is being penalized by UT for lying to the NCAA. According to The Tennessean, Pearl "provided false and misleading information to the NCAA when questioned about potential violations."
Some of the self-imposed punishment Tennessee has saddled the basketball program with:
- Financial penalties for Pearl and three of his assistant coaches. Basically, all of the coaches have had their salaries reduced by 25%. In addition, Pearl loses a $500,000 retention bonus.
- No off-campus recruiting for Pearl and all three of his full-time assistants for a period of one year.
- A reduction in official on-campus visits from 12 to 9.
- A reduction of off-campus recruiting opportunities from 130 to 104 (Although, with no coaches allowed on the road to recruit, I don't know who will be able to use the 104 opportunities).

Not Surprising About Pearl
His role in the Deon Thomas recruiting saga 20+ years ago was ultra sleazy.

Ditto, but
I hate for any SEC team to be in trouble with the NCAA. It just adds to the perception than the SEC is full of cheating SOB’s.
Yep
There won’t be any Fighting Illini fans crying over Bruce Pearl getting into hot water. That’s for sure and you’re right, he was ultra sleazy.

All NCAA schools are required to keep DETAILED phone records for every phone issued to an
asst. coach. Only THOSE phones are allowed to be used to contact recruits. Most coaches also turn in records for their own personal cells (if they keep a spare) and for their home phones. Calls to recruits from the university phones are logged.
ANY OTHER PHONE used to contact a recruit is considered unauthorized.
And my daughters think I am nuts because I get a list bill from AT&T…..lol

That was where Samson and his crew got themselves into trouble.
They had one set of phones they used which were monitored by the University. They had others which were not.

Considering how we get up in arms about accusations of paying 200K for recruits...
I suppose I should wait to pass judgment on other schools…
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
Well, in this instance
the NCAA is currently running an investigation into possible cheating at UT. In UK’s case [s], only accusations, by newspapers, have been brought forth. There is of course an NCAA investigation into the eligibility of Kanter, but there has not been a hint of impropiety on the part of Kentucky.
The basketball police
I am just getting really tired of the NCAA. There has got to be a better way to maintain standards and integrity in collegiate sports. Maybe Tennessee is at fault, maybe they are not, but the time, energy, and emotion the NCAA gestapo sucks out of its member schools and their fan bases is out of control.
There is a better way........
but the schools and conferences won’t adopt any real system to police themselves. Look at the inconsistencies in consequences in the SEC alone for various messes players get themselves into.
Reggie Bush is almost retired and they finally
got around to nailing USC when the whole world knew what had happened but they’re ALL OVER Tebow and others wearing “improper” eye black.
The main problem is there seems to be no oversight…..they do whatever they want.
You can't fix "stupid"!
In fairness
The sheer, vast scope of the Bush affair is what took so long. The NCAA had been investigating Bush/USC for about three years. There were literally 100’s of people interviewed for the final findings.
Come on.....
The NCAA is a multibillion dollar industry. If they wanted to get stuff done quick, they would. I can tell you right now that if my wife wanted to investigate my Best Buy and Lowes purchases as of late, I think it would take her about 30 minutes to flipout and start looking at purses online. If they were really interested in regulating the sport, they would do so. The problem is that there is more money in letting things play out, and then punishing people that weren’t even involved in it.
LOL!
Just how is “there more money in letting things play out, and then punishing people that weren’t even involved in it.”
Hey man, I’m not taking up for the NCAA, but your comment seems a bit paranoid to me.
Just cause we're paranoid ...
… doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get us.
But yes, I think the UK fan base paranoia over the NCAA is a little misplaced. I think it is possible that some get favorable treatment when possible (see Maggette), but I don’t think they live to bust UK. But when the media reports stuff, the NCAA is often forced to check it out.
I "think" what my
son is talking about there Ken is letting Bush continue to play and obviously USC continuing to play bowls even after he left. USC is an obvious big tv draw at least on the West Coast anytime they were playing…..probably not so true now.
Not saying that’s necessarily true but…….;-)
You can't fix "stupid"!
I do not know this, but
I don’t think the investigation into Bush started until after he left, but as I say, I could be wrong.
My only point is; I don’t believe the NCAA intentionally waits until the rule breakers are gone before they drop the hammer.
And it’s great to have your son on here. I hope I wasn’t too harsh … didn’t mean to be.

