SEC Football Helmets. A bit of history.
The above link is courtesy of our member, Remote Cardinal and was also posted in the fanshots, but I thought this was a pretty cool look at all the SEC teams’ helmets both current and of years gone by so I wanted to share it on the front page (thanks, Remote Cardinal).
I’m sure a bit of work went into the above compilations and it’s pretty neat to see, so take a quick look.
Personally speaking and about UK helmets only, I would say that my favorite helmet would have to be that of the one worn in the years 1963-1968 (it’s similar to what Alabama currently has).
I know they are super plain are aren’t real flashy or anything, but I have a soft spot for old-school things and for me, the simple, very basic helmet just conjures up images of those old black-and-white photos and especially images of the coaches of that time as back then coaches would actually dress for games. Shirts and ties, long coats, fedoras, you know, really "dress"? Yeah, I love that sort of polish and refinement.

Very cool look at helmets of the past
I tend to take the ‘less is more’ attitude when it comes to uniforms/helmets. I love Bama and Penn State unis … simple, classy.
I have always despised the all blue unis that the UK fb team wears from time to time for home games. They look like smurfs … just too much blue.
Very nicely done, RemoteCardinal.
Looks like a lot of work, but appreciated. My gut reaction would be to vote Tennessee the ugliest helmet in the SEC; of course, my gut reacts that way for anything with an orange T. Upon further reflection I’d have to go with Vandy for the ugly winner through the years.
I don't know that
Remote Cardinal actually did the work on the helmet story, but he was the first to link it here on ASoB, so that’s why I gave him props.
Sorry if that was confusing and came out wrong in what I wrote above. : )
Oh goodness.
I certainly didn’t compile all that work. I just stumbled on the website (by way of a rumor that UofL was getting a new helmet design this season), thought it was super cool and wanted to share with you guys.

Since you double-posted the link, I won't feel at all bad about double-posting my comment.
I always liked the 1990-96 helmets with the outlined block K.
I also really like the three variants with the wildcat-head logo: 1963-68 (wildcat on the right side, player’s number on the left), 1973-74 (wildcat head over an outline of Kentucky), and October 2, 2004 (1973-74 design with the colors inverted).
I’ve never really liked the interlocking block UK that’s been used since 1997. (Though the university "UK" logo with the Memorial Hall outline between the letters is one of the best university logos out there.)
really fun to look at
…and I don’t even like football. I like South Carolina and Vandy’s the least because of the busier, less distinct logos, and don’t care for Georgia’s too much—although the style is nice, I personally strongly dislike red and black as a color scheme (it’s so garish and ugly and U of L). I like UT’s very well because as…ahem…unique a shade of orange that is, at least it’s distinctive, and with the logo very simple, I find it kind of a nice look. LSU also has the benefit of a unique color scheme, but the style’s way too busy to me, with that two-tone thing. Alabama’s got my hands-down favorite in the current look—it’s the NY Yankees uniform of football helmets, and as much as I hate the Yankees, I very much appreciate the clean, crisp, masculine, non-froufrou vibe of their uniforms. Arkansas and Kentucky’s are nice too. I’m partial to the 1972 UK helmet, just because of the adorably retro logo. Which I really, really need on a cute little tee.
Love to BSC for allowing me to talk about clothing in TWO posts this week!
