Kentucky Basketball Recruiting: Enes Kanter [Turkey] Commits to UK

Matt Jones is reporting at Kentucky Sports Radio that Turkish big man Enes Kanter, a late-blooming recruit from Turkey, has committed to Kentucky.  More as we know it.

  • Jodie Demling on Enes Kanter

Kanter had originally committed to Washington but re-opened the process. He's projected as one of the top 15 picks in the 2011 NBA Draft.

    Wow.

Good Job Cal.....

nice addition down low. Next up CJ Leslie, Terrence Jones and Brandon Knight.

Now that would be some serious reloading.

If Cal

corrals Knight (which I think he will) and Leslie (not so sure), and retains Bledsoe (which I think he will) and Orton (I definitely think he will) then UK should be loaded again next year:

PG – Knight, 2-G – Bledsoe, SW – Miller, SW – Dodson, SW – Poole, C – Orton, SW – Hood, F -Leslie, 3 -Liggins, 4/5 – Kanter, 3/4 – Harralson.

sounds good....

i do not expect bledsoe or orton to go, but i also would not be surprised either…

Wouldn't be shocked if Orton left,

mildly surprised, though.

I would be shocked if Bledsoe left.

by Ken Howlett on Mar 23, 2010 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

what makes it an interesting dynamic

is the lack of true big men in college that are nba types.

i would like to think orton could be a potential #1 pick next year if he came back. if he spends another summer in CA and has bledsoe, knight, etal, feeding him in the post, i would not be surprised if his numbers were comparable to cousins (although it would probably take more minutes to get there). i do not watch a ton of college basketball, but i am hard pressed to think of another 5 i would take ahead of orton (certainly not aldrich of KU).

the other factor is injury – big guys (too me) seem more injury prone – so he might leave now if a projected lottery pick (which is uncertain at this point).

It also depends on who else Cal signs. i do not believe orton ever totally accepted his 2nd string role – if he had any doubt that he would start, he might move on.

alot of moving parts but both bledsoe and orton seem like well grounded kids so my bet would be that they would come back (much like ppat did for this year).

Orton reminds me of Andruw Bynum of the Lakers....

in terms of size, body-type and overall game. He may even be more athletic.

You and I are thinking along the same lines regarding Orton

He could be a top-5 pick next year if he continues on his current arc. But, with big men being a premium in the NBA, he might be tempted to leave this year. And of course, he endured a serious knee injury while in hs, which may, or may not play in to his decision.

Bledsoe just needs more work, and I’m sure that’s what Cal will tell him.

by Ken Howlett on Mar 23, 2010 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting that you still see Bledsoe as a 2 guard to Knight ...

I think it may be the other way around (Knight at the 2) since Eric would also have the experience on his side … but in either case I would love to have a Bledsoe/Knight backcourt.

by ukcris on Mar 23, 2010 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions

If they both play at UK next year

I would be very surprised if Knight isn’t the 1 and Bled the 2 regardless of experience. But who knows?

by Ken Howlett on Mar 23, 2010 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

If Bledsoe leaves

that will greatly (negatively) impact next year’s team, I feel. Think that will persude him to stay if he’s actually pondering leaving? :)

by Ken Howlett on Mar 23, 2010 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

KSR reporting that Florida

has dropped B. Knight from their recruiting list. That’s always good news.

I have watched alot of video on him and he looks stronger and a better perimeter shooter than Wall. Now don’t get crazy and suggest I am saying he is better than Wall overall….lol

Plus he wears #11 in high school which is good because then I will not need to go out and buy another jersey.

by SevenRings on Mar 23, 2010 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Knight would be the 2 in that scenario.

He is more of a combo guard than a pure point.

A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan

by Glenn Logan on Mar 23, 2010 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Knight a combo?

I think his ball-handling + his other point skills puts him in front of Bledsoe within the context of next year’s team. Also, why burden Bledsoe with running the team? He just needs to play D and shoot.

wklawdog — Lamb is a long-shot.

Regardless, it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

by Ken Howlett on Mar 23, 2010 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, he is a bit like a better Kenny Boynton.

