The Big Blue Daily Mail -- Canada is Coming Edition
UK fans will get an extra-special treat this year when UK basketball travels to Canada for a 3-day, 3-game exhibition stretch.
Now, for the news:

Krzyzewski Frowns on Thomas’s Consulting Deal - NYTimes.com
Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim, a United States team assistant, agreed with Krzyzewski, citing the potential for conflict of interest. "Pro guys come in all the time to talk to me about my players," Boeheim said. "Well, if I’m a consultant for one team, I would feel like I couldn’t do that — and then I wouldn’t be able to help my own kid.
I think Boeheim gets it right.

Cats beat the heat on first practice in full pads | KentuckySports.com
Phillips praised the intensity level of senior receiver Chris Matthews after practice.
"We've challenged him," Phillips said. "We need him. We've got two dynamic players (Randall Cobb and Locke) and how big is it if you have three? That makes a huge difference when another one comes with them. He did everything he was supposed to do in the blocking area, his routes had intensity, and he attacked the football. That was music to my ears."Football in the heat. I remember some of that from high school. It's tough.

Sanders will take over the play-calling duties this year now that Joker Phillips is taking over the headset of the head coach. Phillips, who has been calling the plays since taking over the offensive coordinator role in 2005, will give up his duties in favor of Sanders as Phillips takes on more responsibility.
Heh. How much Phillips gives up after having the OC job will be interesting.

Video: Cats brave the heat in first day of full pads
You have got to watch this video. Joker Phillips should moonlight as a stand-up comedian. He has some great lines in here, including one late in the video about Moncell Allen and Coach Cal.
I am really excited to hear Raymond Sanders name come up from Joker. This kid is going to be dynamite, and if he were a bigger guy, he would have had more stars by his name. But like Derrick Locke, this kid has it all. Locke has already anointed him his backup, just as he anointed Hartline the starting QB. :-)

Cobb, Doss on Kentucky football's watch list | courier-journal.com | The Courier-Journal
Kentucky junior Randall Cobb and Indiana junior Tandon Doss were named Tuesday to the 50-player preseason watch list for the Biletnikoff Award, presented annually to college football's top wide receiver.
I predict that Randall Cobb wins this award before he leaves UK.

KSN First Look Video: Chane Behanan - Kentucky Sports Network
This guy reminds me of a slightly thicker Darius Miller. The problem is, he's a tweener. He's more of a power player in a wing player's body. His athleticism is good, but clearly not great if you watch the video. "Above the rim" are not the first words that come to mind when you see him.
But he does have a smoothness to his game that reminds me of Miller, and the way he likes to shoot the floater like Miller does and get it into the paint to shoot.
Nice player. Kentucky could use a few like him -- skilled guys who are not "one and dones." He says Orlando Antigua is talking to him.

Mickelson says he has joint ailment | courier-journal.com | The Courier-Journal
Mickelson said he checked into the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota after the British Open to get a second opinion on the illness and has been receiving treatment since. He said he anticipates a complete recovery.
Mickelson said he did not reveal the issue earlier because, "I don't want excuses."I love that attitude. I hope he is fully recovered enough to play well this weekend in the PGA.

SEC is the standard of excellence in college football - ESPN
Forde uses language like "inbreeding" and "tyranny" to describe the SEC. I think this blog has it right.
When did Forde become such a douche? I don't remember him being that way when he was at the Courier-Journal.

Rush The Court " Blog Archive " Morning Five: 08.11.10 Edition
Jeff Goodman reports that WVU head coach Bob Huggins is back to work and feeling much better after his fall that broke seven ribs a couple of weeks ago in Las Vegas. This is definitely good news — all we can hope is that Huggins, who has had a propensity for dangerous falls in the last few years, takes care of himself and stays on his feet going forward.
Glad to hear Huggins is doing well.

Kincaid vs. Sports | TNSP SportsNet
2009-2010- Having been on the job less than three months, Calipari manages to get all the best one and done players in the class to de-commit and come play at Kentucky. John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Daniel Orton and Eric Bledsoe all one and done. Eric Bledsoe is currently under investigation for academic ineligibility. And then there’s this little rumor floating around on the interwebs:
"Word seeped out today that there’s an alleged "arms race" between a major online publication (think ESPN, Yahoo!, etc) and the New York Times to grab a final piece of evidence which will solidify a report that John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins are involved in violation-worthy activities in Kentucky" —Starting to Sound Familiar? Full disclosure, this one is still unsubstantiated. But give it time, people. These Cal haters are so cute. They just cuddle among themselves with their rumors and hopes, lighting candles and cursing the Evil Cal.
I think it's sweet.

Oh sure, there's still that little formality known as the BCS championship game. But down in Dixie, that extra contest is viewed as nothing more than a chance to really rub it in, just in case anyone wishes to defy this indisputable gospel:
When it comes to college football, the SEC is SECond to none.As the song says, "That's just the way it is."

