CBS: Tubby to Auburn

Star-divide

Saw this while perusing the destruction of the bracket that I filled out on CBS Sports. I think this would be interesting to say the least. I've heard rumors about him and the Oregon job, but this is the first time I've seen him linked to another SEC school.

Personally, I'm all for it. And I for one would cheer him the first time he brought them to Rupp.....if this happens. You can question Tubby the coach/recruiter.....but you can never question Tubby the man.

Oh

my!!!!! Well that shocks me! I don’t see him returning to the SEC. Auburn is not a place that will be successful until they get better facilities. I am not sure that is a good move.

I would love to see him there.
The SEC needs to find some good to great coaches to put in place in their basketball programs. The losses yesterday by Florida and Vanderbilt show that we certainly aren’t a ‘basketball’ conference.
The status of a Tubby Smith would bring recognition that a school is trying to improve, and be just a diversion until spring practice.
Tennesseee made the step so why shouldn’t Auburn?

I would pay money to see UK-AU if he comes.

And for the record, I think he could win big at Auburn. It’s a tough job, but it’s not impossible. Especially in what is right now a Wild, Wild, and wide open Western Division.

All the best

I have always and will continue to wish Tubby and Donna the best of luck in their endeavors. I highly respect him as a coach and as a gentlemen.

I will never forget the day I heard that he was leaving. I was so upset because I didn’t feel that we (as in the Big Blue Nation) had given him the respect that he deserved. I still feel that way. It might have been (and hindsight tends to suggest that it was) the right time for him to leave, but I wish our fan base had been more dignified in sending him off.

If he does end up coaching an SEC team, I will make sure I get tickets to that game. I will stand and applaud as he enters the arena. Then cheer loudly for my Cats to dismantle his team.

Tubby’s only reason not to take the job is he’s too honorable to walk out on players he may have promised he’d be there. He’s turned around a program who’s major sport is ice hockey and gone further in the BIg 10 tournament than they’ve ever been before. Three twenty wins seasons, etc.

Tubby was a great recruiter.......

Are you kidding me? If anything, Tubby just didn’t get the most out of his recruits. Mostly his style of play and maybe a little lack of a motivator, but the man could recruit. The only reason Tubby wasn’t a god in this state was because BBN was spurned by Pitino leaving and Tubby was always compared to Pitino. Well, I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again. Pitino is/was not that great of a coach. Not even on the same level with Tubby. Pitino just was in the right place at the right time, and happened to bring his press with him. If Pitino was so great, UL would be better. Look at what Tubby has done in 3 years at a hockey school. I would LOVE to have Tubby coaching in the SEC, but I hope for Minn’s sake he stays the course.

So Forty...

How many recruits did Ricky P. have go to the NBA in his years at KY. I cant find that stat. How many recruits of Tubbys came to KY and left? Tubby couldnt recruit the A list players. He did an exceptional job at coaching up what he had, but he didnt get the guys that would put us over the top.

by UKTimmy on Mar 19, 2010 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure U Can (Jon Scott)

Pitino put none from Boston U into NBA. One from Providence. He put (about) 12 at UK into NBA. And a few from Louisville, not many.

About the same as Tubby – average of 1 per year.

Pitino recruited 5 “A” list players (McDonalds A-A) in 8 years at Kentucky. Tubby recruited 7 “A” list players (McD A-A) in 10 years at UK. Again, about the same.

Ditto for Top 50 rated or Top 100 rated players – very similar numbers (per year) at UK.

Are you kidding me?

You actually wish Pitino was still here? Are you sure you aren’t ULTimmy hoping to get rid of your old coach? I take Tubby 100 times over and twice on Sunday. Pitino reached his pinnacle in ’96. He will never return to what he was then, or for that matter be relevant.

As far as Tubby letting players go, again, are you kidding me? Carruth sure did a lot when he was asked to leave. Hogan and I think it was Parker were kicked off for smoking weed. Good Riddance!!

Tubby would be good for anyone’s program. He’s going to get good players, built a structure others can depend on when he leaves and you don’t have to worry about a ‘lack of institutional control’ jumping up and biting you on the butt when he leaves.

If you look at Duke’s region this year I would say yes, they certainly do TRY and hand out championships. Kidding aside, I appreciate everything Pitino did for UK. He was a great coach at the time. I think a lot of his coaching ability had to do with recruiting and his press.

by ParisGuy on Mar 19, 2010 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Well gotta stick my 2 cents in here. Don't think my son or anyone else implied

RP’s taken a dumb-a pill……just that the game is not the same game it was 15 years ago. I’ve ALWAYS said RP would not have won a championship with the kids Tubby had. I mean Jeff Shephard and Padgett are your two best players?

RP’s a good coach but I think even he agrees that his time at UK was special in a lot of ways……his running pressing style was relatively unique. I mean look at a team with Feldaus and Pelphry beating a team with Shack and Chris Jackson. Living in Louisville and watching them……same coach, VASTLY different results and that’s the bottom line.

Tubby’s also a good coach…..let’s mostly all agree on that. He never played RP’s style and that bothered a lot of UK fans comparing the two styles. He was a “good” recruiter and for those who don’t remember, a couple of his classes fell apart due to the players personalities…..heck people were screaming for him to kick Gerald Fitch off the team and he wouldn’t. You could even make an argument that his recruits have been more successful in the NBA than RP’s…..Rondo & Prince have championships. Bottom line with Tubby IMO is that he got tired of the hotseat……simple as that

You can't fix "stupid"!