Knight is a good ballhandler, but his forte is shooting and scoring. I’m thinking Cal would move Bledsoe to the point, and the taller Knight to the 2. It makes sense, and it isn’t as if Knight has to play there all the time — Bledsoe surely doesn’t — but Knight’s bigger size and better shooting skills argue more for him at the off-guard, and moving Bledsoe back to the lead.

A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan

by Glenn Logan on Mar 24, 2010 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

bledsoe

I think that the only thing that would keep bledsoe here next yr is that he would want to prove himself as THE guy to run the show. Bledsoe, knight, lamb…………nice rotation out front. :)

Bledsoe is projected as a lottery pick now

I think he’s gone.

Of course its difficult, its a shortcut... if it was easy it'd just be "the way."

by chirop1 on Mar 23, 2010 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

NBA Draft.net

doesn’t have Bledsoe listed in the first two rounds of their 2010 mock draft, but he’s listed #4 in the 2011 mock. Of course, if he explodes in the rest of the tourney, that could change.

by Ken Howlett on Mar 23, 2010 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Chad Ford at ESPN has him up at #14 right now.

I’d imagine if Bledsoe continues to play the way he has recently, that would be about right. He goes if that’s the case.

If he continues to play like he did in the first two rounds and we win a national championship, I won’t mind at all (-:

by BBallSophist on Mar 23, 2010 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

NBA Draft.net is a better source than the individuals.

I cannot believe that Bledsoe is a lotter pick. He is playing better, but as recently as Alabama he continued his overpenetration tendency leading to turn overs. I do not think he is ready to play point on an NBA team.

by JackBluto on Mar 24, 2010 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I doubt very much ...

… if Bledsoe will even be a first-rounder if he comes out this year.

Some of these guys are a little over the top.

A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan

Bledsoe

depends on the feedback and interest he gets if he continues to play so well as the tourney progresses. Mock drafts are pretty worthless but there are reports that he is really helping himself out right now. I wouldnt be surprised at all to see both Bledsoe and Orton leave if they move up into the upper two thirds of the first round.

Totally opposite here, Ken.

If Bledsoe is a lottery pick and Wall and Cuz leave, in no way would I be shocked to see him leave. I would totally be more suprised to see Orton go than Bledsoe.

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

by kentuckygirl0724 on Mar 24, 2010 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

My thinking

Orton will possibly be looked at by NBA teams as an investment. There is a huge premium on big men in the NBA, and they are, even more than non-bigs, drafted on potential, and Orton has a ton of it.

Guards, such as Bledsoe, are generally looked at as guys who can come in and contribute quickly, and I don’t think Bledsoe is ready to do that, and in the end, I don’t see an NBA GM pulling the trigger in the first round for a layer like Bled. Plus, at the pro level he will be a point, not a 2. And he’s not played the position with regularity since, well, who knows when. SInce there is a real possiblity that if he came back he would be playing point a large amonunt of the time; that experience could help him immensely, raising his stock.

But I think both will make solid pros, but neither is ready for it, but that’s not always a criteria taken into consideration.

And never oversestimate the intelligence of an NBA GM. Past drafts are littered with bad picks, and just plain dumb moves.

by Ken Howlett on Mar 25, 2010 1:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Good points, Ken.

Orton is definitely an investment. His shot-blocking ability improves every game. I soooo want him back next year!! :)

Terrence Jones

He would also be a great “get”. 6’8" hybrid power/small forward. He is ranked 20th by Scouts and 13th by Rivals overall.

It is UK versus a bunch of West Coast type schools. Being from Oregon he may want to stay closer to home. Who really knows about that though.

Hope you’re right, ken. I read an interview with orton(cant remember where i read it now, damn its a b**ch getting old) and he said if UK wins it all that he’d seriously consider going pro.

by bigbill992001 on Mar 23, 2010 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't imagine Cal giving Orton his blessing, even if UK wins it all

But, coaches are in a bit of a catch-22 when it comes to players wanting to leave, when the coach knows full well he isn’t ready:

If the coach doesn’t fully support the player’s efforts, and the kid ends up coming back, then hard feelings are possible. Making for a potentially uncomfortable relationship, which no one wants. But if the player can be convinced to not investigate the possibility, which I imagine would be a difficult conversation, and many times includes the coach’s NBA contacts, then the scenario becomes much more tenable.

