Kentucky Basketball: Anthony Davis to UK

Jodie Demling has the story.

This should be fun.  I guess that $200,000 convinced him.  That, or playing at one of the greatest programs in college basketball for a coach who gets players high draft picks into the NBA faster than anyone.

I hear Michael O'Brien has been called back in to write about 25 more "sources" who'll swear that Davis was paid off.

But the upside is that UK is now a mortal lock for their third #1 recruiting class in a row.

Already have a point

Though clearly two can work as well. I think center is the biggest need as Harrellson will graduate and Kanter is supposed to only play one year.

Three Straight #1 Classes

Closest UK ever came to that was in 1978-79-80.

1978 – #1 Dwight Anderson, Top 10 Clarence Tillman, and Top 25 Chuck Verderber. #1 class by some, close to it (by others).

1979 – #1 Sam Bowie, Top 5 Derrick Hord, Top 10 Dirk Minniefield, Top 25 Charles Hurt, and Tom Heitz. Consensus #1 class.

1980 – #1 Prep Melvin Turpin, Top 10 Bret Bearup, Top 25 Jim Master, Top 50 Dicky Beal.

nope. he's eligible to play right now

BUT no matter how talented itll be at least a week before they can get him in pads. This season he’s going to be really behind the eight ball.

Top 10 Recruits

Calipari now has landed 7 in just over 2 years.

Gillispie landed 1 (Patterson) in 2 years.

Tubby landed 6 (Prince, Bogans, Stone, Parker, Morris, Crawford) in 10 years.

Pitino landed 6 (Mashburn, Rhodes, Delk, Walker, Mercer, Turner) in 8 years.

Sutton landed 4 (Chapman, Manuel, Kemp, Mills) in 4 years.

Interesting list.

So far, all of Cal’s are NBA draft picks or projected 1 and dones.
Tubby’s 6 resulted in 2 pretty great UK players (Prince (an all-timer) and Bogans), one bust (Parker), 1 underachiever sitting the bench in NBA (Morris) and one pretty good career trying to make it as a pro (Crawford).
Pitino had 2 All-timers (Mash, Delk), two great but short careers (Mercer, Walker), one pretty good career (Turner).
Sutton has a great but short career (Rex), a never attended (Kemp), and 2 cheaters (Manuel, Mills).

Cal not only brings them in, but so far he has made them look like top 10s. Now he just needs to win it all with a few like Pitino/Tubby (actually, Tubby won it all without any top 10s based on this list).

Turner

He was the only Top 10 recruit on 1997-98 roster.

cross my fingers

If the $200,000 story has any merit at all…and I hope it does NOT…then I hope we only get the player and not the dad along with him.

I am betting that the father turns out to be like

Patrick’s parents. I just wish there was a way to stick it to the Chicago Sun Times.

Yeah +1

I think you’re right about Anthony’s parents. Also his dad has guts. I like that because when
Anthonthy takes the floor we’ll see a reflection of his dad.

The Sun-Times is in the “Matrix” covering the cyberspace war. I hear Laurence Fishburne’s
side is winning. LOL

Canada practices

Need a little help here. I thought I read UK was allowed 10 practices leading up to the trip, but somewhere I thought I heard a Cal Lexi, or interview, where he talked about 17 get togethers. Is it possible to get in trouble with the NCAA if they held too many practices before leaving for Canada? Anybody?

by UK1972 on Aug 14, 2010 11:28 AM EDT reply actions

Number of practices

If I’m not mistaken, they were allowed 10 days to practice. Cal got 17 practices in within those 10 days.

anthony davis

somewhere I have missed —-What position does Anthony Davis play??

by kentuckystrong on Aug 14, 2010 11:37 AM EDT reply actions

He'll probably play at center or at the 4.

He’s listed at 6-9 or 6-10, depending on your source. If you look at him it looks like he isn’t even done growing — he’s still got that gangly look of adolescence. This guy was a 6’ 3" guard before his growth spurt and he’s apparently kept his guard skills! That’s scary.

Well worth the 200K. :)

No matter where you're at, there you are

by cincyblue on Aug 14, 2010 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

whoa, 10 inches

I said center, first, because I think the kids “spurt” isn’t finished and he’ll be hitting the weights. With his gifts, 4 is probably correct — depending on one and dones and the success of the ddmo over the next few years.

Haven’t had a chance to really see the ddmo in action (thank you Cuz). Isn’t the 5 irrelevant as a traditional post-up in the ddmo?

No matter where you're at, there you are

by cincyblue on Aug 14, 2010 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably a 4

But in DDMO, 3 and 4 are pretty much the same. He can shoot the 3, so he won’t be the “5” much. The 5 in the DDMO plays on the weak side of the ball looking for drop offs for lay ups from the driver (over simplified I’m sure).

by JackBluto on Aug 14, 2010 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Sort of

DDM plays 4 out and 1 in. Power forward or Center, the name doesnt matter. There isnt a whole lot of throwing it into the post and letting the big go to work. It’s more driving and kicking to the big if you dont have anything and the big getting offensive rebounds.

Star defensive lineman in

high school, projected as offensive lineman in college (at LSU). Refused grey shirt offer and is looking at other options according to reports on LSU sites.
