Experience Versus Youth: Taking a Look
Recently this debate has surfaced with some concerns for our next few games. We have discussed our team's youthful talent from time to time and their lack of a lot of experience. We know both can be a factor in winning games. We have seen where experience may have crushed our opponent a time or two, but we can't say for sure. And we have seen a lot of heart and will by our young, talented guys be the factors in winning games. Our guys have shown us their refuse-to-lose mentality most of the time. I don't think one can put a measurement on heart and will-to-win. But if you want to look at a couple of things in the vicinity of experience vs youth, we can do that too.
Here is an article titled Experience vs. Youth from a Villanova blog written this past October. It lists the early favorites for the 2010 Championship and has their experience factor (returning players minutes played). As far as I know, it is a decent look of where things stand in that category. Purdue ranks highest among this year's top ten pick's with 11,990. Kansas came into this season totaling 11,871. UNC (the 2009 champs had 14,265 minutes last year entering into the season), this year only 6,386. Our very young Wildcats owned an exp factor of 6,350 to start (less than the Tarheels). Texas only logged an exp factor of 5,011 coming into the season. I think we probably would give the Jayhawks or the Boilermakers (both almost double our exp factor) a great match-up. I don't believe I have lone rights to that thought. NOTE: The above link doesn't have experience minutes for Syracuse this season. A quick check lists general starters as 2 seniors, 2 juniors and 1 freshman this season.
I also found this article Sports of The Times; In Experience vs. Youth, It's the Talent That Wins discussing said debate. It is a little dated, back to April 2003, but it discusses when Jim Boeheim's young team out-shined (only down 1 for seconds, early in the game) the more-experienced Jayhawks. Young 'Cuse finished that season 30-5, winning this last game. That is always a requirement to be National Champs, after all. Roy Williams' experienced KU went 30-8 that year.
Breaking these two down, the 2002-03 Orangemen had just one senior, Duany. He was joined by junior McNeil, sophomores Warrick (he had a huge block), Forth, and Pace. And freshmen, Anthony (3rd freshman in history named MOP), McNamara and Edelin. The Jaywhawks had two seniors, Henrich and Collison. Other starters for Kansas were juniors Bryant and Graves, sophomores Langford, Lee and Miles. Kansas probably was the more experienced team of the two but that wasn't enough for the title.
Now let us return back to the present and list our youth. Our Wildcats regular starters are (you know these guys) freshmen John, DeMarcus and Eric, sophomore Darius and junior PPat. Off the bench (those seeing the most playing time) we have sophomores DeAndre and Darnell, another freshman Daniel and seniors Perry and Ramon.
I think there is no doubt we are a young team. Can our youthful talent excel and advance far, maybe win it all, in the Big Dance? Most feel we have the talent. We know they have the will-to-win. One big plus is they have gained a bit of experience along this 190 Miles to Glory aspiration. Coach says it hasn't been just for fun-sies, you know. The fact is, Indy has some strings they are striving to acquire. Go Big Blue !!!

No doubt
we are an extremely young team but every game adds to experience and they certainly have found themselves in a lot of different circumstances throughout the season. They have handled most of them well enough to win and hopefully will be better prepared to face the tougher opposition ahead of them. At first, upon seeing the road the Cats will likely face in the SEC tourney, I thought what a bad draw but then I realized that the gauntlet they must run is the final rung on the ladder to the NCAA tourney. Win or lose, they will emerge from the tourney more experienced and ready to make a run at #8. Some wonder if they have the heart for this. Remember it is #8 for us but #1 for them and for some, their only shot at it. I know they will leave nothing on the court. Good piece, a2d2.
Thanks wineman,
Oh, it can be done. We might be holding our breath during some games, but we might not. Some teams want it, but I think our guys want it bad. This SEC tourney will help a lot. I think our 2000th win gave them a sense of what it would feel like for them to win the big title. They know how they felt and they saw how we cheered. One reason they came to UK was because of the greatest fans in the world. :-)
Blue... there is no other color to Bleed !!!
I'm excited about the prospects
even if they dissapoint us, they will never fail us. We will do well!
"all the way"
We will do well ro,
But I have to say the reverse. Even if they fail, they will never disappoint me. And I am sure that doesn’t surprise you. :-)

vs youth...
my time doesn’t allow me to see the other teams out there, and am sure there are some really strong programs today…but i easily recognize the different types of “game” these kids have faced and conquered…they DON’T give up…they DO WANT IT ALL, BAD!!!…and i believe they will make us and themselves proud and bring #8 back to Lexington!!!
"Get your facts first, then you can distort them as much as you please."...Mark Twain.
I have seen very little of the other teams myself
I just think our guys don’t intend on giving up. I truly hope they realize playing their best for 40 minutes should take care of that intent.

I like experience in my basketball teams .....and youth in my women.....lol......

I personally will take talent over experience any
day and I think our recent past shows that. Tubby had some experienced teams that probably played above their talent level……until they met talent in the form for example of Dwayne Wade. All the experince in the world couldn’t stop him.
When people talk about “experience”….what they usually mean is decision making. Wall, Cousins and company have played 31 college games plus countless AAU or similar games against high level competition. Will they make mistakes in the tournament? Sure, but we can only hope that their decision making assisted by Cal’s coaching rises to the level of their natural ability.
You can't fix "stupid"!
I think they know they need to increase their decision making skills

Baloney About The Dwayne Wade Comment
Kansas beat him (and Marquette) by 30 the very next game.
A healthy UK team would have defeated Marquette (in 2003) more often than not.
UK’s 2003 team had TALENT also. 4 players made the NBA – Bogans, Hayes, Fitch, Daniels.
The 2004 and 2005 teams ALSO had TALENT. Not just experience.

I gotta agree with that one......Bogans was the heart and soul of that team. His going down to injury, (although he played as gutsy as one can)
is what cost the Cats that year. Wade is a good player, dont get me wrong…..but he wasnt take out a whole team good.

You mean a player not being healthy
could have an impact on the result of a game? Hmmmm.