Kanter has been on the scene for a while, but he’s from Switzerland, and he’s been playing in Turdey prior to arriving in the US. Hoopmasters Says (Clipped)

March 23, 2010
Kentucky adds Euro big man for 2010

John Calipari and his Kentucky staff have added the first piece to their spring recruiting in Enes Kanter.

According to a source close to the program and confirmed by the Courier Journal, the Kentucky Wildcats have added the first piece of their spring recruiting puzzle with the addition of 6-10 240-pound Enes Kanter who has been prepping at Simi Valley, CA Stoneridge Prep.

Kanter, a 17-year old senior, originally committed to Washington, but decided to open up his recruiting in February and has been focused on Kentucky for some time. Especially since both Patrick Patterson and DeMarcus Cousins could be heading on to the NBA. This will leave Kanter and returning freshman Daniel Orton as the inside-duo next year for the Wildcats.

Before heading to the USA to play, Kanter was the U18 European Championships MVP scoring 18.6 points and pulling down 16.8 rebounds a game for the Turkish National squad.

He has had one game this past winter where he scored 50 points and pulled downh 20 rebounds. Last weekend, he put up 24 points and 18 rebounds versus Findlay Prep and Texas signee Tristan Thompson. He is currently our No.16 rated senior, but could move up in our final ratings.

He is joins Stacey Poole in the Kentucky Class of 2010.

I like that they mention Orton in the write-up.

and I wouldn’t mind seeing some more of that just to help Orton make a decision to stay. Being a UK fan it’s hard to not be selfish in wanting the best for my team, but like many of you, I think it would help Orton in the long run. If he didn’t like sitting the bench this year, he’d be sitting a lot more next year in the NBA.

Pending 2011 NBA Lockout may effect Bledsoe and Orton's Decision?

1. It might be good to get one year’s salary in before a long lockout. If both stay for their sophomore year, they may have to wait a while for that first NBA paycheck.
2. A 2010 contract may actually be more lucrative than one negotiated after the 2011 (or 2012?) CBA. As you folks know, Stern and the owners are stressing budget cuts this time around.

Reportedly, Texas freshman, Avery Bradley may already be thinking in these terms
http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2010/03/texas-frosh-bradley-undecided-on-nba-dra.html

Thoughts on this…? I have not found much press on the potential 2011 lockout’s effect on this years early entry class.

No matter where you're at, there you are

by cincyblue on Mar 24, 2010 4:17 AM EDT reply actions

that has been in the back of my mind as well

i do believe it will play a role. hard to believe the owners and players will get to a point of a lockout, but it would not surprise me.

was sort of thinking (hoping) that it might make more sense at this point to stay around in a program such as uk’s for another year rather than make the jump and then have the season shut down. for some reason, i was thinking the lockout, if it comes, could be this summer or fall. if that is the case, bledsoe and orton would be making a mistake of leaving and then having to sit while things got settled.

only one rule in my house - uk has to be your favorite college bball team

by memphis wildcat on Mar 24, 2010 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions

I have been saying that for a while as to Cuz and Wall and PPat.

It could eeasily affect everyone’s decision considering a jump. The problem though is that the more players that think that, they will crowd each other out. There are only so many first round picks.

by JackBluto on Mar 24, 2010 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

My brother-in-law and I were discussing this last night

I think it could be a major factor. The NBA needs to clean this up pronto and not suffer from self-inflicted wounds like baseball did. A millionaires lockout in the middle of a recession won’t play well, I’d bet.

by Acdixon on Mar 24, 2010 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions

This is a very interesting,

and given our current crop of potential early departures, it’s something I, and probably most UK fans I would think, will be keeping an eye on in the next few months.

