NCAA Selection Sunday Open Thread
At long last, Kentucky Wildcats fans get to watch an NCAA selection show with absolutely zero trepidation. I had almost forgotten what it felt like not to worry about where UK was going to be picked. I have none for this season.
Many will sweat the bracket, but frankly, I can't find myself doing that after today. No matter what happens from here on out, this year has been a success in my book after suffering through the last four years of having about as much relevance to the NCAA basketball championship as a random hockey puck.
For Kentucky, they will unquestionably be selected a #1 seed, but they will not be the #1 seed -- that honor deservedly belongs to the Kansas Jayhawks, whom we have no shot at meeting until the Final Four, if both teams happen to make it.
I think there are still a lot of questions about who the #2 seeds will be, but I can't come up with a scenario, based on my review of the teams, that has anybody but the Kansas Jayhawks, Kentucky Wildcats and Duke Blue Devils in it. I think there is still doubt about that last number one between the Syracuse Orange and West Virginia Mountaineers. I really think West Virginia may have done enough to steal the fourth one seed from the Orange.
I'm pretty lousy at bracketology, so I won't even attempt to predict things -- instead, I'll leave that to the experts. All I know is that if UK isn't a #1 seed, there will need to be a Congressional investigation.
So chat about it, enjoy, and we'll be back with more later.

Now this ...

THIS is how I wanted to vote in your defining success poll Tru. It wasn’t an option though. At least it is in pixels now. I couldn’t agree more.

Duke ...

A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
NCAA gave Duke another twinkie
I hate the committee, I hate Duke, I’m quite emotional right now…Where is the GD logic in giving Duke the Twinkie south instead of us??? WE ARE FROM THE SOUTHeastern conference!!!! I’m so sick of Duke and its stranglehold on the good guy image of the NCAA!!! We have had tickets since August to the South regional finals. Now I’m going to root against Duke instead of rooting for my Cats. Go Big Blue.

Not to me.
Syracuse has a major injury, and a loss in the BET. Duke won their conf. tourney.

the injury seems like an unfair reason to drop them to me

That seems really low to me. I suppose we can’t expect more than 3 from the SEC, if that’s all the respect UT gets from the committee.

I think they were hurt by playing in the SEC west
No Doubt-
Miss State deserved to go. I truly can not understand how Florida was picked, and they were’t.

That opening loss to Rider and the late loss to Auburn

No SEC respect this year.
A Sea of Blue -- Kentucky Sports for the Discerning Fan
They did show a little respect for SEC East, though

WOW-What an amazing day!
Just got back from Nashville, and after watching our Cats win the SEC tourney, I was shocked Miss. State is not in the Big Dance. There were 20,000 people in Bridgestone Arena and 19,000 of them were in blue. It was probably the most hard-fought Cat victory I have ever witnessed. Miss. State played us tough all game, and they really deserved a chance in the NCAA. Our guys were unbelieveable, and that three at the end by John Wall was sic. He was leaning left and just heaved it up there and it dropped. Amazing that we tied it up in regulation. I feel bad for State, because they deserved it way more than Florida.

Great game. Glad ASoB had representation there.

Mid-court, eleven rows up, about 6 rows behind Ashley Judd. She was leading cheers at the end. Rex Chapman and Kenny Walker, and Pat Riley were seen also…
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
My union President took me yesterday-
He’s a UT fan, and when we beat them he gave me his ticket for today and told me to take my wife. My wife teaches Sunday school, so I invited my youngest daughter, who recently graduated from Middle TN State Univ. She loved it. She hadn’t seen UK win in two tries at Vandy. Once last year, and back when Tayshon played. When I dropped her off in Murfreesboro after the game she hugged me and said she’d never forget this day! How awesome!
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
No net cutting-
But, it was PPat’s birthday and the whole place sang for him. And PPat, Bledsoe, Cuz and J. Wall were all tournament. John Wall was MVP. Coach Cal took the microphone and thanked us for being such great fans and said he understood the sacrifices UK fans make to follow the Big Blue.He said he hoped we enjoyed their effort. PPat and Big Cuz danced and the whole team seemed to have a great time. All of downtown Nashville was truly A Sea of Blue!

Beat Arkansas at Arkansas by 9, lost by 13 at Louisville, lost by 8 at Tennessee, and lost by 2 at Morehead
Surprising # of common opponents here
Yeah, and they played them pretty well, huh?

Great comment in that thread.

don't stone me
but as long as he keeps Kentucky’s name out of his mouth, I think he makes some sense. Crabby sense, grumpy negative grandpa sense, but sense

From Pat Forde....lol
And there is a Van Gogh in the field as well, in Kentucky’s DeMarcus Cousins (5) — a brilliant talent, but also volatile enough to take someone’s ear off (though probably not his own).

