Should the 'Cats move out of Rupp?

That's the question ALLBLUCAT takes on in his latest post over at Wildcat Blue Blog.  I'm for staying at Rupp until it falls down, but ABC makes a cogent argument as to why the 'Cats should seek to move into a sparkling new arena.

How 'bout them(CATS) or (Cowboys)

My first UK b ball game at Rupp was Dec 1974 (of course, UK won…. just like this year they won them all back then!!) Comin’ from Texas, where no one had a basketball (or could spell without a dictionary) I was in awe of the basketball presence of UK… Man, they were good, real good and just seemed to get better every game…every year! Man, I loved ’em!!! Regretably, I only got to see 78 more memorable games at Rupp before retiring and moving back to Texas. I will tell you this, I saw the UT / UNC game at the new Cowboys Stadium and the CATS Should be here!!! IF, and thats a big IF, UK had a palace (not as big as this one) but w/luxury boxes, big screens and the glitz one cannot dream that big without talking to Jerry Jones… WOW… this would be a really special place to play college basketball and no doubt very intimidating to any opponent!!!! I would have to go back to Lex… for a FEW more games!!!!

My argument is based on simple logic.....the best team in the land deserves the best facility in the land.

I love Rupp…….it holds many special memories for me, but I will support any efforts to build a new facility, and I want it to be bigger and better than any other.

I'm all for a new arena

but at the very minimum let’s get Rupp some long overdue upgrades. The tiny hanging CRT televisions for giving the upper-level folk replays would be hilarious if they weren’t so sad.

holding 35.000… bet we would still sell it out

Rupp Arena is a barn

Rupp always has been and continues to be nothing more than a glorified barn. If a new arena could be built without burdening the taxpayers it should definitely be replaced. Its at least twenty years outdated and has always had a complete lack of charm other than its emotional attachment to UK fans. I’d tear it down in a heartbeat.

Renovations can go a long, long way

Thompson-Boling only looks like it did five years ago on the outside – the inside has been completely redone, and all of the UT folks love it. Rupp has such a good feel, I’d hate to see that go away even as a rival fan. Upgrade and renovate and maybe you can get the best of both worlds.

I agree.

I LOVE Rupp. Keep it and spend the money renovating it.

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

Lots of issues w/ Rupp

But my main one is the blue hairs (and I don’t mean students with wigs). I love the idea of the eRupption Zone, and I hate that a majority of our loud, passionate fans are priced out/ blocked out from the lower arena by stodgy old folks who get angry when someone stands up.

I say, when we build a new arena, surround the court with a student section (or at least a LARGE section, preferably right behind the opponent’s bench). Move the rich old folks to luxury boxes stuffed with Metamucil and dinner, served promptly at 4:30pm before a game.

Make it so that our new home court is somewhere opponents literally FEAR to enter. I’d love to have the most intimidating home court advantage in basketball. Rupp’s a great place, but we can and should do more. We need excited, loud, passionate fans screaming at the top of their lungs for the entire game, even starting before anyone steps foot on the court. I’m talking bordering-on-a-riot type of stuff. That’d be awesome.

The best team in basketball deserves the best arena, the best home court advantage in basketball. Let’s hope the powers that be make it happen.

Those "blue hairs"

and their rich husbands and their money is what built and pays for Rupp. Just ask them what they payed before and are still paying for those seats!

yeah

I hate hearing the older fans mocked. They pay the big $$ for those seats, and the program depends on that support—for, among other things, subsidizing dirt cheap student tickets. The program needs BOTH knds of fans, well-to-do older foks and energetic broke college kids, and I don’t think the older fans should really be made fun of just because they’re not painting their chests and hopping around screaming.

Todays paper

said $5,000 up front to buy good seats. Tickets are another $40 per game. “Cheap” seats $35 per.