Like memphis mentioned, I also find it hard to believe that the players/agents and owners would get to a lockout point, but if my memory serves the players/agents pretty much ripped up the contract that was proposed a month or so ago, so they may just stand their ground and not give in to Stern, who knows?

I’m not sure about the lockout timing, but like cincy mentions above, the mentality that the college athletes should go this year before the veterans/agents/Stern/owners have a chance to cut the sky-high rookie salaries (which is a hot-topic for this current CBA, as I understand it?) and the thinking that by going now, and if money is their main motivation, the rookies could still get in on a ridiculously high-priced contract might take hold. Get it while the gettin’ is good, if you will?

But, as JackBluto notes (and it’s a very good point, btw) — there are only so many first round/guaranteed money picks available. I know Wall, Cousins and Patterson will have no problem getting in the first round if they so choose, but are Bledsoe and Orton ready to command first round money over some of the others that might be in a rush to declare? At present, I would say no.

I think it’s awesome and so uniquely UK-fan of us that some might especially adore Cousins, or Patterson, or Gillispie, or Tubby or whoever (uh, Pitino might be an exception, though). Mild, completely innocuous, not-at-all-creepy obsession is kind what we do around here ; )

Nice Not-So-Subtle Gillispie Reference

Funny. There have been quite a few of your posts that come across kind of rude to me -speaking fully on my own behalf here. Guess so long as they are marked with the winky smiley it should be all good though. ;)

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.

No oldcat

I was referring to the

I know what it’s like to have to read post after post written by someone who is obsessing over a player or coach, so I really did try ever so hard not to get to the annoying stage

section of the post. It really doesnt matter and I honestly wish I had just never commented in the first place as that is a sort of silent committment I have made to myself on issues such as this many times before but for whatever reason continue to do so.

No worries – we’re cool. :)

I sure wish the basketball

game was starting. Folks gettin’ awfully testy waiting for the tip-off. Take a chill pill, we’re all on the same side.

Ha!

That was cute, hoboat, you are so right, and I really wish the game was starting, too! But, thankfully, it won’t be long now. Something like 12 hours and change? : )

Who would have known that a conversation between myself and ABC would turn into, well, all of "this", and for that I really do apologize, sorry all. ABC, I trust we can still watch a game or two together in the future? ; )

Pronunciation is a big topic on UK message boards

All sorts of how and whys. Here is one

I work with a guy from Astonia, he told me you pronounce it as:

“N-S” (just like you are saying the letters n s)

“Cont-uh”

Enes Kanter = “N-S Cont-uh”

a2

I just read that story about the NCAA having to approve an amendment to allow him to play without sitting out games. That makes me think that Enes probably will not play part of or all of next year. I can’t see them voting for us to be able to use him. Most will vote NO just out of spite.

I know oc70

I try to not get into seeing stars with recruits until they suit up. I am a fan year round, but IF someone else has to make a decision about a kid, I choose to wait and see what happens. And a lot can change, always.

Agree to a point A2 ...

Like you I follow the Cats year round … the one recruit I have to make an exception for is John Wall. When we were recruiting him and it seemed like he would go from school to school to school … I knew from his videos that this was a special player. I mean you can watch other guys make spectacular plays … a block, a dunk, a three – a pretty move to the hoop … but with Wall it was like everyone around him was in slow motion – anyone could see he would be a game changer and he hasn’t disappointed.

Sounds like the starting line for a dirty limerick.

by kywineman on Mar 25, 2010 8:10 AM EDT up reply actions

maybe after the dance is over

this could be become a fanpost in some shape or fashion. I suspect it will become an issue as more analysis surfaces. Even the second round, non-guaranteed draft picks are going to be weighing this closely. In 2011, there may not even be an NBA to go to, salary-wise, for a while. Better to get your foot in the door, as it were??

No matter where you're at, there you are

by cincyblue on Mar 24, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Right

because it’s not just a matter of possibly smaller contracts in the future, but the possibility that if a player doesn’t go in this draft, they might be waiting two more years, then coming out in a crowded draft for lower salaries.