Yeah, well, as my Mama used to say,

Had to go to dinner with the family, and missed the drama, but just got back and
heard Jay Bilas say that UK got a bad schedule for a young team.
Some odd choices in the seeding
Once again there are a huge number of non-BCS vs non-BCS first round matchups which drives me crazy because I like to pick the non-BCS teams to upset the BCS teams a lot.
UK got hosed getting Texas as a second round opponent. If they’re an 8 seed they should be in the Duke or Syracuse region.
At first the West Virginia seed pissed me off because again – based on the S-curve and how teams are seeded they should be in the Duke region and Villanova should be the #2 in UK’s region. But Nova is a more difficult matchup for Kentucky for many of the same reasons Miss St was, only they are better. So I think UK is actually better off with West Virginia.
As a Clemson fan I was hoping for a 7 seed to keep them out of a second round game against UK, but that game against Missouri could be really entertaining to watch if you’re not a fan of either team. Both of them have a chance to beat WVU in the second round. I wish Clemson was in a different region though.
3 > 2, except for very large values of 2.
I agree that we match up with West Virginia as well as 'Nova ...
but there is no way WVU was lower than "Nova in the committee’s eyes after the Mountaineers won their conference tourney. I just don’t get their line of reasoning when no one has Villanova better than WVU!
I do think if we get past Texas .. and they will be tough with a lot of their fans so close to New Orleans, but I think our big guys can eat up West Virginia’s or Villanova’s.
I'm not afraid of WV
We beat them last year with a much weaker team, and a high school coach… ;)
Steelers fan 1st! UK is my 2nd love.
I've thought a LOT about that tourney in Las Vegas? last year
We beat WVU and Kansas State and didn’t really get much out of Patterson in either game. Wierd
How did Duke get Villanova as #2 in their region instead of KU or UK?
The brackets look like they had Duke ahead of KU and UK?
that makes no sense
Just like Duke over Syracuse in the order of #1 seeds.
3 > 2, except for very large values of 2.
First Thoughts
Second round might be most difficult matchup. East not as tough as Midwest. MSU over UF, hoped NIT for Gators to help in landing Knight.

My thoughts too-
I was glad when Miss. State bounced them from the SEC tourney
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
Seriously, Gottlieb holds a major Sutton grudge against UK! How can ESPN let him ...
discredit our win today. He says a no-call on the missed free throw cost MSU the game and a tourney bid. Then goes on to say James Anderson is the player that could take over the tourney! He looks through OK State/Sutton glasses on everything he sees!
As soon as I walked in the door-
From the SEC tournament, Doug Gottlieb was spewing some crap about a John Wall lane violation, that cost Miss. State the game. What a jerk.
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
Thank goodness Steve Lavin-
Pretty much put him in his place…
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
Yea he's cool-
I’m surprised he’s not coaching somewhere…He’s a good analyst though…
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
I hope he never leaves to coach again
Why would he want to? Seems like being a college basketball analyst would have to be the funnest gig ever, if you loved the game. Travel around the country, watch games for free from the best seat in the house and give your opinion about basketball a lot? Yes please

I thought he did all right-
But he left quickly, kind of suspicious like…
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
UK has the toughest 2nd round matchup of the 1 seeds
And seriously, the NCAA doesn’t even try to hide their pro Dook bias anymore
Some say a comet will fall from the sky. Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves.
Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still. Followed by millions of dumbfounded dips**ts.
I think Texas could be a problem for us.
You just don’t know what you’re going to get from them…
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
It was earlier in the season but ...
Cornell had Kansas on the ropes …. they could be a sleeper team
I haven't seen them, but have heard they are tough...
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
The one thing you know you're going to get from UK
is a team with a desire to win/hatred of losing that I think is unmatched. That just might be enough combined with our talent to push us past the Texases and West Virginias of our bracket.
No doubt. And Texas will be playing in the next state over. Their fans travel pretty well, and you know they want
to show up to see us play! This is just wrong, almost like the 2003 move that put us playing Marquette in their backyard.
Still, I think we can beat Texas with the way they have been playing vs. the way we’ve been playing.
for heaven's sake
don’t compare this to the 03 Marquette loss!!!! You’ll give me a coronary : )

Sorry blue kentucky ..
hopefully it won’t end the same way, but I don’t get when the committee gives a regional advantage to a team that is supposed to be far inferior in their rankings. Especially with the way they have the different hubs to play in, I don’t get why they can’t keep that from happening.
I'm not sure-
But I have to work this Sunday when we might be playing Texas… Ugh!
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
I have to work on Saturday
I might cry. I was so hoping we’d have a Fri/Sun draw.

