With a Bulldog win today, SEC has 5

I believe it was Gary Parrish who said recently that the Mountain West would have 4 teams in the tourney, which would be more than (among others) the SEC.  Really?  Florida is going to be in.  The bubble would have to shrink drastically for that not to happen, and there isn't a lot of bubble left to shrink that far.

Let's do the math, shall we?  the SEC has three locks: UK, Vandy, and Tennessee.  Florida, in my opinion (as well as a few pundits' opinions), is in as well.  That makes 4.  Mississippi State, with a win over Vandy today, would certainly play their way in.

Let the rebuttals begin!

I don’t really see how Florida is a lock. Nor do I see MSU as a definite after beating Vandy. I’d like to say it’s so but I don’t think we’ll get 5 teams. Probably 4 but probably not 5.

Read carefully

I never said Florida was a lock. I said that I and several pundits feel that they’re in, but never did I say they were a lock. I said UK, Vandy, and Tennessee are locks. :)

I read it that way because in the first paragraph you said it as a definite. “Florida is going to be in.”

:)

that sounds like a "lock" to me : )

Well, I don’t think they’re a lock OR a definite, if these are in fact two different things. I’m not saying you’re wrong, SD, and the pundits do seem to be saying they’re in. It’s not that I don’t think they’ll get it, I guess, as much as that I don’t see how they deserve it.

Possibly

But I think both. Hell, just conference pride talking here.

That’s about how I feel.

As much as I’d love to see the SEC make 5 teams, I expect it to be one or the other, but not both. Especially with Minnesota beating Purdue and likely getting themselves in tonight.

I have to confess, I am not convinced about Florida.....and I hope that Miss St. doesnt need to beat us to get in...

but if they did, I am not so sure they dont take Florida’s slot

Going to be tough for both

I just don’t see it. With Houston and Washington getting automatics today that shrinks the bubble a bit. Illinois and Minnesota have both strengthened their cases and Minnesota has a really, really good chance at beating Ohio St tomorrow and taking the automatic bid from the Big 10. They need Utah St to beat New Mexico St tonight in the WAC championship because Utah St is in regardless.

I’m still not sure that Mississippi St is safe even with the win over Vandy. They still have very few good wins and quite a few bad losses. Of course, the bubble seems particularly soft this year with most of the teams doing face plants when given the opportunity to help themselves so maybe they’ll get in.

What helps is that most of the teams ahead of them in the lists I’ve seen have all lost already and many of them lost to really bad teams. MSU’s last loss, should it occur, would obviously be to a really, really good UK team and if they are competitive in the game (along the lines of what Alabama did) then it’s possible even a loss might help push them up a bit.

A lot will depend on what the committee ends up emphasizing this year when looking at those last 4-6 spots.

3 > 2, except for very large values of 2.

MSU In, Gators Out

MSU deserves NCAA bid over Gators.

I think that's true, if it comes down to that.

But, the NCAA selection committee is “off the hook”, so to speak with letting them both in, and for the following reason. The field of bubble teams this year is very weak. Florida has a 20+ win season, which isn’t really good enough to get in. But — do they dis Billy Donovan for another year when they might just as easily not? Billy coaches a major program, and they might just want to throw Florida a bone.

If they do both get in, that’ll be the reason.
