Around SBN: NFL Owners Vote to Change Trade Deadline

Iowa/Big 10 fan that moved to KY recently...

So are you guys going to be any good this year? I'm guessing I'll be stuck watching a lot of KY/L'Ville/TN ball this year. Should I turn the channel to a different game? I don't really know much about KY football beyond that my wife says you all are a hoopyball school, which is obviously not a ringing endorsement. Clue me in. Who to watch, what to look for, strengths, weaknesses, inexplicable stuff your coaching staff clings to like 3rd/10 draw plays.

Go to the archives to check out a few of the football posts over the last

couple of weeks, and look for a position-by-position breakdown of the Kentucky football team over the coming weeks.

Welcome to A Sea of Blue … we already like you because of you incredible discernment concerning our friends down I-64.

BTW: I loved Chuck Long!

I lived in Detroit area

when Long was drafted. Too bad it didn’t work out, but then Detroit has killed a lot of QBs.

First Things First

You must explain — if it’s not disgustingly graphic — your title.

So there I was...

Sitting at my computer, trying to figure out a user name. The Iowa SBN website is described by others as “batshit insane”. They proudly own that. So I was trying to come up with something along those lines. Iowa’s D Coordinator has a bad case of diabetes, and had a toe amputated a few years ago, and another one last year. I had been drinking, so naturally this seemed like a great idea. It took me forever on google image trying to find a pic of more than 1 toe that wasn’t absolutely disgusting. Frostbite, breaks, crushing injuries, etc. So that’s the story to that. Here’s link to the Iowa site, it will take some back ground reading to get up to speed on the running themes, but once you got the basics down, hilarity ensues.

Drinking, Huh?

Hope it was bourbon because if it wasn’t … well, you know what they say about first impressions.

Negative on the Bourbon...

I know you guys make it and all. But I’m from beer country.

by Norm Parker's Amputated Toes on Jul 26, 2010 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

beer? bourbon?

If you ask me, it’s all fabulous.

Though I tend to drink bourbon more in the fall/winter than in the spring/summer as I’m sort of seasonal in what I like to drink and I tend to associate bourbon with cooler weather — I must say that I really do totally love bourbon. It’s one of my overall favorites.

But, since its summer, and lighter and more refreshing drinks are in order at present, I currently prefer such things as mojito’s, plain ol’ cold beer like you mentioned, and I just recently discovered that Firefly Vodka. It’s an iced tea flavored vodka and you mix it with a dash of lemonade and garnish with a lemon. Have you had it? It’s a great summer cocktail.

I guess you could say that I’m an equal opportunity friend when it comes to cocktails. As far as I’m concerned, they all deserve a chance. : )

So, NPAT (I just had to shorten your username for convenience, hope you don’t mind), the fact that you don’t drink bourbon is ok. Just as long as you are drinking something is great with me.

So, reading the football stuff....

Guarded optimism is the general feeling?

Probably nothing for FL , and would be happy with a good showing. Genuinely competitive with main rival TN. How about vs. GA and Auburn? I’m figuring you beat SC and Vandy, Vandy easily. What about MS St.? Any outrageous “the record goes out the window” teams you guys play?

by Norm Parker's Amputated Toes on Jul 26, 2010 9:13 PM EDT reply actions

Pretty much

Kentucky is not much on football. We’ve consistently improved over the last few years…but come nowhere near competing in the insanely stacked SEC. We don’t even compare to Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

We haven’t beat Tennessee in like 24 years (longer than I’ve been alive) though last year we got really close.

When it comes to football, I tend to follow the SEC as a whole instead of following UK only.

A season with double digits in the win category would be something ridiculous and probably riotous celebration-worthy for the UK football faithful.

But you’ll soon notice (if you haven’t already) that we tend to treat football as a precursor to basketball season.

We dig basketball a lot. Turns out we’re ok at it.

Envy our past, fear our future. Embrace the hate. - UK Basketball

65,000 fans at Commonwealth Stadium would

rightly disagree with the sentiment of your post.

by Ken Howlett on Jul 27, 2010 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely

I enjoy, revel, relish, savor, study, absorb and, yes, totally get into football (pee wee to pros) more than any other sport. While I thoroughly enjoy and root for my Cats basketball with the best of them, I’m not alone among the Wildcat faithful that don’t treat football as a precursor to basketball.

NPAT, I know Iowa has a great tradition in football (I married a Hawkeye) that doesn’t approach the rabidness you are accustomed to, but you may be in for a treat. Kentucky has been slowly improving in the crushing SEC East and you may have caught the team in their rise from pre-basketball diversion to a bonafide, perennial contender and winning program.

Welcome to what may be a great ride. (Never say we don’t maintain our optimism.)

well, *I* liked your post :)

Come on y’all, I know we aren’t supposed to admit it, but you know he’s kind of right. Not for you personally perhaps, but overall. Certainly there are a bunch of individual UK football fans, and the team really does get good fan support considering, but I feel pretty comfortable stating that as far as emotional attachement and importance to the people, it’s nowhere even close to what the state feels about basketball—that’s really all I felt like he/she was saying. “Kentucky is not much on fooball” might be slightly hyperbolic, but not by THAT much.