ESPN has their games on their correct days, without times of course

My predictions (again)
No big east team in FF. Also, I expect only 1 or 2 #1 seed to make it to FF (Kentucky being one of them).
I think Kansas has the toughest region of all! How does the committee not see
the region is loaded with Georgetown, Ohio State, Michigan State, Maryland . Digger just said if Kansas makes it through the region, they should win the title because it’s such a tough region. Or maybe, it is such a tough road that they don’t have much left in the Final Four ???
They had to put the tough teams somewhere-
In order to make it easier on Duke!
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
No joke! How does the weakest #1 seed in recent memory end up with a cakewalk to the Final Four?
That being said, I still think Duke will get exposed somewhere before the Final Four. And if they don’t and we survive a real region to face them in the Final Four, that would be sweet! I say we mop up the Lucas Oil floor with them!
Well-
Since North Carolina wasn’t around for the easy road, they gave it to Duke…
"You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't"
A lot of team in their region could take them down
Nova, Aggies, Baylor……the list goes on. When we make it to the final four, it won’t be against dUKe.
Cake walk?
I dont think Duke can beat either UL or Vill. If they are the weekest #1 seed in recent memory then this won’t be a cakewalk for them.

What a day!
In addition to a heart attack game, I get the #1 seed in the East in my pool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Big Blue
Good God stop whining!
If UK cannot beat either Texas or Wake in round two then UK was WAAAAY overrated to begin with. UK’s bracket is fair. Yeah maybe UK has the toughest #2 but if they cannot beat WVU then UK doesnt deserve the Final 4.
Face it, Texas sucks… I would much rather play them than face UL again. Duke may bow out to UL in the second round. Duke is still soft and UL can play very physical, I think this is a VERY tough matchup for Duke IF UL beats CAL.

Actually, playing a tougher team in the second round might be better for this team ..
We seem to play to the level of competition at times.
I made my first trip there a little over a year ago
it rained every day, one afternoon was fair…..lol
Blue... there is no other color to Bleed !!!
As I wrote before...all the rain brings with it the most sunny but green summers
that last through September. Summer in the Great Northwest will knock your eyes out and makes life so much fun. I teach, so I get the summers off to play
in Oregon’s wonderful outdoors. I live in the valley. Oregon Coast 1 hour away & Oregon forests and Cascade Mountains 1 hour away.
God’s Country:)
Maybe .......
I need to find a summer workshop to attend up there. Sounds nice.
Just called employees back
after regular winter layoff. Hmmmm…. let them run it and skiddoo for a few days.
What’s the best way to get tickets? I assume the games will be in the SuperDome.
checked stub hub
they’ve got tickets to all three sessions starting at around $225

I know!!
Oh geez I want to go. I’ve had some good times in New Orleans, it’s one of my favorite cities, not a bad drive and some of the best food anywhere………oh sweet, temptation!!

Yep
I’ve spent a lot of time in the Big Easy. Some of the best food? Nope, THE best food. If I lived there I’d die fat and happy of a heart attack.
That made me think about my daughter saying
she posted on her facebook that games like today would be the death of her, but she would at least die happy.

Blue... there is no other color to Bleed !!!
What Does it Mean
To be the number 1 or number 2 overall #1 Seed? Really. Duke clearly got the easiest draw and Syracuse next. There really is only 2 types of #1 seed. The Duke seed and the seed for all others. I never have hated Duke like some others here. I have always respected their program. I just do not like the preferential treatment. Do not be upset with the teacher’s pet. Be upset with the teacher.
This year has already be so much fun. I love watching this team play. It is all up to them now. One game at a time. Survive and advance. GO CATS!!!

Can you believe that ??
I need to hear it again, I think. ’-)
Blue... there is no other color to Bleed !!!
my mouth is literally hanging open right now reading that
I can’t believe that. That’s the first I’ve heard of any talking head picking UK. Damn I missed it. My husband was getting tired of my March Madness-themed television domination all day long, so I let him turn it to spring training baseball. Sadness!

Audio tweet from Coach Cal

And that is it for me tonight, what a wonderful day.
Just got home from a weekend in Lexington!
Got to watch yesterdays beatdown of Tennessee and today’s nail-biter vs. Mississippi St at BW3s. What a great time….the place exploded when UK sent it into OT and then went on to win. Just after the game my wife and I picked up hot off the press 2010 SEC Championship t-shirts before we headed home to Ohio.
I can not begin to say what a great weekend this was. GO CATS!!!
Best Sunday of the year!
Better than the Super Bowl.
I’ve got my schedule ready. A lady who doesn’t care about basketball (not from ‘round here) is taking my shift Friday, so I can watch UofL either build a big lead against Cal and lose at the end, or trail Cal at the half and come back and beat them. After this season, I’m ready for anything! Just glad to be dancing, really. The Freedom Hall finale was my favorite non-tourney game of all time, so at least I have that as a memory this year.
If I’m a number one seed, maybe I don’t want to play Texas so soon, but at most they’re a six seed based on their body of work. I honestly don’t think you guys will have much of a problem with Texas.
Good luck. Let’s meet in the final four. If not on the floor, then for beers.
