NCAA Tournament Expectations

I am curious to gauge what your expectations are for UK in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.  In other words, how far would they need to go for you to say it was a successful tournament.  I know we are all UK fans and expect/believe that they will win it all.  After all, UK probably has the most talented team yet a very inexperienced team.  Not one of the starters have played in an NCAA tournament game. I really don't think that will matter all that much though because they are all so talented.

My expectations are for them to reach the Final Four.  Anything less would be pretty disappointing.  A final 8 wouldn't be awful.  Just make the Final Four and take their chances.  I would be distraught if they were to flame out in the first three rounds.  I still get sick when I think about UK losing to UAB several years ago.

So how about it?  What are your minimum expectations for this years tournament?

the fact

that this is even a good question makes my heart warm and fuzzy. How I’ve missed that question. Not since that bull**it MSU game have we been able to temper hopes with actual legitimate potential. Even that team was overachieving. Since I’ve been old enough to actually watch these games with any sort of historical reference point, (and even a little before) I’ve been grasping at the best thing I saw and hoping to God it was a flash of things to come (Jodi had me calling everybody I knew and telling them “see I told you we’re better than out record” after embarrassing UT). Love love love having this conversation again without wondering who I’m trying to kid.

#1 Seed Means 3+ W In UK Experience

I’d say 4+ W in NCAA this year.

FF (or better).

Regional finals

As far as I’m concerned this season has already been a resounding success. They certainly have the talent to win it all and I think they’ll have a decent chance at making the Final Four. We’re so young that I don’t want to have expectations that are too high. Having said that, at this point I’d be a little disappointed if we didn’t get to the regional finals.

Elite 8

Was 1986 a resounding success? Perhaps. Compared to 1985 it was. But that team had FF talent and experience levels.

Was 2005 a resounding success? Or 1995? I’d say Not Really.

Elite Eight

I think this team is at least in the top eight teams of the country and should make it to the regional finals. Then it will depend on who we match up with and how much each team wants it.

At 53 it's hard for me sometimes to remember

what I did yesterday so I’ve not had any problem putting the last 4+ years way in the rear view mirror. Many seem to be just “happy”…..I’m not going to use giddy again a2;-)…..that we’re back in the national conversation and have cut this team a lot more slack than I think they deserve.

“But we’re so young” is the common refrain…..frankly I subscribe to the “to those who much is given, much is expected” camp. Wall, Cousins and company have been playing AAU games against high level competition for years not counting 31 games in college…..the “we’re so young” thing just isn’t an excuse anymore.

As many unbiased observers have pointed out, we have the most talented 1-5 of any school out there. If this team doesn’t make the final 4 then in my mind it will have been a stunning waste of these young men’s talent and ability.

WHAT JM ?!?!?! LOL ;-)

But as far as this post….I had one expectation coming into the season and it has been met so far, so I am sticking to it. I want the guys to have FUN !! I am only a fan, they are the ones working hard.

Well after the last 2 years.....having more fun wasn't really that big

a goal now was it??:-) They probably had more fun at any visit to the dentist than the last 2 years.

One thing I’ve always noticed in watching sports over the years…..the team cutting down the nets or charging the mound to hoist up the pitcher…..always seem to be having the most fun!!!;-)

53? 53, you say?

I don’t even remember when I was 53, and neither does the other oldcat, and neither does wineman, for that matter. Now, I DO remember that the last four years were disappointing and this year has not been. Those things I remember.

It’s ALWAYS a one-game disappointment when UK loses in the NCAA Tournament. Always. But, what would it take for the tournament as a whole to be a disappointment? Not getting to the Elite Eight would be a disappointing tournament, IMO. So, Elite Eight=fully successful; Final Four=highly successful; final game=exceptionally successful; NC=outstandingly successful.

That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it.

Hey, speak for yourself

oldcat. I remember 53 as clearly as yesterday. It was my first bottling of wine. But after the bottling we started drinking the wine and I don’t remember anything since then.

I have really enjoyed UK being

significant again. With that said, I think UK is a very good team in a not so good conference. I would be shocked if UK won the NCAA tourney but would be very disappointed if we didn’t get to the final eight. A Final Four after what we were experincing last year at this time should make me ecstatic and if it doesn’t, I should just shoot myself.

Im staying the same.

This question was asked preseason in a poll on here by Tru, I think. I would love to see those results vs. another poll result now. I am sticking with what I said then. An SEC championship and a sweet Sixteen would be a successful season for me and everything else would be gravy. After languishing in the prior four years of irrelevance, frustration, and going to the NIT last year this is quite an accomplishment. Don’t get me wrong, I think this team can go farther and do much better, but I can live with my preseason feelings of the Sweet Sixteen.

Gonna have to agree with you here...

Sweet 16 is just about as much of a turn-around as you can expect for any team, considering we were an NIT-caliber team last year. Now, is that what I hope for?? Not really, I think we make an EE game, with a really good chance of a FF. And in reality, winning the SECT would be a plus up from last year, with only a win or two in the NCAA… YMMV
