Cal

is EEVIL……..I laughed at that because we have always had likeable coaches but this is our first go around with a “hated” coach. Hmmm

Medcalf's article

in the StarTribune meanders on until he goes off the track in his final statement “But over time, hopefully, more schools such as Butler and Xavier will emerge, give us more thrillers and continue to crush the status quo.” People still are having a hard time understanding this year’s UK team was not the status quo.

And kudos to the baseball team. It took a good gut check to come back and beat the Cardinals after the stinker of a road trip to Arkansas last weekend.

Thanks for the Heads up Tru

Just a quick note. This article points out the "cold, hard facts. Since the beginning of time there have been guys listen to the wrong people and jump in(way over their heads). I hope this does not apply to any of ours. Since Fordes story some of the people he wrote about have caught on after playing in the D league. Good Luck to all!

Forde probably wishes he hadn't used Azubuike as an example of a man who never made it in the NBA.

’Bookie is already set for life.

He also overlooks the fact that some of these kids simply aren’t cut out for desk jobs, either emotionally or by reason of their lack of nativeintellect. In many of those cases he cites as failures, the kid’s earning potential in the non-NBA leagues is still much better than had he stayed in school (or tried his best to) and got a job selling mobile phones or insurance.

set for life?

how so?

to wit:

Up here in the diaspora I unfortunately call home (Cincinnati)
1. A few years ago Icky Woods was selling steaks out of his trunk.
2. And apologies, I don’t remember the Bengal player’s name, but that guy was on Hamilton County’s most wanted list for failure to pay child support last year.
3. and can we say Antoine Walker?

I post this because I worry our beloved players may be chasing rainbows that may soon disappear… or sucked dry by immaturity, family, and/or friends who come out of the woodwork hoping for a piece of the pot.

No matter where you're at, there you are

I am not much of a fan either

Giving Duke or Coach K any credit whatsoever is blasphemy to how I was raised.

I consider myself a true Pragmatist in the style of William James; except for when it comes to Duke.

In case you hadn’t heard, it is a known fact that Coach K has sold his immortal soul to El Diablo. It’s true.

Sure, Duke deserved to win.

But so did Butler. Had one contested, nearly good fade away gone in, Butler would have won. And you would have to admit that they would have deserved it. They won 25+ games in a row and held every opponent in the NCAA tourney to 61 points or less. When a game comes down to one good shot, either deserve whatever happens with that shot.

So yes – Coach K gets credit. Credit for sucking.

When I first saw that Dino picture, it looked like he was on a cell phone.

Then I thought, maybe that’s why he was fired. You probably shouldn’t take calls during the game.

Then I realized he didn’t have a cell phone. So I reckon he was fired because a plain yellow tie is boring.

The Duke thing.

I know it’s hard, but for me, I have to give Duke a ton of credit. They played well as a team, they were not obnoxious, really, at any time during the season, and they deserved to win.

I don’t object to people being impressed by Duke’s success this year. Unlike other years when it was much more controversial, there was nothing controversial about this Duke team. They played hard, behaved pretty much flawlessly, and did nothing at all to make me hate them more. Kudos to Duke — well done.

Butler gave them a fine game and if Hayward’s shot had gone in, I would give them the same props. They played well enough to win, also.

More reasons Duke sucks.

http://www.thefire.org/article/11730.html

Quote: "Duke University has instituted a new “sexual misconduct” policy that can render a student guilty of non-consensual sex simply because he or she is considered “powerful” on campus. … Women’s Center Director Ada Gregory was quoted in Duke’s student newspaper The Chronicle justifying the new policy, saying, “The higher [the] IQ, the more manipulative they are, the more cunning they are … imagine the sex offenders we have here at Duke—cream of the crop.” (In a follow-up letter to The Chronicle, Gregory claimed that the quote was inaccurate and did not reflect her views, but stood by her analysis that campuses like Duke are likely to harbor smarter sex offenders who are better able to outwit investigators.)"

Yes, at Duke, they are even elitist about their sexual misconduct. “Our rapists are smarter than your honor students” should be the slogan.

But I give props to the basketball team. I just hope they don’t abuse that power to seek sex.

by JackBluto on Apr 9, 2010 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Huh, makes me wonder what I used back in the day.