Also, “We dig basketball a lot. Turns out we’re ok at it” sums up everything so nice and concisely, don’t you think?

by blue kentucky girl on Jul 27, 2010 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Oops didn't mean to start anything

I took from the comment that Rof was intimating that UK fans don’t care about football. And that’s just not right, by a long shot.

by Ken Howlett on Jul 28, 2010 2:19 AM EDT up reply actions

No offense...

But that’s the vibe I get from you all. Not just the interwebz, but in RL. I moved down here last Dec. I mention football, and the subject gets changed to basketball. If I wanted to talk about hoopyball, I would have brought it up. Football=something to ignore, seems like. Start talking about making, never mind winning, a BCS bowl, and people just act like you are speaking Swahili. Do you guys really not GAF about football? Let me know, seriously. I’ll jet and go some place else.

There are a few of us football diehards on here

It is true that the majority of the posters here are all basketball all the time, but I’m equally fanatic about both, and several others are as well.

You will find that several here LUV to talk football

But the fact is, UK leans more towards being a basketball school. (I was born a basketball fan, and have become a huge fan of football)!! That being said, I do think UK football fans are growing in numbers. Maybe one day, it will be a little more even. Wouldn’t that be great!!!

You are fine.

This is a place to talk about Kentucky sports. Football is a sport.

While it’s true that you might not get as much discussion going about football as basketball around here (as in your real life experiences), but for you to want to talk football is totally cool.

Ken (the person who posted above and has the cute little baby on his profile pic) actually has a really good football related post up right now on the front page. Sometimes it’s easier to strike up conversation on the front page than it is here in the fanshots ‘cause it’s more easily visible to the football fans that are lurking out there.

Oh, and welcome to ASoB. The toe is interesting for sure and definitely makes you memorable (in a good way), though personally I would have preferred a painted one. : )

Oh I know you didn't mean to start anything, Ken

You are an exceptionally nice person :) I didn’t mean to either, though I might have sounded like I was. I just think we should OWN the fact that we as a people are basketball-obsessed, that always basketball comes first in our collective little sports hearts, and everything else gets sloppy seconds— and not protest too much against that characterization when all the evidence points to it being true. Admiting that we are way more into basketball than football seems like one of those things one just isn’t supposed to say to polite company—but I think we should call a spade a spade, so to speak.

Don't really disagree with ya

There is no doubt more UK fans are passionate about BB than FB … really not a debate, but, the ones who follow football, fewer they may be, are pretty passionate about it.

But, I do agree 100% with you on the fact that we should “OWN the fact that we as a people are basketball-obsessed.” Heck, that’s the reason the team is always so good, that’s the reason Barnhart went out and got Cal, etc, etc. We demand the bb team be good to great.

It’s just not that way with football, at least not near the extent as it is in bb.

And oh, my comment from above about not starting anything was tongue in cheek

by Ken Howlett on Jul 28, 2010 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm curious

Since “we demand the bb team to be good to great” and then they ARE…do you think it works both ways? If UK fans “demanded” the fb team to be great too, then would they eventually BE great? Is it a self-fulfilling prophesy? I’m really not sure—I can see it both ways, I guess—just interesting to consider.

by blue kentucky girl on Jul 28, 2010 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

For the demanding to be great to work for FB...

Especially for FB due to the injury casualties, you must must must have coaching stability. Obviously, this coach must be good. But you have to have a guy like Ferentz at Iowa, Tressell at Ohio State, Mack Brown at Texas, Stoops at Oklahoma. Somebody that likes what they do, and where they do it. They won’t be the Pete Carroll or Urban Meyer or Chip Kelly and skin out for the next perceived greener pasture. You also need stability with your coordinators. You can’t be firing the HC and the coordinators every time a bad year rolls around. You simply can’t improve every year. There will be periodic regressions. But if they run a good scheme, recruit good kids, and are competitive in their conference, you don’t can them if things don’t work out during a season here or there, ala Mark Richt at Georgia. My opinion, anyway. That and a buck will get you a cup of coffee most places.

And then you need to do it again...

Rome wasn’t built in a day. And you don’t build a dynasty in one coaches job term.

Good points Toes

And almost verbatim what UK has been doing for eight years:

Very few staff changes, and at least trying to recruit high character kids.

by Ken Howlett on Jul 29, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Re: blue kentucky

I would think so. I know this, if there were as many fb fans as there are bb fans, then Bill Curry (who I like) would not have coached at UK for seven years, and Hal Mumme would never have been hired.

Thanks, C.M.

by Ken Howlett on Jul 29, 2010 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Every time I see

Curry’s name, I now think of the “great” start Georgia State is going to have kicking off their football program with him as their first head coach. I pity them.
