John Calipari Stays Grounded Despite Success

"As long as I'm at Kentucky, you've got to be able to take the shots or don't stay at Kentucky.  To be the coach at Kentucky and get what I get, you can't be a 35-year-old coach who's never been fired.  I've been fired."

"If your family can't deal with the scrutiny then this isn't the right place to be coaching."

John Calipari to ESPN's Andy Katz (for the full article click here).

I found this quote interesting for this reason: Calipari, even though he has yet to experience/cause much consternation among UK fans, still realizes that the infamous big blue wrath lies just beneath the surface, ready to reveal itself if "things go south."

After puttting together an historic season in 2010 -- historic because of the success of the team in spite of their relative youth -- his words indicate he realizes he will still be held accountable by those who bleed blue if he doesn't fulfill the promise of greatness his hiring brought to the bluegrass.

If people think

the only way to beat UK is to trash John Calipari until he is replaced, they better think again. When Coach Cal is gone, next year or ten years from now, UK will find a winning coach to take his place. It is like “the King is dead, long live the King”.

I woke up feeling BLUE this morning. It's gonna be a great day.

I sorta disagree

I think “trash John Calipari until he is replaced” is exactly what a lot of people want to do – some of them in high places, and some of them supposed to be our friends on paper (SEC I’m looking at you).

I also think that if that plan happens to succeed, UK will get another coach, for sure. But things are happening in CBB right now. The context is changing. If the one and done rule, for example, is withdrawn, the result will still be one and done in most cases, because players want to go to school for one or two years – look at Wall, he didn’t have to go to college at all.
Even if UK manages to get another star-coach, there will never be another Calipari. There will never be another coach with Cal’s cachet among recruits.

I think the way to keep Calipari is to respect him. The enemies of the program are betting that the UK admin and the fans will reach a breaking point. If the drumbeat of criticism and speculation keeps up long enough, BBN will lose its nerve – I mean, it’s happening on this blog here and there.

Cal believes in loyalty, not just to a contract, but to a person. He may have reached out to see what’s there for him in the NBA because Barnhart and Todd may have started to get a little queasy because of the Bledsoe situation.

If Cal gets nailed he gets nailed, but if we start to whine and bitch before he gets nailed, my guess would be that UK would spend like several decades in the wilderness of “not being relevant”. UK would be seen as a job too tough for ANY coach. They say nobody “wants it” like BBN, but it’s not enough to want it, you have to recognize it when you have it and not trade it off for something else.

In life, you always have to give up something good to get something good. I don’t think we have even realized the possibilities Cal represents yet. His upside is multiples of what we would have settled for, and yet there is more. But maybe we have to show a little message discipline and not get all wet every time there is ominous speculation.

“Where there’s smoke there’s fire” makes damn little sense in this situation because there are so many professional smoke generators out there right now, trying to undermine Cal’s position because they don’t want Kentucky to be a top-5 team for years and years.

It’s a game of guts-ball, but my gut says if we lose our nerve and start thinking we should cut ties to Calipari before he drags us down any further – that way lies disaster. We gotta dance with the fella what brung us.

Thanks creach for a “right on” response. I believe you hit the nail on the head. We know we are right and we need to standfast “until the inferenal regions freeze over.”

It is prudent to remember that Messrs. Todd and Barnhart are politicians first and fans next. I’m not hurling accusations at them because I respect their positions. But they are who they are. And I’m positive that it takes a good bit of political skill to deal with the fan
base, SEC, NCAA and the Media.

Actually they seem to be doing a good job. I hope they do not falter. If they do we can color
Calipari gone.

Here’s something that just crossed my mind. There are a number of very good coaches out there who, I’m sure would love to coach the BB. However they have never been approached
with the offer.

I wonder, could there be some serious underlying jealously here?

It does take a strong person to put up with embrace us. I think the vast majority of the BBN expect our coach to not take it lightly either. I am really glad he gets what it takes.

sorta disagree with this too

Cal is not bigger than Kentucky, but Kentucky is not “destined” to have BB greatness. It’s not big blue wrath I’m worried about, because that wrath ought rightly to be directed at the SEC, the NCAA, and a lot of people at rival schools who are working overtime to cap Cal because that’s all they know to do. The Jones story was a nerve-wracking nightmare for a lot of BBN because it seemed to make Cal look bad…but in the end not only does Jones exonerate Cal but his final decision sends the clearest message of all to the rival schools: we can beat you anyway.