So I’ll see you at the WKU game. :)
My dad pretty much summed it up. I am not paranoid, although I do think UK has the biggest magnifying glass on it that they have had in quite some time.
What I meant is that they are putting their resources into making more money, not policing like they should. If the NCAA does its job, Rose never plays college ball (at least in a decent conference). Where is the money in that? I am not saying the NCAA knowingly allows players in and then burns teams later for it. But I think they could do a better job of not only investigating the infractions and handing out the punishments.
I'm not going to gloat about a rival's dealings with the NCAA

Dang Forty!
You rarely call someone out like that. Especially a coach. I have seen ol boy slobber he was so worked up during a game and I knew his manners weren’t that refined. This lying stuff doesn’t suprise me based on his mannerisms. What has me suprised is your response. I know you are in sweet Chi town and have heard some insidious reports of the sneaky squirrel with the name of Pearl who is not very lovely to gaze upon. I don’t ask for proof nor evidence for he has spilled his big guts like a shark who has been beached and cut for all to see. Do me a favor though, when he has been let go from UT then throw a few tidbits out there that the other pundits don’t dig up from folks wanting to blab about him now that he’s gone and lied to the NCAA. Ultra maroon.
Really, I cannot recall you calling a coach sleazy. This must be serious.

Penalties
$1.5 million salary reduction for Pearl and 25% reductions for assistants. All are banned from off-campus recruiting for periods of time up to one year. These are serious penalties. Pearl can obviously live with his reduction, but a 25% cut for assistants may change their life styles.
Lying is bad, but I am surprised at what the AD and Prez handed out. If these infractions had been in football, would they have only slapped a few hands?
This is a preemptive strike, so to speak.
With the football and baseball team’s both under investigation, and now the basketball program, a lack of institutional control is a finding UT definitely does not want.
Pearl's news conference
This is the quote from Pearl that kills me:
“I learned that it’s not OK to tell the truth most of the time, but you’ve got to tell the truth all of the time.”
Is Bruce Pearl a child? Didn’t we all learn that somewhere around 8 years old? I mean, c’mon, you JUST learned that??
It's summertime - go Reds!
Do these pants make my butt look big?
Mrs. Pearl
How’s that telling the truth theory working for you now, Bruce?
Apparently Pearl turned himself in
He lied to the NCAA about the calls when they were on Campus reviewing the football allegations. He then came clean to UT who self-reported the information to the NCAA. This all started in April.
No matter where you're at, there you are
Yes, UT is claiming Pearl, only days after talking to the NCAA in June went to Hamilton (AD)
and told him he lied to the NCAA. Ones mileage may vary.

Heh
Replace Pearl with Cal and UT with UK in this little drama … and oh my, Lexington would be the home base of ESPN, Fox, CBSSports.com … satellite trucks and anxious reporters would fill the streets. But worst of all, Seth Davis would probably move to Lex … cruel and unusual punishment for the folks in the bluegrass, if you ask me.
Pearl did get solid billing on ESPN, though, but there was no dialogue among the “experts,” whereas, had it been Calipari, everybody from Scott Van Pelt to Jay Bilas would have chimed in with their cheap shots, and gratuitous smack talk.
But of course, if Cal did something like this, he’d deserve everything he got.

You know......
As big a bite as the Tennessee AD took out of Pearl and his assistants, imo Pearl at the very least deserves it and maybe much more!
If you survey some other websites there is a sense of disbelief at the severity of the penalty self-imposed by the University of Tennessee on Pearl for what is dismissively termed, “making too many phone calls.” The individuals who think this are missing the point.
First, anybody who has been hounded by telemarketers flooding your phone with calls knows that “too many phone calls” is no joke. Top basketball recruits receive many hundreds of voice contacts and text messages a day from dozens of coaches and their staffs, any- and everybody who wants to sway the decision of a prospect. In addition to just giving these basketball prodigies a little peace, the NCAA phone call limitations are intended to level the recruiting field by preventing big schools from swamping the recruiting efforts of small schools through overwhelming application of big recruiting budget resources. So, while it isn’t a violation with a dollar $ign attached to it, as a person who values their down time and privacy in the evenings, to me this violation is not such a small deal even had it been inadvertent.
Second, Pearl admits knowing violation of the NCAA rules regarding phone calls. It isn’t a matter of an assistant coach just accidently calling a prospect too many times; Pearl himself apparently enlisted his staff to set up a whole circumvention procedure, a scheme, for switching over to unauthorized phones for contacting recruits when the limit of permissible calls on authorized phones had been reached. This act takes the nature of the infraction (too many phone calls) and boosts it well out of the realm of a secondary ‘oops’ and puts it in the major violation category with multiple actors intentionally breaking NCAA recruiting regs.
Third, Pearl and his assistants compounded their NCAA crime by lying to NCAA investigators who were making inquiries that evolved from their efforts to examine potential infractions by the Tennessee football program. Pearl had a chance to come clean and opted for dissimilitude and concealment of his actions.
Sometime later, Pearl went to his AD, made an admission, plead contrition, and threw himself on the mercy of the University of Tennessee powers that be. At this point, many are apparently tempted to believe this confession shows a mitigating integrity, a strength of character which wasn’t evident before.
However, my understanding is that Pearl didn’t come forward until he had become aware that the NCAA had obtained Kansas basketball recruit Josh Shelby’s phone records as part of their examination of his own eligibility questions. Shelby’s phone records showed unreported calls from Pearl and his assistants from unauthorized phones prior to his commitment to Kansas. Rather than a display of conscience and contrition, this confession was instead an apparent action intended to preempt the NCAA’s revelation of his misdeeds and by doing so gain some small amount of moral high ground from which to plea bargain the consequences down to a level that might allow him to still be viewed with some public semblance of integrity (however small) and keep his multi-million dollar job (however diminished).
So, let’s see, Pearl broke recruiting rules; he intentionally broke those rules on recruiting and enlisted others into his scheme for violating the rules; he contrived a cover-up by lying when questioned about the recruiting violations and caused others to perpetuate the cover-up when they were questioned; and, finally, he only came forward, confessed and displayed contrition when he had been caught by the NCAA to try and save himself to the extent possible from the probable penalties should he wait for the certain revelation by the NCAA of his scheme in the face of his denials.
Yeah, I think he may have gotten off lightly. If you think otherwise, I invite you to share Ken Howlett’s above visualization of what the consequences would likely be should this sports crime have occurred in Lexington, Kentucky with Calipari.
There is no doubt in my mind that
Pearl got off lightly. There are no real penalties for he or his staff here. Money can be made up in other ways. The restrictions hurt them in recruiting, this is true. But if Tennessee wants to appease the NCAA thensomeone has to go. And Hamillton looks like the most likely candidate. As the AD, he has to see a serious pattern here. One that has gone on throughout his term as AD. Time for Hamilton to go, and allow someone else to come in and finish the clean up. If the new guy wants to clean house with the staffs, then so be it.