It certainly wasn’t my looks.

Remember, Duke was the university that found it fair and necessary for 88 faculty representatives to chime in on the "Lacrosse Rape’ with a letter of condemnation prior to fully investigating the crime. Disregard the Laettner stomp or shot. This act is enough to despise Duke.

From 2000 Through 2010 (11 Seasons)

Duke has 326 W – nearly 30 W average per season.

Despite limited NCAA success (“only” 2 NC and 3 FF those years), Duke has been stellar for 3 decades under Coach K.

Oh, No! Not Anomaly Again.

Who knows how many times the word anomaly has been posted on ASoB in last few days? Presumably you’re as tired of reading it as I, alas Mr. Medcalf’s piece and his reliance on the anomalous nature of the season just completed to reach a rather dubious conclusion obligates me to comment.

By relying on the aberrant success of Cornell and Butler — an Ivy League program reaching the Sweet Sixteen and a Horizon League member reaching the championship game certainly qualifies as aberrant — not to mention the incongruity of lumping Duke, a recognized hoops blue-blood , with the two outliers, plus linking the once-in-history of 4 UK one-and-dones, Medcalf falls prey to the subterfuge of defining a trend and labeling it pernicious based on anomalies.

Compounding the mendacity Medcalf omits — perhaps for lack of space but I would say because it belies his conclusion — the fact that recent past champions have all had highly paid coaches, available private jets and a roster full of highly ranked recruits. Difference was that circumstances allowed those recruits to remain a student athlete for a couple more years.

Proving once again that jumping to conclusions and throwing assumptions against a wall hoping one or two will stick is pure folly.

Please also note that Butler rode in on two sophomores: Hayward and Mack

not on seniors, as the article implies. I do give credit for those at Butler who were smart enough to see that Hayward and Mack were undervalued recruits (byTubby and BCG, among others).

And Duke’s roster is FULL of High School All American types.

by rockymiller on Apr 9, 2010 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Mack Is Soph (HS Class Of 2008)

Gillispie was UK coach then. Tubby left in 2007.

Neither coach ever heard of Hayward in HS.

by FortyYearCatFan on Apr 9, 2010 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Tubby had the opportunity to recruit Mack.

He did not. Billy G did at one point, but it was too late.

by JackBluto on Apr 9, 2010 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Not Accurate

He left UK in March 2007.

Mack graduated HS in May 2008.

Recruiting generally starts before the senior year unless I'm mistaken

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

For The Top Rated Players, Yes

Not for local “sleepers” though.

Gillispie missed the boat on him.

by FortyYearCatFan on Apr 10, 2010 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe

But I bet that if he had signed with Gillispie we wouldn’t have thought much more of him than Michael Porter and he would have struggled for playing time behind Wall and Bledsoe this year (or even encouraged to transfer in the “Great Roster Purge of 2009”) leading us to wonder why we were shackled with another underperforming Kentucky kid on our roster.

Its the same way I felt about Chris Lofton. He never would have had the success under Tubby or Billy G that he experienced in Knoxville.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

Lofton, Yes

Both UK and U of L (the latter was his preferred choice as HS junior) missed the boat on him.

Porter was 3X All-Stater in Calif and well regarded by West Coast schools.

by FortyYearCatFan on Apr 11, 2010 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm sorry Forty.

No sale on that one. I don’t hold it against Tubby, but no sale.

He knew well about Mack, and Mack’s profile was rising before he left.

To Each His Own

UK had 3 scholarships to give in 2008.

One was committed to Draymond Green (UK verbal but now at Mich St).

Another to big man – would have been Ralph Sampson or Kenny Frease.

Mack was not very highly rated in 2007 as HS junior. He moved up the charts in 2008 as HS senior.

Gillispie missed the boat in 2008. He opted for JuCo recruits instead.

What Butler's success shows is that moderately-talented

people, PLAYING AS A TEAM, can have occasional success against their more talented opponents. Picks, passes, and hustle can provide a chemistry that elevates a team’s performance above what would be expected. These guys knew each other and the synergy that resulted was neat to see. Would any of them started for any of the blue-blood teams? Not that I can see. But, together they almost pulled off a miracle. I liked watching them because they played basketball.
