Mark Story on UK fans' First Games

Last week, the Lexington Herald-Leader's Mark Story wrote an article about people with a UK-connection and their first live Kentucky sporting event (football or basketball).  In his column he then asked folks to email him with their first UK game experience, and of course, he received an enthusiastic response.

This week Story publishes some of the responses he received.  It's really quite entertaining, and you just might recognize one of the respondents.

So, let's hear your first live UK game experience Big Blue Nation!

UK frosh won, 64-54. Also saw frosh game the next year (January 1968) but UC won.

First varsity game was UK at Northwestern in November 1975. UK lost, 89-75.

No, Tru doesn't mind:) We link the site quite often.

Just to be clear: Paul has asked me and Tru both to write a few articles for him over the last year. I’m not a regular contributor to the site.

It is a good site; Paul and the other guys do a fine job.

12/1/1965

Against Hardin-Simmons. Rupp’s Runts won 83-55 and I sat right behind Coach Lancaster in the second row of folding chairs on the floor (baseline in those days). Of course, earlier that same night I actually saw part of the Kitten game against Xavier (and played in the part I didn’t “see”) so I had to do some work for my good seat.

It seemed just as special then as it does now.

I Miss The Kittens (Frosh) Games

That was a big part of the fun in the 1960’s.

1984-

Was probably my first UK game. In Nashville, at the Southeastern Conference Tournament. It was really great. The Cats won the thing on a late basket by Kenny Walker. But, my most memorable first game was the first time I went to Rupp to see the Cats. It was 1992, and my wife had just bought a new Honda Accord. We drove to Lexington and saw the Cats play Nolan Richardson’s Hogs. The place was electric. The Hogs had some great players then and their Forty Minutes Of Hell defense. They pretty much ran the Cats ragged. But, late in the second half the Cats made a run and I thought the roof was ging to come off the building. Arkansas held on to win though, and I believe it was Pitino’s first loss at Rupp.

Tuesday january 26 1993

a young uk fan finally got to see his favorite college team after 4 years of waiting to go to a game he finally had arrived … and boy was he ever satisfied with the game, he got to see mashburn(his favorite player at that time) go 13 for 19 with 27 pts and watched his team destroy lsu 105-67, he even got to see dale brown get ejected 32 seconds into the second half, but what made this kids day and still to this day is the best uk experience(personal)he has ever had was actually meeting the team after the game.
AND THATS MY FIRST UK LIVE EXPERIENCE