No problems with opinions

I have no problem with anyone having opinions. That is what makes this blog interesting.
The good coach, Rich Brooks, I believe had to ask someone when they thought he forgot how to coach.
Pitino was one game away from the Final Four last year. Tubby was a high ankle sprain away from the same when Bogans went down. Huggins who everyone thought was past his prime is a two seed I see. Pitino was an assistant under the current Syrcuse coach. I don’t think any of those has let the game pass them by.
There’s a lot of one or two season wonders out there. Louisville will be competitive as long as Pitino is there. And so will Duke with their coach, and Kansas, and North Carolina. Schools of that caliber don’t often hire someone unproven. I know Indiana did, but they fired one of the winningest coaches of all time. About any one was going to be a step down. Kentucky did the same. Wasn’t Billy G. an up and comer? How actually up and coming was he? Well, he beat Tricky Ricky right there in Rupp so he was going to be the savior of the blue grass. After a trip to the NIT it was decided maybe he ’didn’t fit’. Isn’t that what the athletic director said?

by UKlvrJM on Mar 19, 2010 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Dad, I need to borrow 2 more cents

I don’t think a pill was necessarily needed. UL is not UK by any stretch of the imagination when Basketball is concerned. Rick is and was a great recruiter and motivator. In game coach, not so much. Ask 10 UL fans and they will tell you the same thing. The difference is the talent pool at UK goes into the deep end. UL’s is barely hitting 5 feet. When I think a great coaches and I think of guys that can do both. Coach K, Izzo, Tubby, and Self to name a few. Knight and Crum were definitely there in their prime.

And as far as beating ‘Cuse twice this year, that and a movie stub will get you an early exit in the tourney. Cal didn’t have the game of their lives to beat UL tonight. And they certainly aren’t that much of a better team. I honestly think that UL might have been one of the only teams in the South that could have beaten Duke. The problem is that UL this year and in years past can get really fired up for one game ( ‘Cuse this year, the team before Mich St. last year) and then turn right around and lay an egg. Good coaches don’t let that happen often. Rick has let it happen too often at UL. Also I don’t think you will find too many good coaches who blame 18-22 year-old boys for losses as Pitino has done in the recent past. That is why IMHO Rick had better leave for the NBA, win a championship in the next few years (which won’t happen), or start packing his bags.

by UKlvrBM on Mar 20, 2010 1:33 AM EDT up reply actions

To clarify above....

Those 10 fans would tell you that Pitino couldn’t coach his way out of a paper sack. Not that UK is the far superior team/institution. They’d be thinking about that. Having nightmares about it. But you’d never actually get one to admit to it.

by UKlvrBM on Mar 20, 2010 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Like Every Coach, Pitino Is Better When He Has Great Talent

His two most talented UK teams were 1996 and 1997 = 69-7.

His other UK teams were good but = 150-43.

He is (or was) a superb motivator.

My dislike for Duke takes on many forms.

But I would have to say that I am not the only one that things Duke got a cake walk. There is no question that Duke was not the 1 or 2 seed. The selection committee for some reason had them at 3. Ok, no biggie. Tell me why then that as the third highest seed they are playing the weakest 2? Without question, the weakest two. Villanova is the third best team in the Big East. Then you have Purdue. Who I feel so bad for, but without their star player should not be a 4.

Paris, normally that better draw goes to your overall number one and trickles down. If you had taken a poll a week ago and asked 2000 people from across the country who would be in the Final Four, your responses would be somewhat varied. If you asked them Sunday at 10pm, you would have to be crazy or a Prophet not to have Duke there. The bottom line is that Duke is a good team, with a great coach. That good team and great coach don’t deserve to have their hand held while they walk to the Final Four. I’m not saying it is going to happen. There are plenty more games and upsets to be had. I just don’t think it is fair the way the cards were dealt.

Also, I am not really mad for UK. KU is the team that got screwed. I agree with, I think it was ABC, that thought that these teams were the perfect test runs for UK for the teams they should play if seeding leads to the finals.

Duke?
and all this time I thought they won one of the major basketball conferences in the country! I bet they wouldn’t have finished in the top four in the SEC.

I have be correctly accused of having a 'football fetish'. You know, someone who doesn't think football is the warm up sport to basketball season.

I never said the SEC was superior.

The SEC has been weak for a while. If the SEC wasn’t so poor this year, UK would have been the overall #1. No question. You are missing my point.

Well, I’ve always heard they don’t give the tournament to anyone.
Seems especially this year. That’s why you play the games.

Forty

the one issue I have with your thoughts is…..you think that Tubby was treated well while here. I really don’t understand why you think that. For the most part he was treated well by the majority of the fanbase. BUT, he faced more critics then he should have especially after the 05 season. He had us relevant for most of his tenure but the fanbase never seem to appreciate him. I am just really shocked that you said that.

Not What I Said

A minority of UK fans didn’t treat him so well. They wanted him gone in 1999.

A majority of UK fans did treat him well. Tubby has stated that many times.

A relatively small but vocal minority disliked Tubby for reasons other than basketball.

very true

but the ones who treated him badly REALLY treated him badly!!! Vicious. I think he is too nice of a guy to say that. I do think that the BCG era made all of us appreciate him more.

The loss to UAB when 1 seed was damning..

It left a bad taste in many’s mouths..

Not all of us...

It is not worth an intelligent man’s time to be in the majority. By definition, there are already enough people to do that.