Calipari manages to get all the best one and done players in the class to de-commit and come play at Kentucky. ???
I know everyone here knows this, but let’s just put it in the record again:
Only Cuz was a decommit that came to UK. The other Memphis decommit when to Kansas (you know, the school with a freshman point guard being investigated – or is UK the only school where that happens?) and he was also a one-n-done.
Wall and Bledsoe neither orally committed nor signed with anyone but UK.
Jack, where you went wrong is...
….you used logic……when on a witch hunt for Calipari, logical thinking is kryptonite
Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, is just a freight train coming your way...
I second this
It’s unsporting to use things like “logic” and “facts” in these discussions.
3 > 2, except for very large values of 2.
Good points
I understood Memphis fans’ frustration about Wall, because they had a good chance of landing him with Cal. I don’t think Bledsoe would have gone to Memphis with Cal and Wall. It’s easier to share the spotlight with Wall at UK, where there is more attention to be found. And he completely whiffed on Orton.
Where is the outrage about Dodson? It reeks of jealousy to me if you only focus on the most publicized offenses. If it were really about the principle of the thing, he would complain about Dodson. He also didn’t bring up other Memphis players with academic problems, who haven’t been stars in the NBA yet.
It bothers me that people can read this stuff and say “I don’t like Cal so it must be true”.
Travis Ford over-recruits and its no big deal apparently
Oklahoma St senior captain gives up his scholarship so no one has to be cut from the team. Something tells me that if it was Cal signing too many players, this would be front page news.
Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."
Matthews is so important
Phillips praised the intensity level of senior receiver Chris Matthews after practice.
If he can become nearly the threat that Cobb is, defenses will literally have too much to handle.
Unfortunately Matthews can’t make it happen all by himself. He’s got to have consistency from whomever will be throwing to him.
This is true
only if he starts running the right routes when reading the coverage. If he’s going to be a star, this ability needs to show up NOW.
Embracing The Hate......Embracing The Hate.......
Why do we alsways have to embrace the hate? Shouldnt someone else have to do it for a while???
Darius Miller as the leader of this team sounds great, but is he ready to fill that role?
The SEC is not the sure lock this year that it has been in year’s past. That is unless Urban Meyer is hiding something down in Florida. Otherwise people would not be talking about the prospects of us going 8-4 or 9-3.
An “Arms Race” among journalists in sports? Well, I guess since they dont use their brains, their arms would be the next most logical place to work from.
I AM THE CAT......The Cat In The Hat!!!
I think all of the schools (and franchises) with rich traditions "embrace the hate,"
and I think it’s become a meaningless cliche. All of the OSU fans here in Columbus talk about doing it…my 2 friends who just graduated from Notre Dame law school do it (though not as much as they used to!), and, as a Steeler fan in Ohio, I embrace the hate constantly.

Cal is at the top of the coaching profession, so...
there will always be that “low rent” reporter(s) looking to make their mark by bringing the “king” down. This isn’t just about UK basketball, it just happens to be a venue for these people. Every sport, entertainment, financial profession, has that individual that someone is looking to bring down. That isn’t going to change for a long time unfortunately.
People hate those at the top
Plenty of other schools feel they receive an unfair amount of hate, or some other injustice. I’m a grad student at Illinois, and everybody here feels like the world is out to get the Illini.
I’m confident Darius can fill that role, as it sounds like Cal has confidence in him. I feel like BCG really stunted his growth as a basketball player and as a leader. People like to talk about how Cal is only good at recruiting, but what I saw last year showed me he’s good at getting the best out of players.
Colin Cowherd had an interesting piece about this on ESPN Radio today..
Pretty much said that all sports NEED to have the percieved “bad guy” in order to remain interesting …that is what makes sports compelling and keeps fan’s butts in the seats. He was referring to the fact that all of a sudden most sports fans now “hate” the Miami Heat..but emphasized that this is not a bad thing it is just part of the process. He mentioned other teams like: Yankees, Lakers, Duke (go figure) as teams that are hated but are the back bone of their respective league or sport..I think UK may have been a better example for CBB in the current environment..but Duke will do..so lets keep all this hate in the perspective..College Basketball needs UK on that wall (please accept this “A Few Good Men” reference)..
"When Kentucky comes in #10..."
Reading that, without the list in front of me, I was initially enraged. However, looking at the list, I can’t argue with Chris Low (a solid, objective writer) there, except for MSU…but MSU beats us all the time. It’s the harsh reality of being in the SEC.
has anyone seen the SEC football TV schedule?
i am having a hard time finding it but a coworker told me the Cats are going to be on TV quite a bit this season…
any ideas?
I have kleptomania,
but when it gets bad,
I take something for it.
I thought
only the first three weeks schedule had been released. In any case, last year I think I caught every game either on TV or the internet, unless its a pay-per-view.
As a sidelight, anyone know the best way to get tickets for away games – specifically Ole Miss?

Help! anyone have a roster for UK for the Canadian Games?
Looking forward to seeing the game Sunday in Windsor (only 45 minutes from where I live) but can find nothing posted about the possible Kentucky roster. Tried over on UK Athletics and here, and only rosters available are for last years team.
Anything you can email me either on facebook, or to walanman@netscape.net would be appreciated.