It’s not big blue wrath that scares me but big blue whining. Big blue bladder control. Is there a safer way to go, not so much controversy? Yes. Hire Travis Ford, pledge to have half of every team be Kentucky natives, and we’ll all go over the cliff together.

It could be fun. Winning isn’t everything.

Winning isn't everything to me creature

I want our teams to have FUN, first. I am not one that lives and dies by championships. Sure winning is fun, but I want our program to be respected for the great tradition we have been able to witness grow through the years.
I listened to a podcast with Mitch Barnhart today and he said he told Cal something similar to, the wind always blows harder at the top of the flagpole. (Remember Cal’s top of the mountain speech?) What he said is very true. I wonder if he was trying to encourage Cal to hang in there, or just offering his observations of life at the top. We may never know.

Blue... there is no other color to Bleed !!!

by a2d2 on Jun 6, 2010 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

well, that's why I said that

To restore what Kentucky basketball used to be, you have to make it authentic. That means hire a real Kentucky coach and put Kentucky players on the floor. Then, even if you don’t win a championship, you have a nice story, and if you ever do win, it’s epic.

But even THAT sort of “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Coliseum” kind of story would work better if UK left the SEC. Did you get to that part yet?

I think Mitch was just saying that in the current environment, there will always be negative pressure on Cal. Roy is untouchable, and Krzyzewski is untouchable, and many other coaches have support within both the formal and informal structure of the NCAA that keeps them out of trouble. Look at Calhoun for God’s sake. But even though Cal has dealt honestly with the NCAA when he has dealt with them – he’s too close to their enemies, the shoe companies and the summer leagues.

by creature on Jun 6, 2010 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

tradition

As regards the “great tradition”, look at how this developed. First you have Rupp, and legendary Kentucky players like Wah Wah Jones. You have some immigrants, but they all love Kentucky and become beloved as well.
Joe Hall is the apostolic successor, and wins a banner, though with great difficulty.
Then you get Sutton, who was a Southerner, and who knew how to handle the program, and a great coach. We’ll never know how long it would have taken Eddie to get a title.
But Sutton made “our tradition” an ambiguous one, because he made us repeat violators.
Next, you got a “foreign” coach. But HE demonstrated exceptional love for Kentucky and became beloved. If it hadn’t been for one night in Porcini’s Rick would be coaching at UK right now.
Pitino introduced UK to national recruiting. Even so, he was very sensitive to the value of having no-foolin’ Kentucky boys on the floor, as our Secretary of Agriculture will tell you.
Tubby was to Rick as Hall was to Rupp. And HE got a title rather easily. But nationally, Tubby was our vaccination against stereotyped criticism.
And that brings us into the “modern age”.
Traditions are complex. Sometimes they cut in more than one direction. I’m trying to argue, at some length, that respect for the UKBB involves respect for Kentucky, the state; and this is a very desirable thing but requires a lot of thought.

by creature on Jun 6, 2010 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Pitino Recruiting?

Hall signed Robey, Williams, Shidler, Macy, Willoughby, Foschi, Bowie, Hord, Bearup, Master, Walker, Harden, Blackmon, Madison, Jenkins, Davender, Thomas, Anderson, Tillman, Verberber.

All HS A-A. None from KY. Instead LA – CO – IL – IN – NJ – MN – PA – TN – NY – GA – FL – OH. Sounds “national” to me.

Pitino signed 5 McDonalds A-A in 8 years. Players like Travis Ford, Derek Anderson, Anthony Epps, Scott Padgett were big reasons for his UK success.

Pitino is WAY past his prime now.

Same at other schools

Alabama, as has been shown, is a target of Auburn and especially Tennessee. Remember Fulmer avoiding the supeona and not going to the SEC football meetings? I’m sure it happens to any successful program.
At Kentucky one thing we need to avoid is blowing up internally. We don’t need to give anyone something to go after. The Bledsoe thing, hopefully will blow over but it only shows that some one will take advantage of anything they can find to go after us.

I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.

by ParisGuy on Jun 6, 2010 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

true

“We don’t need to give anyone something to go after.” They already always have something.

