The Big Blue Daily Mail -- Friday Night Edition
Stuff is flying around thick and fast. We have the committed but actually undecided Terrence Jones puzzling till his puzzler is sore. We have the Wear twins waving bye-bye to Ol' Roy, and some speculation that he may turn his baleful eye toward Portland and try to influence Jones, Sauron-like, to come all the way East instead of just most of the way.
Lots of fun. Enjoy, comment.

The clock has struck midnight for Cinderella Butler. Bulldogs star Gordon Hayward opts to stay in the NBA Draft and though he hates the move selfishly, Gary Parrish knows it is the right decision.
Flawlessly logical.

I like this. I think we should adopt this into our coaching contracts at Kentucky as well. For all I know, it is, but I haven't heard of it and I just wanted to say that I like the sound of it.
Asking that the coach pay some of his money into the scholarship fund ($100,000 seems like a good number) if the team APR is so low that the school loses athletic scholarships just seems like such a low threshold to meet. Just keep them in good standing, and you almost can't blow it. But if a coach does, I think he should pay.

Will John Wall equal or surpass Derrick Rose? | NBADraft.net
There's nothing John Wall can't do on a basketball court. His length and athleticism indicate that, with the proper focus, he could become an elite defender in the Gary Payton mold. His speed and court vision suggest he may run the fast break with the smoothness and precision of Jason Kidd. His jump shot is smooth enough to suggest he will improve on his 32.5 percent shooting from 3-point range in college.
Interesting comparison between Derrick Rose and John Wall. Worth a read.

According to his Twitter page, it appears he's still undecided about Washington and Kentucky.
Is Terrence Jones still interested in coming to UK? I doubt it, but Percy Allen is the guy to follow on this.

Thoughts On The Wear Twins’ Departure Jim Young
Maybe not. Perhaps there still are a few pickings out there. Not surprisingly some UNC fans are wondering whether the top undecided 2010 prospect - combo forward Terrence Jones - would consider the Tar Heels.

Nothing.
They can go to the school of their choice that will offer them a scholarship. An LOI is neither necessary nor required.

on till....
when he actually step onto the school campus, and start going to classes, as long as he is not signing anything…..it’s going to be a long ride for anyone following him
Its Jones' muddle,, not ours. let the kid make his decision
I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.
John Wall an elite defender?????
Potentially? Really? Did that writer even watch the WVa game?

With his athletic gifts ...
… he has that potential. Whether or not he ever realizes it is up to him..
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
yeah,
and playing defense in the NBA is totally optional, anyway. : )
I’m mostly kidding about that, and I think Wall did just fine on defense last year, maybe not spectacular, but like you said, he is capable of it if he puts his mind to it.
I also think he is probably being drafted more so on his spectacular offensive repertoire rather than his defense and since he’s likely to go #1, maybe he concentrated on all the right things last year? You know, showing his remarkable offensive skill set? His defense will come as he ages and matures and as his game evolves, I’m sure.
Btw, that Wall/Rose blurry visual alongside the article was pretty cool. I’m a sucker for good visuals. : )
Certainly.
However, the NBA is loaded with players with athletic gifts. Few are considered elite defenders. But to be fair, I think Cal was partly and maybe even primarily to be blamed for the back-up point guard going crazy on Wall during the WVa. It was Cal’s choice to play Wall the ‘entire’ game, running the point, leaning on him for offense, until the point of exhaustion.
For whatever the reason, in that game, Wall was completely undressed as a one-on-one defender by a vastly inferior guard.

Neither Jordan Or Kobe
Were drafted for their defensive talents but both developed into NBA All-Defensive players, look for the same from Wall.

Wow...to bad for JW.
Already comparing him to Kobe and Jordan?? Sheesh….give the kid a break.

Well i am sitting in Rupp at this very moment.
Besides that, I am ‘begging’ to give Wall a break. What’s anti about that?

Perhaps he watched the Vandy game and saw the game winning block.
One game does not make either a star or a failure.
Perhaps.
That was one of the 30+ regular season, ‘means little’ games, right?

