Nick Saban is Preaching to the Choir

Paul Jordan, the owner of the excellent Wildcat Blue Blog, has asked several UK bloggers to contribute to his blog while he is away on vacation.  My post, entitled "Nick Saban is Preaching to the Choir" is now up on the site.  For my take on Saban's rant at SEC Football Media Days on Wednesday, click here.

I hope you enjoy.

Campus Of Eden

As in the Biblical — there are similar stories in other religions and cultures — story of Eden and the fall of humanity there is blame to be parceled out to all the participants of the lucre, tempter and tempted game played out on college campuses. Does fault lie with the evil serpent (dangled benefits) or with the seducer (agent) or the wretchedly weak, not quite innocent, bewitched seduced (player). Throughout the millennia societies primitive and sophisticated have attempted to alter human nature with rules as harsh as death and punishment eternal — all to little avail. I expect the same results here especially as the serpent becomes larger and the seducer more prevalent. Or as said in “The Blob”:

“You can’t stop it, you can only hope to contain it.”

I like one of the things

Coach Phillips (can I just say Joker?) has instituted. He is giving some of the responsibility for uncovering these “serpents” upon the younger players since they would be the ones to suffer when violations occur. A very good move; it not only helps get more eyes on potential problems, but also instills in the players the importance of compliance from the start of their career at UK.

I've taken to calling Joker, Phillips

As I wrote in the piece, it’s the young teammates of the superstars that most often suffer the consequences. Nothing wrong with having those same youngsters be an extra set of eyes and ears in the locker room, and elsewhere.

I will say this much, SOMEONE NEEDS TO BE PREACHING TO SOMEONE

And although I too think he may be making a good show of it, the points do not go unnoticed. ESPN is picking this up and running with it. There is an ESPN insider article that 20 major college basketball coaches were interviewed for anonymously and asked their opinions and info on the NCAA and it’s rules, and there are some people starting to ask the right questions…….but will anyone be able to provide the answers?