Not only will they take advantage of anything they can find, but they will make stuff up and then “find” it.

When I was a kid, I won some money betting the “crazy mouse” at the fair. But the carny guy just raked in my money because I was a kid. You make me think of this because you seem to be relying on the fairness of an authority that is not fair. Listen, Calipari’s recruiting success justifies any strike against him, if you are Kansas or Duke.

“Blowing up internally” in this case means just what I understand you think we should do: back away from Calipari, try to get into some sort of neutral crouch so that the NCAA will not punish us. I don’t agree with that (if I have mistaken your position excuse me).

As a football fan: do you actually believe that Kentucky can ever win the SEC under any circumstances? I don’t, and for that reason I would like to see them leave the SEC. Over 20 years, Kentucky MIGHT be allowed to rotate into the slot usually occupied by Georgia or Auburn for a year or two, but the status of Florida, Bama and LSU has to remain fixed for financial reasons.

Is Cal readily available to the local media?

I have no idea, is why I ask. Being local, I have been wondering why there is little TV coverage with Cal. It seems he wants to reach out nationally with his website, tweets and such, which is fine. I think local fans are hungry to hear more from our coach, just look at the large numbers that stay after games for the radio broadcast. KY fans are very loyal to the program. It is how we are wired. I have been thinking the media wanted to report more but couldn’t, not that they wouldn’t. There really is a demand by the fans to hear more, put the media games aside.
Any insights?

Living in Lexington

I have heard rumblings that the local media is annoyed that Cal tends to do more national media and gives his interviews to the national forums rather than talking with local press.

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

by kentuckygirl0724 on Jun 7, 2010 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't hear fans complaining (but I don't live locally to UK - just virtually)

But I do “hear” (as in read) comments from the press that indicates to me at least an annoyance that Cal and Katz seems better friends than any media person in Ky.

There are local media “homers” though. For the most part, Clay would be helpful and is generally objective, his recent article dissected here notwithstanding. Vaught is a homer, a cheerleader even, and while at times I think too much of a homer he gets great interviews and lots of stories.

Still, I don’t that I disagree with Cal’s approach. After all, if we are selling a national product and recruiting nationally, we want our word covered nationally.

National Is Local

Appears that Calipari has a better understanding of today’s communication environment than do a few of UK’s fans — and definitely more comprehension than the near incestuous local media. As observed recently Calipari has brought UK recruiting into the 21st century, diagnosing quite accurately that UK recruits not just nationally but literally globally (see signing of Turk Enes Kanter and representation in the PRC). Today’s verisimilitude is that a comment/interview/news release to a person or group with a global following becomes a local report in a matter of milliseconds and thus is quite a bit more efficient way of marketing the fine product that is UK BB. Ergo my advice to local media and parochial fans: Get over it.

You are right on target, Wild Weasel ("National is Local")

.
Aside from an occasional “pity quote” thrown the way of a couple of locals to make them feel all giddy and important, my browser is able to load ESPN’s website just as fast as the Herald-Leader site. And as far as local goes, high quality blogs like ASoB and KSR are so far ahead of the traditional local news outlets in content and quality of writing that I barely even remember the traditionals exist until they do something like try to chase a coach through a building or completely make something up about a player’s automobile.

Going straight to the national outlets is obviously the most efficient way to conduct that aspect of the business. We should all be happy that it is available to us this way. When the day ever returns that the largest outlet interested in a quote from our basketball coach is the Herald-Leader, we will find ourselves staring straight up once again at a loooong climb back up the hill.

Absolutely right on.

When the local media have their own agenda more times than not, why wouldn’t Cal go to a source that doesn’t distort what he says. The old saying, “fool me once, shame on me, fool twice, shame on you” applies here.

It is just the way it is. You guys write very well, and so do the guys over at KSR.

Now, before you get too big-headed, I will confess that if Chuck Culpepper was still at the Herald-Leader it could be a different story. I actually went to the Amazon website one time and found that english soccer book that Culpepper wrote and read several pages out of that book on-line… and I don’t even like soccer apart from the World Cup and the sheer magnitude of its international importance.

So aside from the ghost of Culpepper, the absolute quality of local writing is on these blogs. That is just a simple fact. No payment necessary!
