Tonight, the Kentucky Wildcats tip off their first NCAA Tournament as a high seed in four years versus the East Tennessee St. Buccaneers.
ETSU is a tough, gritty team in the mold of the Murray St. Racers (although not as talented), so lest anyone think Kentucky can go to sleep on this team, consider the fate of the Vanderbilt Commodores.

I am not truly concerned about a repeat of today's Vandy debacle, but I hope the team takes this ETSU team as seriously as though they were the Kansas Jayhawks. You cannot give an inch in a one-and-done tournament, because that little upset that doesn't mean all that much in December ends your season from here on out.
I'm treating this just like a regular game, because that's what it is. The biggest difference is that the team can't treat this like any other game, and if they take their foot off the gas in this one, it could spell doom.
What UK needs to do to win:
- Attack the rim on every possession;
- Get DeMarcus Cousins, Patrick Patterson and/or Daniel Orton a touch on every single possession;
- Make open shots, be they for two or for three;
- Make free throws.
What UK can do to lose:
- Get their big people in foul trouble;
- Give ETSU open shots. If ETSU ever gets the smell of our blood, this game could get difficult in a hurry.
- Fail to respect this opponent. They have been here twice as many times as anyone in our starting five.
- Turn the ball over. Kentucky must take care of the ball and avoid empty possessions. Get up a shot on every possession, and UK should win going away.
We need to play hard, get shots on the glass where Cousins, Patterson & Co. can rebound them, and attack this team on defense. Mercy is for the weak, and if UK shows any weakness, this little team will try to send us home. Kentucky needs to get their foot on the neck of this team and strike the game-ending blow as early as possible.

afternoon telling Terry Minors that “one year ago exactly I was getting ready to do the pregame with (he who shall not be named) for the first NIT game”.

Murray is a good team.
Very balanced, don’t really have any glaring weaknesses. They play Butler next. I could see them winning that one, too.
