Samantha Ryan's Lawyer Threatens Kentucky Sports Radio

I simply have no words for this.

Seriously, I simply cannot fathom an attorney, in total sincerity, threating a website that made a rebuttal to a video that Samantha Ryan posted about Kentucky on a Kansas website.

Leaving to the side the the risible (in my opinion) suggestion that the defamation of a pornographic film actress is actually possible (talk about your all-time oxymorons), the act of threatening a defamation lawsuit amounts to little more than a SLAPP threat against a light-hearted post clearly made in jest (and clearly an opinion, which, as such, was not really actionable as defamation).  All this notwithstanding the fact that Samantha is a public figure (made so by her ... ahem ... profession).   I cannot imagine anything more absurd popping into my brain if I injected myself with multiple large doses of LSD.

What this lawyer did is beneath contempt, and while I don't blame Matt for simply complying (albeit in a typically, and justifiably snarky way), part of me wishes he had responded with a big, fat, "Bring it on, big boy.  No juevos if you don't."

Rather than tar all Jayhawk fans with this absurdity (tempting, but still the wrong thing to do), I'll just leave it to the reader to puzzle over, as well as this in consideration of Samantha's peerless moral standing.

Rather have Ashley Judd promoting my team than some porn star ....

That ought to go over big with all of the recruits mom’s who are considering Kansas

by ukcris on Mar 23, 2010 4:44 AM EDT reply actions

Yep.

People across the country know who Ashley Judd is. I had no idea who Samatha Ryan was until it was explained above.

That lawyer was just trying to get publicity

The best part

The lawyer said she didn’t drink bourbon and wanted a retraction……..she is used to taking shots, just not of bourbon…….

Just another example of how the cumulative daily acts of thousands of would-be Perry Masons have fashioned America into the great country that it is today.

The one thing she can’t take…is a joke!

by aidanpryde18 on Mar 23, 2010 9:37 AM EDT reply actions

As an attorney, I was blown away by the stupidity,

and believe me people, you don’t know stupid until you’ve seen what I’ve seen on a regular basis. My only thought is that it was done with a desire to get more publicity and video hits (as someone above suggested).

by wklawdog on Mar 23, 2010 9:38 AM EDT reply actions

Exactly what I think

But it is still funny. I wonder if a KY blog was the only one to have a little fun with it??

Agree totally with you wkld...

How on earth would you put on proof for that lawsuit? Defamation? Who would her character witnesses be? I really cannot fathom a suit like that standing—it surely would be dismissed as frivolous! But, of course, we are in the Bible belt and that lawyer was from Cali—so we are talking about 2 different worlds (and apparently 2 different rules of law).

You can take the girl out of Kentucky, but you can't take KENTUCKY out of the girl!

if publicity was the intention

Ms Ryan’s got a dumber publicist than lawyer.
I googled for news articles, and found no stories on this.

No matter where you're at, there you are

I saw this last night...

and was stunned at the thought that any lawyer could be that bad. I was just a little disappointed that Matt didn’t call their bluff.