For the love.
Stop criticizing Wall’s defense, will you?
Like you said, he led us to a 30+ win season after what had been a very long and dreary two years of UK basketball, he helped bring back the spark to the UK program and excitement to the fans, he was an outstanding representative for UK, and while it’s true that yes, that WV game was a big one, his defense alone did not lose that game for us, so don’t go acting like it did.
Many things contributed to that loss, thank-you-very-much, and although we didn’t win that game, there are 300-some schools in division 1 men’s basketball that didn’t even make it to the Elite 8 let alone bring home the national championship trophy, but there is only one school that got John Wall and I for one am quite pleased with his overall performance while in a UK uniform.
He will very likely go #1 in the upcoming draft, I happen to think he’ll be quite successful in the NBA and his name and talent will forever be tied to the University of Kentucky. When you take all those things into account in addition to what I mentioned in the above paragraph (bringing back the spark, leading us to 30+ wins, being a good representative of UK, etc, etc….), I think he did plenty for us last year and will continue to do plenty for us in the years to come and so I find your little dig about his collegiate defense just silly.
Sorry for the rant, but I think you are being overly and unnecessarily critical towards Wall and his defense today, I think it’s petty, and maybe it’s my mood today, but I just can’t sit idly by while you do it as I really like Wall. So there. : )

A lady scorned.
My fault. I apologize.
JW’s contribution to UK went past the court. He represented UK proudly. Very proudly. Even Achilles had a weak spot. It was Wall’s defense. That was intended to be my only point. Sorry.

Vitale says Orton, and Bledsoe are making a mistake.
They should return for one more year and play at UK. They will sit the bench if drafted, thus not making forward progress, he says. I have to agree with him in this case.
Probably true.
The part about sitting on the bench, that is. That’s their decision.
But they will get to practice against NBA players, get in a game once in awhile, and collect a nice paycheck. Almost everybody has to sit on the bench a while to pay their dues in the NBA, and to be fair, I don’t see either one of them coming into the NBA and making an impact their first year no matter how long they stay at UK.
So he’s right, but so what? It happens to almost everybody.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
I agree
but would like to add this. Most rookies in the NBA have to wait several seasons to earn any appreciable playing time at all. Prince was an exception. I know there are others but not often.

Dow - 1,000, NFP and NBA Draft
Once one considers and accepts that from the players’ perspective the NBA draft and the opportunity to earn more money than they ever dreamed is the prime motivation, then the decision is just as economically focused as the 1,000 point plunge in the Dow or the 290,000 increase in non-farm payroll.

Orton will probably get more playing time in the NBA next year than he had with UK last year.
And he won’t benefit by going against Cousins every day in practice. Where is the downside again on growing as a player?
'..when they bring a knife, you bring a gun...that's the Chicago way..'
It is only a mistake if you consider being paid high six figures a year to play basketball a mistake.
Wish I had some of those type of mistakes in my life.
So, How About Kadeem Jack?
If the Heels are actually considering (Rivals lists UNC interest as medium) Kadeem Jack as a last minute spot-filler on the front line, shouldn’t UK? He has offers from 3 SEC programs: Gators, Hawgs and Dawgs.

I kind of like the Dibo kid better.
He’s bigger and has one skill we can use right away — shooting.
Jack looks to me like a shorter version of Perry Stevenson — athletic, but limited.
Both would serve to put a bigger body on the floor, but in the DDM, I think Dibo is a better fit.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
With Orton definitely staying in the draft...
and the Georgia kid not committing, is this the Go button to UK that T. Jones pushes? Has he been waiting for Orton’s concrete decision before pulling the trigger? I think if he is coming here, we’ll know sooner rather than later, but maybe not!
That'd be great.
It would be nice to have 3 early commitments for 2011.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
But once again that impacts the 2010 recruiting ...
Don;t get me wrong – I would love to have Q. Miller – but we will have to hold on to some scholarships to give out to these 2011 guys. With only Harrellson a senior and Knight a one and done type – we have to be careful not to fill those future commitments … I’d hate to see a kid come in and then have to be “asked” out of his scholarship so a super star player can come in and take his floor time.
How many scholarships spots do you think we need to hold onto?
We have a minimum of three spots left this year and Harrelson is gone at the end of the season and probably Knight and Kanter. That makes six openings for next year.
Just saying it's a delicate situation ....
Lets assume that Knight and Kanter both leave early and of course Josh is gone – three openings are filled with Gilchrest, Teague, and probably Quincy Miller .. at the same time Liggins and Darius Miller will both be seniors. While Doron Lamb is a super soph…. I want to use our available scholarships – I just hate to see a kid like Darnell Dodson come here for one year and then move on to another program. (and I’m not sure why Dodson is waivering about coming back … )
Scholly math
Don’t count out Knight and Kanter. Kanter is probably gone, and Knight may be, but don’t discount the possibility of an NBA lockout forcing them both to stay.
Yep.
Makes sense to me especially since we don’t know as yet what UK’s penalty will be for the low GPA of 2.5. I assume that, that is too low to escape some sort of loss in scholarships. I’m not really up on this. Would someone else comment for my understanding? Thanks

No penalty likely.
As long as everyone who is leaving leaves in good standing, there will be no penalty.