Toss Pearl? You think they will let Pearl go?
Maybe they SHOULD … but will they? Isn’t UT like UL with Pitino? “We could can him .. but then where will the program be?” rebuilding … establisihing a new coach … loss of revenue – probably cheaper to keep him. Don’t ou think?
Pearl’s salary has been slashed by $1.5 million and he cannot recruit on the road for a year, serious punishments that imply the violations were plentiful and that Pearl, rather than just being a victim of a staff gone amok, was complicit in the wrongdoing.

I didn't realize Pearl had such a shady past ...
Maybe some new blood is in order … I think the new coaching additions to the SEC (Anthony Grant and Mark Fox) are good for the conference … maybe its time for UT to start looking ….
Impressive recitation TW
You fairly well sum up the seriousness of Pearl’s actions, which really isn’t something people are talking about. I’m still kind of shocked that he lied. He should have known he was busted when he was talkin’ to them. The NCAA didn’t arrive at his doorstep by accident.
As far as the penalties handed down by UT: The financial hit is pretty severe, but for someone who should have millions in assets, I think he’ll survive. The recruiting restrictions are very severe. They basically have no one to recruit off-campus, and in the recruiting game (as you know) getting out and being seen, and getting in living rooms is what it’s all about.
It was announced just a bit earlier tonight that the NCAA is now taking a look at the entire athletic department at UT. That could be disastrous for that program, at least in the near term, and possibly long-term.
When I heard that, my first thought was “loss of institutional control.” That’s what the NCAA will be looking to prove, or disprove.
Wouldn’t want to be Mike Hamilton … not for a million bucks.
If Pearl came clean only after he learned the NCAA was looking at KU recruit, Shelby's, records...
Well, that would do much to diminish his mea culpa’s and tears, wouldn’t it?
I suspect UT fans are in for a long period of cloudy days. No dancing on their pain, though. They did nothing wrong.
No matter where you're at, there you are
UT fans.
I feel sorry for them. Even the ones who vigilantly defended Pearl and talked about how clean of a coach he was and what an upstanding and honest guy he was. They believed in him, so therefore they are more than likely more disappointed than most.
Can’t fault fans for defending their coach, (to a certain extent, of course) — as reasonably defending kinda comes with the job of a “fan”, after all.
Yeah, but they kind of blew their wad in the coach defense world on Kiffin.
Not much left in the reserves to use on Pearl.
All I can say is......
couldn’t happen to a better guy. It’s just a damn shame Lane Kiffin didn’t stay at UT. The Vols led the NCAA in coach buffoonery with both Kiffin and Pearl.
Completely off topic, but. . .
The UK-WKU game will be carried on the ESPN Game Plan package tonight. So those of us in the diaspora who have the package should have no problemsgetting it.
I gotta say, it’s shocking to me how many of our crappy games are on the package. If I were a fan of say, Kansas, I wouldn’t be able to watch half of what I can for UK.
It's summertime - go Reds!
Mike Hamilton
will probably be the only real casualty here, between the Kiffen deal and this, which they apparently knew of for quite some time, will make him the target of even more booster hatred. I have to sit here in Nashville and listen to almost daily vilification of Cal and UK by a guy Matt Jones slaughtered in an impromptu debate on the radio, and though I find no joy in any SEC team getting this kind of attention, there is a bit of guilty pleasure in this whole affair. The UT fan base will still love Pearl.
