Kentucky Basketball: Interview with Red94, ESPN's TrueHoop Houston Rockets Blog

Rahat Huq of the ESPN TrueHoop Network affiliate Red94 (Houston Rockets) asked me a few questions this morning about DeMarcus Cousins.  In typical fashion, the response was rather long and detaled.

I think I had a comment or two about the last interview I did with SEC Rage's Unleash the Rage program that we did not go into a great deal of depth about Cousins.  Well, this interview does just that.

You can read the interview here.  Feel free to offer comments below, or at Red94.

I know you tend to fall on the conservative side Tru, and that is one of the reasons

you are so good with this, but I honestly believe that DeMarcus is going to be All-Star talent in the NBA. He MIGHT also draw more technicals in a game than anyone except Rasheed Wallace, but he is a prototype NBA player in my book. He also has that quality in him that will make him an instant success with any team he joins…..he loves to be the funny man. The press is going to eat that up. If he plays his cards as they are dealt, and works hard, he will make himself the next Dwight Howard type player. With Shaq’s marketability

You might be right.

Reasonable people may differ on that.

But Cousins lacks the dynamic athleticism that most stars have in the NBA. He can’t be like Howard, because, quite frankly, he doesn’t have sufficient athleticism to be. Howard is carved from granite and has outstanding leaping ability from a standstill that Cousins does not possess, even at a full run.

I don’t think he possesses enough Shaq-like qualities to be that marketable, either. I suspect he will be more along the lines of a Kendrick Perkins (although more skilled) than a Shaq.

I am thinking like ABC on this one Tru

Grant it, Shaq’s college days as a Tiger seem long ago so I may have forgotten, but I don’t remember him eating up the press opportunities (at LSU) with the glasses, hats, missing teeth, and things like the famous “call me”. Memory refresher courses always welcome. :-)

And....not sure about it but,

Although I believe Shaq left college early to go to the NBA, I am certain he was there more than one year. I really think we would have seen a lot more “fun” from Big Cuz, if he had been here for more than one

Two to three years was the norm back then

He was a junior when he left LSU

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Howard

On the flip side Cousins is already a far more skilled basketball player than Howard is. Dwight is a physical specimen but there has been little improvement in his game over the past couple of seasons. Cousins already is far more technically skilled than Howard. I think he has a chance to be just as dominant albeit in a different manner than Howard is.

Agreed also

Howard’s game is 4-5 feet from the basket. He needs an outside shoot.

I think that's absolutely right.

Cousins has range to 20 feet at least, and has a decent handle for a guy his size, not to mention better footwork and even better hands than Howard has.

But Howard is a freak, and I mean that in the most sincerely flattering way, athletically. It is extraordinary to find guys his size with that kind of athleticism and physical strength.

If Cousins can learn to work around his lack of athleticism, he can be just as dominant.

I hope he gets a big

sports drink or shoe contract so we can be entertained by his acting ability in the corresponding commercials. :)

Calipari At Draft

Coach will be there to see his “children” graduate — and he’ll be sitting at Boogie’s table. BTW, said it previously, say it again: DeMarcus Cousins will be the dominant NBA center of the decade.

hey,

thanks for that, Weasel.

I was originally curious as which of our 5 were going to receive invites to New York and the Green Room (according to the article it’s just Wall, Cousins and Patterson?) and also curious as to who’s table coach was going to sit at. Under the circumstances I think he made an excellent choice and the reasons behind his choice are very admirable. This was good info in my book, so, thanks, again.
